Livestock Guardian Llamas

We are participating in the Chick-a-Woof Ranch Livestock Guardian Animal Collaboration with some other KZread homesteading channels. Each week a new video about livestock guardians is being featured on several different channels.
Here is the list of participating channels:
Chick-a-woo Ranch released their video on May 1st.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeBT9...
The Texas Boys are scheduled for May 15th.
kzread.info?searc...
The Grass-fed Homestead will be ready on May May 22nd.
kzread.info/dron/c2k.html...
Homestead Handyman is on May 29th.
kzread.info/dron/vKS.html...
Teal House Farm on June 5th.
/ samg004
Heritage Hills Farm on June 12th.
kzread.info/dron/xv6.html
We are featuring our llama in this video. Our llama, Penny, is on loan to us indefinitely from our sheep breeder. We didn't have our perimeter fence quite complete yet when we got our breeding stock so we couldn't get a livestock guardian dog. Instead, we got Penny the llama.
Llamas offer some protection to sheep from large predators such as coyotes and wolves. They aren't as aggressive as a livestock guardian dog but they do have some benefits they offer that dogs don't. Check out this video to find out more.
If you've gotten any value out of this video, please consider supporting our channel through our Patreon account: www.patreon.com/user?u=5886520

It’s true, llamas go to the bathroom in the same spot...unless they free range and you have a large property like we do, they might have 3 or 4 spots but again it’s the same spots which makes collecting their manure super easy :) Love our llamas!

Great job! I'm thinking maybe a Llama might be in our future because even though our guardian dogs do a great job protecting, they are not always with the goats and sheep and if we can pick up a free llama to hang with the herd 24/7... win win. Thanks so much for the info and education on guardian llamas. Cracked me up when Penny was using that tree to scratch her underside... hilarious! Thanks again!!!!

I'm worried I am moving to Cabool, Missouri in March and our neighbors had a cougar on their roof. How can I garden or have animals with a threat like that around. I am nestled up against a wildlife reserve too. So I will employ every tactic I know but maybe gonna need a llama and donkey and several dogs. You can see my property if you go to our new page! If you know any breeders let me know.

Never use a male Llama either. When a female sheep or goat comes into heat the mal llama will get on top of them and try and breed them and it will suffocate the goat or sheep

I am truly enjoying watching Little Buddy getting so good at helping on the homestead. He has gone from being a little scared to being very confident with new things in just a few months. If nothing else this homesteading experience has proved to be the BEST thing you could have done for him. Of course you also have grown in your confidence and ability. I am so happy for you all. Trying To answer a few of the questions from my experience with llamas, my dad raises llamas and a baby llama costs anywhere from 1,000 to 3,000 depending on a number of factors like breed of llama and size etc. Males are very protective of the females and females are very protective of their young. They prefer hills or higher elevation as he said and will actually form a circle with young in center covering all angles from predators. Very low maintence and can be loving animals, also for whatever reasons dogs love to roll in their poop.

Great video and a potentially great series collaboration. My guardian animal of choice would be a donkey, but TexasPrepper2 once had a "guardian" donkey that killed some of his lambs! Since I'm considering getting some sheep at some point, I'll definitely have to do my research before making a decision about guardians. Thanks again for this and for all your videos -- they're enjoyable and informative.

I LOVE LLAMAS and my dad just bought me a stuffed animal llama that is life sized. Since I'm only 10, I can't have my own. I live in the city. My great Aunty and my dads family were having a text marathon and we all had to text each other. My dad was talking to my great auntie and turn to my surprise, my great Cousin owns a FLIPPEN LLAMA FARM! IS THAT JUST A CAWINSEDENCE! idk hope to spell it lol

Awesome! You should go visit! Some are really great animals. Some are mean as snakes. Ours was a really nice one.

Cute animal, but it does look a little like a camel. It's kinda like a big brother to the sheep. I wouldn't want to see Penny's mad.

Can llamas tolerate hot weather? Do they have to be sheared, like sheep? I think a livestock guard dog will be my last choice. Right now, I am thinking donkeys or mules. At least we can ride them or use them to pull wagons, or sleds, logs, pack animals, etc. Though they would not do anything to hawks and owls.

