Living as a Muslim in Recovery: Finding Your Place with Abdirahman Warsame | Confident Muslim

Trying to fit in and learning ways to cope with trauma, Abdirahman Warsame found himself within the clamps of addiction. Looking for a way out, he realized how hard it was to get help and that many others in his community were struggling silently as well. At just 21 years old, through his own recovery, he decided to do something about it.

Am so so proud of you habo, as Somali mum my deepest wish is that our young people are supported and encourage them to support each other. We thought coming to Western world was to succeed and now realise just how dangerous it can be. Especially for those of us struggling as single parents in alien culture. May Allah protect you Abdirahman I cried throughout your speech. You are strong and have your whole life ahead of you. May Allah protect Ameen!

Addiction is a disease which usually requires detoxification and stabilization with medication in initial phase. Following this most chemical dependency programs provide counseling and may use 12 steps which focuses on belief in a higher power. Most people need to stay on medication until they develop coping skills and learn to deal with their triggers. As Muslims we have been provided with these tools to cope and move forward through prayer, dhikr and much more which allows us to change negative thoughts and behavior into positive ones. For the person in recovery it is a battle every day to put these in action so it is a slow process but can be attained. However, in my clinical experience many people don’t want to go into rehab or take medication which is the best way to start. “Allah swt doesn’t change the condition of a person until they change what’s in their hearts” . May Allah swt help those who are struggling with this test and help them succeed. Ameen

Thank you Abdirahman, this is amazing May Allah give you amazing things Ameen it's so sad subhaana'Allah, that people go through this i see them, muslims subhaana'Allah may Allah forgive me for judging them ofcourse any addict can change addiction likely starts from having low self worth And you almost always find a mental health issue attached to the addiction Thing is when we feel low in worth we feel pain and try to numb ourselves in different ways Some choose drugs and it’s really sad that people can feel that unloved and unworthy because Allah gave us such a high honour through islam I like to read surah Duha when I feel low and just the ayah ‘Your Lord has not forsaken you nor is He displeased’ fills me with so so much reassurance Alhamdulilah because walahi it is so true that ‘Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest’ nothing else actually soothes it like the words of Allah

May ALLAH bless & guide this brother !! Walhy he’s right we need to be able to turn to our community our masjids! I suffered from addiction for along time. Been sober for some years now alhamduila! I remember turning to the local masjids for help & being turned away & judged
