Living in Hamburg: Tips on the Best Spots from a Local

hosco toured Hamburg with Carolin Marks, Bar Manager at the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski, and discovered there’s lots to love about Germany’s second largest city.
Carolin Marks, a graduate of IUBH in Bonn, moved to Hamburg from Berlin to work at the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski, and since settling in, she has no plans of leaving. Carolin says that the only downside of the port city is the unpredictable weather-but, when the weather is nice, there’s lots to take advantage of. Lakes, parks, the old town, as well as a modern and thriving business area mean that the city offers something to almost everyone. Listen in as Carolin shares her tips for shopping, eating, partying, and enjoying a day off in Hamburg.

People in Hamburg seem cold??? I moved to Hamburg 3 years ago and never have I once met anyone "cold" ...people here are very friendly and open minded. I also think the host should of been a real born and bread Hamburger not someone who moved to Hamburg. Also why on earth pay 500 euros for a WG (shared apartment) when you can get a whole nice apartment in Hamburg for 600 Euros. The filming of the video looks nice, but it really doesn't do Hamburg justice. This is a beautiful and charming city which has way much more to offer. This is sort of a perspective from a person who lacks interest in culture, history or art and it might be more suitable for someone who prefers nightlife or more of a younger crowd. I just feel there is so much more to see here than what you are presenting. Terribly disappointed for someone who actually lives in Hamburg :-(. Secondly why on earth would you want to rent a car in Hamburg?? Doesn't make sense whatsoever, I mean have you seen the traffic situation in inner city??...Hamburg has really well connected public transportation so there is really no need to rent a car. Sorry I am actually really cringing watching this video. Why only Altona and Eimsbuttel?? I have no idea. Hamburg Nord and Wandsbek is also nice in terms of finding an apartment. For anyone who wants to visit Hamburg here are some suggestions for attractions: 1.Miniatur Wunderland 2.Chocoversum 3.Mahnmal St. Nikolai ( there is a museum underground) 4.Elbe Tunnel 5.Fischmarkt 6.St Michael's Church 7.A boat tour on the Elbe (but if you purchase a normal day ticket from HVV you can also take the ferry on the Elbe which will save money and you can also see Hamburg from the Water) 8.Highly recommend!!: If you are interested in a walking tour of Hamburg by local Hamburger's and it is free ( contributions is really up to you) here is the link for anyone who is interested (also the tour is given in multiple languages) : - www.robinandthetourguides.de/en/ 9. Holsten Brewery: if you like beer.Ratsherrn Brewery and Altes Mädchen is also a good option if you want to try some local Craft beer (Ratsherrn) they also have a restaurant ( Links are below): - www.holsten-brauwelt.de/12/home.html - ratsherrn.de/en/ - en.altes-maedchen.com/altes-maedchen/ 10. If you are in Hamburg there are also a lot of options for Musicals, Theatre and concerts. Notes: When visiting Hamburg I recommend bringing a small foldable umbrella and wind proof jacket along as it rains a lot here. The weather can be quite unpredictable and windy. 11. When in Hamburg why not visit a local Market I have attached a link of the coolest markets in Hamburg below: -theculturetrip.com/europe/germany/articles/10-coolest-markets-in-hamburg-germany/ There is still a lot to see in Hamburg and I hope this might be helpful for anyone who is interested in visiting Hamburg. Also for tourists most people in Hamburg can speak fluent english and from my personal experience people here are very patient and will try their best to try to understand and communicate with you :-) so don't be afraid to ask for help or ask questions from locals in Hamburg.

I was in Karlsruhe in '87 and wish I had visited Hamburg. Baden Baden is pretty awsome. I miss when the mark rate was 3 to 1. I could get a dinner for 5 bucks. I was support for a bridging company(Army) and would cross the Rhine and step into France. I miss those days terribly the Germans are such beautiful people.

well that was still a lot of standard tourist stuff. She doesn't seem to venture too far out of her usual boundaries. Also the districts to life she mentioned are exclusively for very extrovert and outgoing people that don't have problems with constantly disturbed nighttime peace. Otherwise it can get annoying very fast. Trust me, I've lived in Hamburg-Neustadt for almost 11 years.

