LIVE - SCREENWRITING AMA: “When Should I Give Up On A Project?”

Ойын-сауық

Today I’ll start with a topic almost every artist faces sooner or later: how do you know when it’s time to give up on a project?
And then I’ll get into a related question: how much can you allow to change in a project?
WE ALSO TALK ABOUT:
- sometimes it’s best to describe a character’s body language instead of giving them dialogue. But actors don’t like to be told how to act. What’s the solution?
- What do you do if something you’re writing might hurt someone you know? (And on a related note:)
- Is it okay to write about real people in your family and use their real names? (No!)
- as a failing artist: is it worth it? is it worth eating s--t and sacrificing the chance of a normal, stable life? (Yes: reconsider your goals and definitions of “success” and try to build a life that allows you to live AND write some stuff...it is very possible to do both, and worth it.)

Would you ever do a series of videos where you talk about each of your main writing projects (that never got done) and talk about the assignment, your work experience around it, what went write, what went wrong, what you'd change now, what you learned from it, etc? I just ask because any time I hear you talk about a random project of yours, I always want to know more about it and your process. :)

I have been wanting to do more of that - but the time involved in sorting out the facts and making a plan to present them is just too much while I'm trying to write a novel. When that's done I will likely delve into this.

Watch this video! Lots of great content. One of my favorites was the point about establishing the core of your story which you stay true to or stick with even though changes can happen all around the core. The core can be a main character, idea, or other key element, especially if it is the "thing" that inspired you to write the story. If you must make changes to the core, then start another story, choose to have two stories. I like the idea of staying true to what inspired the story in the first place even if you end up with a second story. That has actually happened to me recently, but I didn't realize it until now. Those pages of notes, etc. I've been wrestling with need to be split into two stories. Thanks Glenn!

Any time! Very happy that talking about my own personal experiences and ideas can be useful. I have indeed found that figuring out what the "core" is for a project helps me make other choices...and also helps me "let go" a little bit, in a creative way. No one work is everything...and accepting that has been, for me, really liberating.

Another great one, thanks Glenn! The talk about how the writer themself maybe different at different times is interesting - I have written quite a few scripts, and several have changed me during the process, so I wanted to ask, if it is not too personal, if there were any projects that you have worked on that you felt changed you?

Thanks!! I will try to answer this in an upcoming livetream, when I've had time to think through a useful and not-too-personal answer :)

If you are not an intuitive writer, you will have to plan and if you don’t do it you may have to scrap projects. I have yet to scrap a project and I’m on my 11th feature. Are they all great?? Of course not. But I say never give up! Face the page alone and stop letting people destroy the vision for your story!

I agree - never give up (mostly)! But everyone's different, every project is different, and sometimes different choices are right for that artist at that moment.
