Living Full Time in a Land Rover Series 3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

linktr.ee/kasperhoglund
Long time no see! I took a few weeks off to drive back south and pick up this new rig. Like I mention in the video, there's a lot of plans for the build. But as for now I'm just making it usable whilst I prepare the Discovery 4 for sale.
I'm fully aware that the LR4 is the greatest for my kind of traveling, but the fact is I want to change the way I travel. I would rather have less money going out, and longer period on the road.
And I'm going to swallow these words later, but I would rather have more time and money for hitting the road. And deal with whatever inconvenience this old landy might throw at me. I'm here for the adventure anyway! Not for the comfort of the "perfect" setup.

As an 85 Defender (technically Land Rover 90) owner who daily’s it. Make sure the basics are covered: cooling, brakes, ball joints, wheel bearings, UJs/props, and suspension..those will get you 90% of likely repairs. Also recommend waxoyling before the winter. I also recommend buying a battery jump starter if you don’t already. Fun trucking! Slow and steady will still make it to the finish line :)

Cheers! Im planning on doing a sheepfat coating (seeps into the rust) some time soon. And even though the brakes are good, I’m planning a full overhaul because safety. All the other bits is also getting some love soon! It has 75000 km on the clock, but living trough a war and ten years in Norway does not help the poor thing 😂 but it’s been stored inside most of its life in Norway at least!

@@kasperhoglundI've driven a lot of them in the military, and also delivered them across UK. I absolutely hate them! 😂 Ultra noisy, draughty, extremely slow and shakes you to bits on a smooth 🛣️ road. Long journeys are very unpleasant. The engine is unreliable. The useless windscreen wiper, the clunky gearbox, the lack of decent aircon, no decent radio or satnav, the terrible suspension and overall tractor 🚜 like experience when driving one. They remind me of rattling along the road in a tin can. Even off-road I much prefer diving and living fulltime in a decent SUV. But that of course is just my personal opinion. I know the old military tin can on wheels offers cheap initial buying price...but I find that they end up costing far more in maintenance and conversion costs than running more modern 4WD from the 1999-2006 era, which can also be bought for around £2,000-£5,000 depending on model and year.

Nice vehicle! After a decade of 109" Series 3 ownership and about 80,000 miles on the road, may I suggest considering carefully the quality of available parts whilst improving and maintaining your vehicle. It's well worth spending out for genuine, new old stock parts in many cases, especially where reliability is important. Not the easiest of vehicles to own and maintain but well worth it.

I own a 1990 N/A Diesel Defender truck. These vehicles are gems from the past. One advice: You could have a sliding window at the back of the truck to the right. You would have better visibility while going backwards on reverse gear. It helps in crowded areas.

Beautiful car Kasper! The Series (1-3) Land Rovers have a lot of style and beauty that (sadly) seems to have been lost in the newer models. It's amazing that you could buy it at such a good price, nevermind the work it takes to get it "finished", the journey looks promising! Can't wait to see more of your build and adventures. Also, I am actually very interested in how you will make it "winter proof" (insulation, heater, starter...), lots of things to think about! Cheers!

Any man that's going to take an old rover and fix it up, gets my subscription. I actually got stuck behind a new Defender the other day, wtf were they thinking? I've noticed them sliding over about the last 10 years with the platform in general. Luxury over utility. I'll take utility any day. I've always admired Land rovers and in particular the defender after driving several while I was stationed in Europe in the military. Just never had the time to buy one and keep it running and restore it. Though much like you said a functional restoration, not restoring it back to brand new.

About 10 years ago i bought an ex-army 1970 Series 2 and converted it into a camper. Its still going strong (OK rebuilt engine, brakes, gearbox diffs...). Its great fun to drive (at 45mph) very reliable (so long as its serviced weekly) and sleeps myself and my son in almost no comfort. We love it and go away at every opportunity. Its amazing what you can fit in, we have a diesel heater, sink, toilet and stove plus 2 bunks. A recent addition has been cargo racking on the sides to lash stuff on outside to free up some (any) floor space. Someone once looked at it and said "Its Tetris camping" : }. They are right, put one thing in the wrong way round and you either have to pull it all out again stand on one foot. My advice - take your time with your build, a lot of ideas don't work the way you imagine and keep it simple. Shop for ideas you can copy and make everything yourself, if it doesn't work cut it up and start again! If you really run out of space get the matching army trailer, they are equally tough but your speed on hills will be 20 mph!! (They are called Sankey Trailers). The Series is rated 3/4T cross country and the trailer another 3/4 ton cross country. We cut side lockers which makes a lot of extra space.

