Living below 100% poverty level in Florida. How I do it.

My current income is $834. a month. That adds up to 10560 a year. The Federal Poverty guideline for 1 person is 12880. a year. This is my budget
834-
450 rent
130 election
45 water &sewer
20 trailer registration, pullthru fees.
30 lawn
total left.
159
I do get food stamps and I still can go about 50 more needed a month for food around the holidays. Currently I am living without using my car so I can get primed to live without it. You can get unlimited bus for under 40 a month, half of that if you have proof of disability. There is not room for a lot of extras, but there is enough for a few necessities and wants.

So true! I have been decluttering and reducing since 2014! We had a huge Victorian a barn and an EL full! My late husband was an antique dealer. I have come far since then. But I still have some of his stock. It's mostly paper which I am slowly going through looking up and pricing. Its tedious.

A shame you couldn't got control of the anxiety. I had the same thing happen to me, kept losing jobs. I went to a therapist who got me on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It was life changing for me. I'm now 68 still working full-time at the same job for 18 years. I backslide into anxiety now and then but quickly use the tools I learned in CBT and get it under control before it escalates. You're right. I'm doing better with a home of my own. I was creamed in The Crash of 2008 -- lost my career, my health insurance, and my retirement investments at the age of 61. I had no choice but to take the minimum Social Security retirement payout as soon as I qualified. I live quite well because I took in a housemate to share household expenses, gave up meat, make my own laundry detergent, cleaning solutions, and personal care products (even underarm deodorant). I don't buy single use paper products (paper towels, facial tissues, even toilet paper), and I buy only designer label clothes and household items at a local upscale thrift store. I own a 17-year-old Volvo, which should last me the rest of my life, but seniors in my town ride the bus for free (my favorite price!), so I know I can always take the bus when gasoline is too expensive. I also carpool with a neighbor for in-town trips. I hang my laundry outdoors when weather permits, and I make my own bread, granola and yogurt. It all takes a sense of organization and meticulous attention to every last dime. Good luck to you.

The crash of 2008 was a godsend to me. I found a 1600 sq ft 3br/2ba condo in Phoenix for $10K. It needed some work but not all that much and needed appliances. I since only have an HOA fee of $145 a month for the past 11 years. My 401K dumped in 2008 like everyone else's but I didn't touch it and it bounced back and grew in a few years. I'm now 68 years old and still work full time. I'm planning on retiring this year and get a van for conversion for extended weekend trips. Slow and easy does it, keep moving ahead consistently.

The only thing I can cut back on is groceries so I have been trying to do grocerty challenges like $30.00 every 2 weeks. I can usually manage that if I just buy food for the week but when things run out like flour, toilet paper, olive oil, etc., it makes it hard to stick to a small budget. Its hard to afford meat now. At Walmart try to price match to the cheaper online price. Follow couponers that specialize in Walmart. They usually know what coupons are giving overage at Walmart. Recently Revlon lipsticks in 4 shades were giving .65-.75 overage for lipstick purchased with coupon. Even 3-4 coupons would give you $1.95 to $3. Doesn’t seem like a lot but careful shopping could pay for 8 dinners if you made a double recipe of Amy Dacyzyn’s Lentils & Brown Rice Casserole with carrots (can be made in slower cooker to conserve energy). Tasty, nutritious and very cheap to make at about $1.35 per casserole. Using Walmart and Ibotta, this week offers free Maxwell House Hazelnut Instant coffee. Using paper coupons + Ibotta at Walmart, Schick razors are free.

I have 2 kids no child support, there was no way I was going to continue to afford to live there. And your place is huge compare to what I had - I was living on 900 sqf (2beds & bath) apartment for a $1000. You living alone - get rid of the 2nd bed go to one bed or rent the space if you own the property. It seems like your kids are independent - that's a good thing - when I was evicted no one wanted a single mom of 2 kids for a roommate. I had no choice but to say bye to FL - I am now in NM & I am renting a house 3bed & 2baths & 2car garage $850 monthly (1500sqf). Bcz I have a boy & a girl in their teen yrs - I am able to put them in their own rooms...Thanks for sharing bcz we don't usually talk about our experiences in poverty & how we got there and above all what it takes to keep your head above the water...

I do not mean this in any critical way. I think your biggest issue and what is holding you back from accomplishing things in your home is depression. There are many low to no cost mental health options available. I also think living in clutter and disarray is contributing to your depression. You would feel much better mentally if you declutter and organize your home and make it a comfortable and enjoyable place to be. Little changes go a long way - a coat of paint, some Goodwill curtains, a few favorite things around, a plant or two. If you can’t tackle a whole room do one corner at a time. Seeing results will motivate you. Also to stick to your food budget cook everything from scratch and eliminate convenience and processed foods - more work but much cheaper, healthier and tastier. Make cook once/eat twice dishes like a small roast chicken, spaghetti, casserole, etc. Go meatless one or two days a week. Try to get out and at least take a short walk each day. Make time to socialize with others - that is so important to state of mind. I have had very little money at times in my life and struggle with depression myself so I speak from experience. I wish you all the best.

