Nice video, Gio. Walkability is very important to me. That's why i liked BGC and IT Park. I'll look into Cebu Business park next visit. I stayed in Taguig near Venic3 Grand Canal mall and found the walk around McKinley hill to be a pleasant and easy 30 minute walk. Only problem was at night neither of the 2 routes were well lit. I also liked that neither BGC or IT park seemed nearly as crowded and chaotic as the surrounding cities of Manila and Cebu.

I always thought BGC required $3K a month to survive, and I guess that would be a fair budget, but never realized you could get by on less than $2K a month. It's a good point about hard to date in that area though, and if your single and looking that could be a deal breaker.

@@wanderingdoc5075I don't live in Cebu. I'm in BGC Manila. Gio can probably give you a better idea about Cebu. As for BGC ask the power lines are underground, so there's never a brown out. Most condos have fiber optics and fast reliable internet here in BGC. You will pay more for almost everything. Rent starts at 25k for small studio condos. You're going to pay around 1,000 pesos per sqm here. But you can find some decent places that are larger. My condo is 50sqm and I'm paying 35k a month or around $600.

I enjoyed BGC for several weeks in 2018, 2019 &2020 in Airbnb s at both ends of High Street. Liked early mornings walk to St Luke’s hospital for excellent quality low cost food in their cafeteria. Occasionally great piano music from the free to play piano on the second floor mezzanine. Shopped after breakfast at the adjacent S & R market store. Nearby is the Golf Coarse and largest cemetery of 36,000 WW II veterans. That cemetery has interesting murals similar to the Punch Bowl cemetery on Oahu, Hawaii. Now I’m enjoying Medellin, Colombia that has a more modern infrastructure and the best medical facilities. Cost of Living about 15% higher than the Philippines. Hamburgers better than the very good “Cliff House” above Valencia. Medellin (MDE) temperatures 60 to 85 all 12 months. I’m age 80 fit do daily swimming and date two MDE svelte fit girlfriends ages 40 & 33.

One needn't concern about deposits, electricity, Internet, cleaning, and bed sheet washing. $10/night - possible, but a dive $15/night - decent $20/night - lower end of high class

Bacolod is a mixed bag, to me. There are some charming places and a couple nice malls, etc., but the traffic sucks here. If there’s a decent beach without loads of trash, I haven’t found it yet. But the future looks good overall for the city (if they figure out the traffic). I’m here with my wife, who already owned the home, so I can’t compare to anywhere else. I’m also not going to the clubs, so I’m not sure how good or bad it is for single guys. Another great interview, Gio.

I have to wonder now if places like BCG is really designed for older expats. It’s a young town with clubs and hot spots. So I used to say that Manila was not designed for your 2k a month earning expats. But now i think is not really designed for older folks like me. Good mentioned of the positives. But some minor bad things are guards at condos knowing your business, bad transportation options there and the aforementioned designation for young people

Yes BGC is a younger professional community, but you will find a good number of retired expats here as well. As far a clubs, there are a few, but nothing like in Makati. There are a lot of other choices for places to gather that cater to an older crowd. High Street is very family oriented with many restaurants and shopping. Forbestown also has nice restaurants and bars. Uptown is a bit more on the upscale and is where you will find more of the clubs. Hope you'll come check it out. Look me up and I'll introduce you to some older expats who live here.

  • @greeneryfinancial

Yes it's not really *for* retirees or older folks, but they can live there quite fine like the guy in the video - he fits in I reckon. I'd argue it's really for business folks and finance folks, not really young folks in particular. To me having a security guard that somewhat knows your business is a GOOD thing, if you treat them well they become great, they'll of course secure your belongings but they'll warn you if anything goes wrong, if anyone is asking about you, and generally make your life easy in the case of deliveries or people coming over. I do agree the transit isn't ideal, but the new metro line will fix that to some degree - but transport everywhere in Manila is a mess.

I’ve stayed in BGC several separate weeks when traveling in the Philippines from Valencia, Negros Oriental to Baguio, Benguet. Enjoyed Airbnb in South of Market near SM Aura. Walked by the large American Cemetery, dinned in the excellent cafeteria on second floor of St Luke’s hospital and next shopped at adjacent S & R. Also, visited the oldest museum , at the University of St. Thomas (UST). Several good friends are UST graduates. In Dumaguete vicinity, I enjoyed the Marpas Apartments for swimming and their excellent Sari Sari store. And, the cool morning breezes along the ridge road up to the Japanese Memorial monument above Valencia. Some advice Gio, stop placing the mic so close to your mouth. The same distance as your guest works fine. The sudden up tick in sound is very uncofotyable for anyone wearing headphones.

You can get a steak for 1,500, but if you go to Wolfgangs, which I don't, you're paying 5 or 6k easily. If I said 15k, I misspoke. The beauty of BGC is you can find high end dinner if that's what you want, but also good restaurants at a discount. I can eat at Dennys for 300 pesos, Wild West Roadhouse has great food for under 400 pesos. You just have to look around and find the deals.

I can get a bucket of 5 beers and appetizer for 399pesos at two different places on Forbestown road. Most places have beers for around 100 to 115. You just have to look.
