Live-work under loft bed in 13m2 Paris micro-studio

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When Jay Swanson moved into his 140-square-foot apartment, a former maids’ quarters (“chambre de bonne”) in central Paris, he had already pared down his possessions to two duffle bags in order to live aboard a hospital ship.
Dissatisfied with an old bed and desk that nearly filled the room, the science-fiction-writer-turned-vlogger took advantage of the high ceilings to create an upstairs using an ultra-tall loft bed with enough space to stand underneath and chunky stairs that double as storage drawers.
To turn his bathroom into a hybrid kitchen, he removed the urinal/bidet and replaced it with an induction stovetop and tiny washing machine. He admits midnight runs to the toilet down the hall aren’t always comfortable, but are worth the added space.
When he first moved in in 2017 Paris was his dining room and living room, but in times of Covid, he has had to readjust to being confined to 13 square meters for months on end. He credits his rich creative life - writing (he wrote “the world’s first real-time fantasy blog”) and video editing (he’s made his living with his KZread channel since 2017) - for expanding any space beyond the four walls.

@@SD-qt1fs I agree. I've been living in Paris for 25 years and I've seen this city turn into a stinky, filthy overcrowded dumpster. Everything here is noisy, grey, repellent and batshit crazy expensive. On one side, the gentrification killed a lot of small handy shops while rising the rents even more and on the other one, there's a massive flow of poverty in this city - "migrants" and homeless people who turned some parts of Paris into genuine slums. You can add all sorts of visual and olfactory pollution, unsafely, insane traffic... The fantasied idea of a romantic and beautiful Paris is long dead : this capital is just another Gotham.

How does Kirsten make a 14+ minute movie about a 140 sq ft space? Imagine her touring a typical 2500 sq ft American house. That movie would be 14 minutes / 140 sq ft x 2500 sq ft = 250 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 4+ hours long.

Your statement about masks also shows a lack of knowledge. Humans have worn masks in many instances of human history. Look at the plague for instance or at the first world war. Also look at the numbers of persons dying at an early age due to dust lungs. Nowadays people wear masks all the time in many professions. Starting with the painters in the car industry or coal.miners preventing coal lungs, but there is many more and I am sure you could come up.with a lot of you d actually research the topic. Another interesting vlog. Love this channel. Jay is new to me so I’ve gained something from the get go. Cool guy and added onto my reading list! My take on this is that whilst micro spaces drive a hyper-efficiency in the way you adapt to them, paring down possessions to almost monastic levels, which is fine, there still remains the question, how small is too small? Living in what is tantamount to a shoe box cannot be good for anyone’s mental well-being. Condensing and overlapping what should be discrete areas, like a kitchen, bedroom or ‘front’ room, just highlights this as a compromise. To live in a small space, on a permanent basis, surely would drive a ritualistic behaviour based restriction rather than a sense of freedom or enlightenment?

I love your layout and if you really want you can definitely cook. I saw KZread on people living in Hong Kong apartment. But your space is nice as it is.

It really makes you appreciate what you have, I live in a nice home, 3600 sq ft and sometime we want a larger home with more rooms (due to children). This really inspires you to transform the space you do have to fit your needs.

This would be a really ideal set up for Hong Kong as well. Our mixed-use home spaces are pretty much laid out similarly. I wouldn't mind having an option of sharing a bathroom, but it's not on the cards for our culture. Our furniture and washing machines are exactly like his because we get them from Europe 😂😂😂 We do have one advantage, which is that we have to have air conditioning or we would fall apart, haha!

15 square metre could be enough to live for 1 person If there is enough window surface with natural light. (I used to live in a ~13-14 sqm caravan during season work, so I have enough experience about that.) I can say that, a good interior designer could design a much-much more space efficient flat, but this one is just fine if he satisfied. ;)

I feel you should rip out the bed and just build a platform because the ceiling is high enough.Turn the bed and sofa bed space upside down. Not only you don't have to worry about the stairs, you also gain much natural lights and utilize the daily space above better. If you have extra budget, you can also include a bath tub under the platform that can be open up when you need it, tuck away nicely when you don't need it. The toilet need to convert to a Asian style toilet-shower, not only you can release more than half of the existing bathroom space into the main living area, you can also build a kitchenet that include in the living space. It will be an awesome well design studio flat.

A fun thought exercise if I was to live in the same situation how I would design the space to maximize the square footage. I wonder if the thick shower walls could be removed and replaced with glass planes to maximize the shower space?
