Liverpool to Birmingham with Megabus. The Pros and Cons of UK Coach Travel.

I couldn't believe the price of this trip! Another absolute bargain but if I could describe UK coach travel in a nutshell, this would be it. Yes a total bargain, but when you consider how far away it is from Liverpool to Birmingham and where the coach actually goes to on the way, it's no wonder you're left thinking 'why didn't I pay a bit extra and take the train'!
Well, not everyone's in that fortunate a position and maybe not everyone wants to either. And in that respect I'll be focussing on the actual coach itself, the journey and of course what you're going to get for your money.
Let me know what you think guys in the comments because as always, I really value your input. Let's have your opinions, I'll be really interested in the consensus. I'd also be interested to hear what you think about smart motorways. A good idea or compromise on safety?
Thanks for watching another of my videos. If you've enjoyed it, I'd really appreciate a like or even a subscribe (if you haven't already).
Cheers for now.

I work in the Events Industry. I drive a minibus of staff from Liverpool to various places around the UK. I then work the event for a week or so and then drive the staff back home. If any of the staff cannot finish the event for one reason or another, they get the MegaBus back to Liverpool. Its only happened once or twice in the years that I have worked away and the threat of having to MegaBus home with the lingering shame really motivates the lads to finish an event. I have never had the pleasure of enduring a MegaBus ride and probably never will so thanks for the eye opening video.

Paul. Having worked in Hotel Management for almost 40 years, until I retired in 2021, there were UK Hotels known to many of my peers, that you always wanted to visit, or stay at or even have the opportunity to work there. Equally, there were hotels and Operational Companies whose properties you just knew to avoid at all costs. The Adelphi was one such hotel. There was a TV Series about it, in the 70's or 80's, a sort of a "Fly on the wall" style about daily life in that hotel; it was dire, and utterly cringeworthy!

I did the reverse journey you did between Birmingham and Liverpool via Manchester, where I had to meet with a group of mates that arrived from Italy and it was on a packed CrossCountry train which I booked well in advance and could not get my seat. Your videos have become an important part of 'homework' when planning trips - thank you! :-) One thing about Megabus and the 'sub-contracting' they do for certain routes is that the vehicles can be a bit hit and miss. On the Swansea/Welsh routes some are white-painted NE (presumably) hand-me-downs. Whereas one I took last year from Heathrow was state of the art with mood lighting! So a mixed bag.

Hi Mark. First of all great video. To answer the question I posed yesterday, the seats look a great improvement as does the toilet compared to the older coaches. It does go round the houses a bit and if you take the slow train from Liverpool to Manchester you can pay less than £4. That said I do find the coach more relaxing and interesting than the train and there are virtually no announcements or rolling screens to distract you and you are guaranteed a seat. I am off down to London in June with my Mum and it has cost us in total £44 inc seat reservations on National express, the cheapest Avanti fare from Manchester was £150 total for 2 advanced singles both ways so it’s a no brainer. As for the RAC building I have been inside and it’s not so glamorous and only a couple of offices have any views, the rest is like a vast open office with very few windows. The Adelphi is owned by Britannia so therefore appalling and best avoided.

Great video, Mark. I think that the choice of coach or train is always train for me. I like to see more of the scenery and less of the concrete and traffic, so I pay that little extra, but I have been on coaches from the North East to Staffordshire during my University days. I like the option to walk down the aisles and also know that there is more than one amenities on the train, and the ability to move train coaches if there is noise. My son is into trains so it's our most used method of transport. He re-created your dining on the train video in one of his own videos, with a large tissue as his table cloth and a small selection of food 😂 Hope you're well. Andy.

I hate losing the hard shoulder. I understand a 4 lane motorway can ease congestion but if something was to happen, how are the emergency services to cut through 4 lanes of backed up traffic to attend to the incident? Also breaking down/blowouts tend to be fairly sudden so trying to limp to a refuge area whilst avoiding the motorists behind would be quite the challenge

For me, the issue with these longer distance coach journeys is the need to travel to hubs to use them. I live in Essex so, for example, if I wanted to travel to Glasgow I'd need to get to Victoria coach station in order to make use of the cheap coach fares. The cost of travelling into central London makes this approach uneconomical, to the extent that travelling the entire distance by rail (which also requires changing in central London) works out slightly cheaper in most cases, as well as being considerably faster.

I believe it's one of the longest single routes in the UK. Mark you're not wrong about Sandbach services south. Back in 2004 it was rated the worst in Europe, and little appears to have changed since. As a resident of Sandbach I regularly use the motorways in this video. Smart motorways are anything but, people often break down inbetween the breakdown areas and cause an obstruction in the left lane. This causes people to switch lanes and if anything makes things more dangerous. When serious accidents happen it is virtually impossible for emergency services on the ground to reach the accident. This results in the air ambulance to being deployed which of course means the opposite side of the motorway needs to be closed to allow the helicopter to land. This didn't happen nearly as often when there was a hard shoulder. Imagine the cost of deploying the air ambulance an a more regular basis. Keep up the great work.

I did a journey with mega bus last year which encompassed the same journey ( I went Leeds to Reading via Manchester and Birmingham. For myself I would never travel with megabus again. Yes it was cheap but I would not advise for anyone with any degree of disability. The design of their coaches with the seating deck sitting very high above the luggage container meant the coach had several very very tall steps to access the coach. I am 5' 3" and had to virtually crawl the steps with great difficulty. On leaving the bud I had to sit on each step and climb down and getting off was very painful and scary. I have weakness and restricted movement my knees. I mentioned to the driver on exit. He was very rude said I should have asked for the bus to be lowered but did nothing to help me. Never again !! Never !

Hi, I was under the impression that the minimal seating behind the driver on the lower deck could be reserved but don’t quote me on that. It was good to see on this bus that there is a large reserved area for a wheelchair (right in front of me you will have seen it). I haven’t seen that on NX or Flix yet but I do think that is a step in the right direction and I guess over time, the old Megabus fleet will be phased out for these much better vehicles.

Always the trouble with UK Coaches - they use UK roads! Which are always crowded, very slow outside M-ways, and prone to traffic delays. Been trundling up and down the M1 a few times recently and there always seems to be chaos at some point. On my journey I saw loads of Nat Express, Megabus and even Flixbus vehicles - it struck me that the Megabus livery is now looking a bit old-fashioned and dowdy nowadays....very easyJet but duller in colour! In contrast I passed a Nat Exp coach in something rather like the old Scottish Citylink livery with large Saltaire cross on the back that looked very impressive!

Great review as always Mark. Coaches compared to trains really are down to cost Vs time and that's how train companies can justify it. £15 is actually quite cheap compared to London-Bristol which is around £40 for the train. When you pulled into Manchester there was the coach Bus ta Rhymes, which I saw in London Victoria back in January 😂 Smart motorway, not a fan of them myself. As for the Adelphi hotel, unfortunately I stayed there a good 10 years ago doing Majestic holidays. Horrible place, like all Britannia's (Shittania's) but it's not the worst. That honour goes to the Burstin in Folkstone. I think Walk with me Tim has done another review on it, will check that out later.

Seemed to be the place where old furniture from rooms being modernised was being stored rammed with huge 19th century stuff. IIRC the Adelphi was used to film scenes set on the Titanic due to the similarity in interior appointments. Although these days I don't imagine they make up the fire in rooms for winter warmth as used to be the case. Don't hesitate to try it.