They can tolerate heat but they do need a shearing. What is your aversion to the LGD?

I see LGDs to be a big responsibility, and not for everyone. There is a lot of potential for a very aggressive dog, if they are not from a serious breeder and not raised in a way to prevent it. I was raised with German Shepherds and am no stranger to strong, protective dogs and the need to train them. But, I was not prepared for an LGD. I watched Tommy Alderman's video of him talking about his dog attacking him over a piglet. I had a similar thing happen over a dead baby goat that my dog became ferocious over. That has been over 20 years ago and before I had internet or access to mentors about LGDs. I had books and magazines, but that was it. If my children had woke up before me and ran out in that field to see the newborn goats.......well, I don't want to think about it. The same for Tommy Alderman. If one of his grandchildren had come upon his dog protecting the pig....... And if tommy, himself had been alone, he would not have survived that attack. He almost didn't anyway. I don't want that kind of responsibility. If I lived on some big ranch somewhere with very valuable livestock and large preditors, maybe. But the risk of an LGD hurting someone is not something I want to take. I found that people perceived these dogs as big cuddley teddy bears and would not hesitate to approach them and try to pet them. That rarely happens with other breeds of dogs, like German Shepherds. People understand that they are a guard type breed. Also, I don't enjoy a dog that I cant handle safely so I can care for them. Like you found out, you might not find a vet that makes house calls for a dog. My cousin that had the LGD that came with his herd of meat goats, could not be handled, unless sedated. Justin Rhodes has a video of them visiting a farm. His wife was next to an area with a LGD. The LGD approached the fence, quite and calm, appearing to want to meet the visitors. She reached across to pet it and it tried to bite her. My LGD would do the same. I watched that dog and knew that was about to happen, because my dog had the same body language. Patara has a video of her introducing her new LGD to her current one. I can say, her older dog made me nervous watching him, because I knew by his body posture and reaction, he was not accepting. But in reading the comments, I could tell others did not, The comments were he wanted to play with her. It was a good thing there was a fence between them. At the time of that recording, he had no intention of playing with that pup. Also, I have two good farm dogs that work well for me. Being herding breeds, they can't be left alone with the livestock and would not stay anyway. That's ok with me, they still manage to run off anything that does not live here. They make great farm guardians and varmint dogs and keeper of the children. lol And then there is the added expense to having an LGD. Dogs are not cheap to maintain and rehoming an LGD, should it not work out, is difficult. They wind up in rescue, quite often. At the moment we only have horses, but when we can figure out how to fence our place, I want to get goats for clean up purposes and because I like them. Not sure how we will deal with the coyotes, maybe bring them to an area near the house at night. Our biggest problem will be free roaming dogs. And then there is the possible lawsuits, if the dog should bite or attack someone. So for some farmer and ranchers, the LGD has been a wonderful tool for the farm, but most get along fine without them. The LGD is a fairly new concept in this country. I love dogs, but I prefer to just have the standard all around farm dog that works beside me and lets me know when something on the farm is not right, then goes with me to see what the problem is. A dog that has our back. The kind of farm dog that our ancestors had. But that is just me. :o)

This might be a "dumb" question but do you plan on shearing the sheep and Penny? If so, will you be doing it yourself or hiring someone to do so?

I only have a couple sheep that require shearing so not enough for commercial pursuit. I will just trim myself. As for Penny, that will be up to her owner. I don't know what her plans are for Penny

I didn't. Blue (my LGD) came here when he was 6 and he was already well-trained. I didn't have to do anything. I did that on purpose because I didn't know if I'd be able to take on the task of training

I noticed that you purchased a Great Pyrenees after posting this video. Did you find that the Llama was not very protective ? I have know several people that tried them and all said they were not protective of the flocks. One man said the neighbors dog came over at will and chased his sheep and the Llama showed no interest. Then on a different day the dog came and nipped at the Llama while the Llama was eating at the feeder, and the Llama stomped the dogs head flat and went back to eating.

We got our Akbash LGD several weeks before I made this video. The llama is great. We made arrangements to purchase the dog before we had the llama. The llama isn't ours either. She is visiting indefinitely.
