Living By The Beach For $1,600/Month In Santa Monica, CA | Unlocked

In 2022, Sung Yoo moved from New York to Santa Monica, California - into a 140-square-foot tiny home. She currently pays $1,600 a month for rent. Take a look inside the minimalist space, which is smaller than the average size of a parking spot.
Unlocked is a home tour series focused on how much people across the globe spend on their housing, what they get for the money and what they had to sacrifice to make it happen.

She lives in my area. And that rent is a steal. Her place is either a stand-alone tiny house or simply an ADU. An ADU is an Accessory Dwelling Unit--a building (usually a garage or shed)--that got expedited permits to be transformed into a rentable space. It's a way the city government has motivated homeowners to build housing that could be used to ease the housing crunch. There are many of those being built. My next door neighbor just finished hers. And the neighbor two doors down just started a week ago. But one thing about her place: It's not protected by rent control.

I stayed at a hotel in Santa Monica for $500/night for something that was basically just average Marriott. Believe me Santa Monica is a dump. All the homeless people at the beach and the water is dirty. I would not even go near that beach because I’d be afraid to step on a syringe or feces or urine. It’s just not glamorous at all.

As someone that lives in a tiny house this is totally glamorized. Where are the extra bed sheets, and extra toilet paper and paper towels, socks and underwear, casual clothes, cleaning supplies etc. It’s almost as if this was staged and it doesn’t look lived in. But I guess that’s what people do online. My tiny house is nice but it is cluttered for sure.

Hi! My name is Tamara and i'm from Argentina and I find it a super interesting idea to reduce your life to a smaller space and having less possessions because it really requires you to THINK differently. Your way of life (which later we can ask how can be expanded to more people who may or may not want to live alone) is revolutionary in some way. It forces you to confront your needs, about what you actually use, there are no frivolous possessions. It is something that goes in a different direction from the consumerist programming of American life (and even more in a state like California) and on the other hand it seems to be something potentially great to help lower environmental impact in the coming years! I think that as a culture we are still far from understanding that "less is more" but I seriously believe that what you are doing in part shows it. It is paradoxical that the more we free ourselves from things we do not need the more space we give in our lives to be able to think, create and have space in our mind! It is as if having fewer distractions leaves more space in our head, more 'empty space' so that different things arise: like thinking that it is possible to live in a small space. I will be visiting California later this year! I will definitely continue to see how this community evolves! but I congratulate you and above all I share the love of what you are undertaking. Thank you!

I've been designing and building small spaces for a few years now and I have a few rules for tiny spaces that are absolutely required: No less than the space of a 40ft container, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with shower, small storage space, bedroom that is NO LESS THAN 10% of the overall space, an open area that is no less than 50% of the overall space, AC and heating. Anything less and it is more like a prison than home. Humans are not meant to live in confined extra small spaces for an extended amount of time. I always tell people that if they want to go small they should AT MINIMUM be ready to build a connected 40ft container space AT MINIMUM.

Could you point on how to find designs based on area and weather? I'm looking for BUILDING a tiny house in a small land in a country oversees! So I would probably need to have blueprints, design matching climate and location, know what material I need (hard to import for that country) and make it SAFE!. I'm not a construction person, but I know some regular friends who work in Normal construction in the US. How do I start something like that? I'm all for natural light, minimal design, wood/white/plants etc.. I would also like that it cost less than$50k (depending of course on material prices in that country which I have no idea) Also what's the gochas? Like your comment was really helpful bc it's a big gotcha to fall for the design then figure it's not really liveable. Thanks!

@@espressoarabic Hello. That's a lot of questions. You're pretty much asking for a project scope with designs included. Those things cost. Start with KZread videos but be aware that there's much more to building tiny than just a tiny structure itself. A big gotcha would be the roof on the container. It can be put on last and it doesn't have to be put on right away but you want to put a roof on ASAP for a few reasons, one mainly being to assist with climate control.

Good luck building a tiny house community in California. We so need it but I know when the county I live in northern California only allows ADU and has resisted communities. It doesn’t pay their pensions and perks. I lived in a 27 foot travel trailer for four years while building a house in 1989. It took us for years to build a house. We both worked full-time jobs and did 98% of the construction ourselves. It was a 2800 square-foot house so quite the undertaking. At this point in my life in my 60s, I long to go back to a simpler way of life that living tiny provides.