Thank you Connie...I love that name! I have back and arthritis issues and fibromyalgia. It is so hard some days to brush my hair let alone lift items and hang a curtain rod. But I try. I do take things in small steps. When I do too much ... my back goes into spasm and I need days off before I can start again. I am sure you are right, I do get depressed. But I am going through the mourning period of my husbamds death 7 months ago. I am sorry for your struggles! Be well and be blessed. One moment at a time.❤

I agree with everything you said, but this person isn’t capable of doing housework, which indicates to me that she needs to get a doctor to find an assisted living facility placement for her. Her income, or rather lack of it, qualifies her for Medicaid. This video got 46k views. That means with KZread sending her hundreds of dollars for these views she’ll eventually lose Medicaid. That’s a poor trade off.

You may be able to help with home improvement costs...check with your city or county and see if they have programs. I was able to get my house painted (exterior) and a new water heater with a $5,000 grant. I can get car insurance through the state for about $20 per month. And see if there is a food pantry nearby, if you still aren't driving..they may be able to arrange for someone to drop it off. I'm in California, so you'll need to check what's available to you. These are just some of the things that have helped me out a lot. I've been homeless (for a short time) and it's no fun at all. Good luck to you dear.

I felt every single word that you said! I've got health issues as well... I used to keep a spotless home, and my home is far from spotless now. It breaks my heart to have to tell my children that they can't have friends over. HOWEVER. I just spent 2 weeks in the hospital. Acute, SEVERE, pancreatitis. I was in critical condition because my blood work came back absolutely bottomed out. Everything was low or easy to high. My lipase was over 4000, while my potassium was 2. I'm home now with energy again! I'm DETERMINED to have this house an acceptable level of organized. It's clean, but we have so much stuff... Long story short: My FIL had a stroke and had to move into an assisted living home. My husband and I, with our 4 kids, were the only ones capable of moving to the acreage. So, we packed up our 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom, 2 story (with a large finished basement as well) and moved into a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, half finished basement. I even had a HUGE garage sale prior to moving and sold half of our furniture. (Our large home had a massive formal dining room AND a large breakfast nook just off the kitchen. ) Oh... I forgot to mention that the acreage house was untouched after Dad's stroke. Nothing was taken out aside from perishable food. Sooooo. Yeah. That was 6 years ago. 😳 I've even got a large, heated garage that I've NEVER been able to use for my truck. *lol* The only thing that makes organizing and decluttering difficult for us is that we live rural... So garage sales are EXTREMELY hit or miss. Even though we are LITERALLY less than a 2-minute drive from town.... We still maaaaybe get 8 to 12 people show up... And that's not per day!! That's over the course of FOUR DAYS! Any suggestions from anyone??!! HELP!!

It's become such a vicious cycle for me for the last two years. I get depressed because there is just so much junk to go through. Then, when I manage to declutter a part of my house, I have a garage sale. Barely manage to sell anything, then put what's left in the garage or one of MANY outbuildings! So, I start feeling better about my home than need something from an outbuilding for yard/pasture maintenance and when I'm confronted by all the shit in the building... I fall back into a depressive funk. It's mentally and emotionally fucking EXHAUSTING!

Have you tried your local facebook marketplace? Your town buy sell and trade on Facebook, if you have available items, Mercari, Poshmark. Ebay? Books can be sold on Amazon if you open a selling account. I only just saw this comment. I don't get notifications for them after the first release. I noticed though, that everyday people don't have money. It's mostly resale dealers that come by. How about consignment shops. Why not use that country property to start a small self service shop? Put up a canopy or use an empty building? Price your stuff and put it on tables. Make shift tables if need be. You may have a little country shop you can make spare money on. Let the community know you are there on Facebook, The Marketplace, Craigslist. Don't give up. If all else fails, donate. I gave so much to Amvets! Nothing would sell in the covid years. Stay blessed.🥰

Maybe if your kids could pull together to get one ever so often for each room, in time every room would all be neat and tidy. My house insurance went up and took it. No increase for me. Your fridge has to be twenty years younger than mine. I get a bit more ss than you, but my father left his house to me and it is sucking the life out of me. The taxes, the plumbing, the yard work that I have to pay someone to do for me, the dryer that died the first month after I move in, the garage door doesn't go up, and on and on. I'm diabetic and eating Keto so I don't take any meds. Keto is more expensive, but it saves me on meds and doctor bills, and testing supplies.

This may seem crazy but I always thought to myself that if I fell on hard times(which thankfully I have not yet) I would move to an area in Florida where I could fish for all of my protein needs. It is pretty easy to catch bait to catch delicious inshore species with minimal tackle. You could trade excess meat for other essentials. I realize this may be difficult if you have mobility issues.

I live in Philadelphia PA, rents are ridiculous here for seniors on a small pension. I'm downsizing. To have more space, you have to clean and declutter. Take one room at a time. Recycle papers, catalogs, donate, sell or give away to make more money. If you clear out one bedroom, maybe you could rent the room $$$. You have lots of space, just need to put stuff in the proper space. Good luck

I just discovered your video. For many years I’ve used natural cleaners… baking soda, vinegar, bleach. I have made liquid laundry detergent using “ Duggar’s Laundry Detergent “ recipe. Once you get the 5- gallon bucket and the few ingredients it’s not expensive to make a batch. A 5- gallon bucket of detergent lasts me about a year. Organizing a little at a time will eventually get it cleared out. Cedar bars with hanger help keep moths out of clothes. I find them at Walmart in the laundry area.

It’s a nice cozy home! Do you own the trailer or is that rent? Or is that lot rent? Just curious before I navigate retirement.

That's ok. Yes I rent the lot, own the trailer. I don't recommend it. Owning makes better sense.its cheap now, but going up much faster than my COLA increase.