What the heck, flats are "not too expensive"? You only have to get your papers ready? Begging your pardon, but on which planet does Carolin live? Rents have exploded in recent years, lots of indigenous people cannot afford a living where they have grown up anymore, even well-payed employees have difficulties to find an accommodation. Hamburg is a pretty nice place, but does every report have to be 100% feel-good and throw dust in people's eyes? This report (only one of many dealing with this issue) is from 2010, and things have not become better since then: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pZl6qLR_ec--eNY.html

I know this comment thread is old but I’ll give my two cents anyway. I live in London, for the cost of a nice flat in Hamburg you will be lucky to get a rat infested hole in the ground in London. Even in towns within communing distance of London accommodation is far more expensive than the cost of a flat in Hamburg! And salaries in Hamburg are not much less than in London. Everything is relative.

We Japanese love Germany and Germans very much.Germany and Germans are the best in the world. God bless Germany and Germans.Japan's national anthem Kimigayo was made by Hayashi Hiromori and German Franz Eckert. We Japanese sent 9,000 cherry blossom trees to Germany in 1990. It is said that the money of this cherry blossom trees is gathered by the donation of the Japanese and bought a cherry blossom trees . Almost all Japanese people participated in donations. The Japanese always cooperate with Germany. This cherry blossom tree is still in Berlin. All surplus money was donated to Germany. We Japanese love Germany and Germans very much. Japan imports many German products to support Germany.God bless Germany and Germans. Japan made the constitution, medicine, the army in by reference to Germany during the Meiji era. Japan succeeded in modernizing thanks to Germany. Japan learned a lot from Germany. There are two Germans statues at the University of Tokyo in Japan. There are many other German statues in Japan. Germany is a Japanese teacher.I always pray to God for the eternal happiness and peace of Germany. The most imported cars in Japan are German cars. Most of the cars that run in my town are German cars. This is a story that Japanese people helped Germans in japanese Okinawa Miyakojima, Japan. In 1873, the German Merchant shipRobertoson was hit by a typhoon. The ship was aground off Miyakojima Miyakokuni. At that time, the islander rescues the crew. There were many Germans, but all were successfully rescued. And the Japanese treated all Germans wounds. And the Japanese made the Germans eat delicious food. They gave Germans a place to sleep. The Japanese entertained the Germans with songs and dances. The islanders repaired the German ship. The days were 34 days. And the islanders put a lot of food and water on the ship and sent the Germans to Germany safely. There are still monuments sent from Germany in Okinawa.Japan will always help Germans from now on.There are other stories of Japanese helping Germans. There are so many that I cannot write. After the war, the German city was destroyed and many Germans were killed. We Japanese are very sad about that. I pray to God that Germany will never be unhappy again. There is a tower in my town praying for the Germans soul to be saved. It is a story in the Bando camp.About 100 years ago, there were many German prisoners of war in Japan.Japan did not treat German POWs awfully. The Japanese treated German POWs as friends. Japan respected German POW freedom.Japan did not force German POWs to work. Germans were respected in Japan. They spread German culture and history,German music and art, beer and sausages, Baumkuchen,German food culture, etc to Japan.Germans also spread European culture, art and music to Japan. The German bridge created by German prisoners of war is still well preserved in Japan.Japan did not want a war with Germany. At that time, Britain and Japan were allies. There was a request from the United Kingdom, and it became a battle with Germany. There are many exercise facilities in Bando Camp, and Germans enjoyed sports every day. There were restaurants and shops, and Germans could use it freely. Japan allowed German POWs to do sports and cultural activities. The Japanese donated a lot of money for the German POWs. We donated a lot of donated items, daily necessities and sweets.Exchanges between villagers and Germans were also popular. It is more correct to say that the camp where the Germans were located is a German village than a camp.German POWs performed a concert a few days before parting. When the performance was over, the highest German thanked the Japanese. The Germans gave the Japanese a cane that he cherished. The German said, “To my beloved friend.”