Still believe that if you do more cross border stuff (like I'm doing in the Balkans) with long daily drive, the Disco will get you there more comfortable, but the space you got will definitely make it more comfortable. I have a 1982 109 County. Good luck with the build, the mechanics and electrics are simple enough, a lot will depend on how much you want to change up. An overdrive and power steering are worthwhile driving improvements. If the power steering stops working, the steering will still work so it won't strand you, a bolt on ram system is as simple as it gets and will make a big difference if you're running bigger tyres.

The diesel heater will be a welcome addition! I'm in the market for a D4 myself for the 7 seats and some light camper/adventure duty and I saw yours turn up for sale. It's a bit out of my price range, and only 2 seats, but that car is going to make someone very happy. I'm glad the downpour of comments on your previous video which preposterously claimed the Discovery is your identity, didn't change your plans. This will be a very interesting build to follow and I'll be taking notes to apply to a simple camping build for my Chevy Suburban.

Yes, Your logic is sound. The idea is to own a car, not to be owned by it. And then there's that old saying, "Beware of luxury, It knocks on your door to enter as a guest, but has come to take a slave". I've just purchased an '06 LR3 with 134K miles. It needs much lovin' and LR put way too many hiding places for those infamous electrical gremlins. But after 4 months, we're getting to know each other and I'm starting to feel a bond.....Paid about the same as you did. But insurance is cheap and no loans. Fuel is pricey but when all is figured it still is a bargain by any measure. Just need to be willing to get your hands dirty on a regular basis...Love that bullet hole!

Hey Kasper! A 88" Series III was my first car when I was 20 y/o... a diesel one, and I say that, because if you say yours is 10 times worst than the Discovery 4, imagine a diesel... your is quieter and by the way sounds great!!!... some sound deadning first and then do the rest as a camper to keep yourself warm and comfy inside... and enjoy life!!

Kasper, brilliant! Long time watcher, first time commenter, and as a fellow ex-military 109 owner I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with this cool mint green truck. Your videos are a great inspiration and to see a series as the method of travel now gives me all kind of a buzz. One thing to watch is overdrives are inherently noisy, and need a bit of maintenance to remain quiet if you get one that is. Mine has the 2.5 N/A Diesel (now that is a tractor engine lol) which I'll be fitting Range Rover classic differentials to when I'm back home (as well as a turbo for a bit of extra push) from working abroad as well as a few other things, I'll drop you a message if you want to update on how it goes and pick your brains about a few things camera related if you don't mind. Enjoy and keep up the good work! Edit: Welcome to the slow lane my friend! :D

so it was a series 3! nice we actually have a 72' 109 diesel sitting in our yard waiting to be restored. hope to see this car more in the future! edit: aluminium oxide is actually really hard and does a pretty good job protecting the metal by itself. so if you get a scratch or something (wich you should because it gives charachter) you shouldnt have to worry as much as if you had iron panels. From google: Aluminum has a very high affinity to oxygen. When a new aluminum surface is exposed in the presence of air or any other oxidizing agent, it quickly develops a thin, hard film of aluminum oxide (or hydrated oxide in non-stagnant water). This aluminum oxidation is precisely what makes aluminum so corrosion-resistant

This is so cool. I think you’ve chosen the reliable and cost effective solution. My wife and I own a 1981 series 3 petrol 88”. It’s our only car and it’s never let us down. When you maintain the series Land Rover properly it’s so cheap to run. The parts are cheap and the work can be done with simple tool setup. Skål from Copenhagen, Denmark 🇩🇰 and “god vind” as we say here 🤙🏼 Look forward to following your journey ahead. It just got a tad more interesting! 🇬🇧
