You've taught us so much, I want to say thanks. Wife and I aren't young, I turn 72 the 3rd. We're on the 4th year of our garden making it easier to care for each year. Built high raised beds with free log ends and added some metal ones. We put down landscape cloth and installed drip irrigation this year. I split drip into 4 zones of near equal gallon rates. Used 3/4" main line to 1/2" to shut offs for each bed. 1/2" runs along top edge, 1 T with 4 elbows making a closed circuit. I connected 1/4" drip lines with holes at 6" running length wise. This waters equally. Took a while to plan and install because I was unknowingly down with a liver abcess, but I'm sure glad we did it. Bought parts from Drip Depot.

My longday onions normally fall over before solstice already, because of thunderstorms. In previous year, I harvested them. Now I discover: even if they fall over like that and the leaves begin to look unhealthy, after solstice they still put on that additional bulb formation.

Flies in a compost can be controlled with mosquito dunk granules. The active ingredient is a bacteria (Bti) I use in my worm bins on occasion with no adverse results.

Tarp your compost pile. It keeps the moisture consistent and should stop your fly issue

I just got a retractable garden hose this year. Love it. It’s a game changer. I mounted it fairly high, (about 6 ft), so that it reaches the whole garden without dragging all over the ground or across the plants. Just take out as much hose as you need and there’s no garden hose clutter to destroy things. My 55 gallon drum for aerated compost tea sits right underneath. Perfect setup.

Thanks so much for another great livestream! I always miss them live, but look forward to listening to them out in the garden afterwards. One of my favorite parts of the stream are when you tell us about your teas/drinks you are drinking. Lots of inspiration! Chamomile always makes me sleepy, which is a good thing when I drink it at night. It is my first year growing it and for whatever reason it just started flowering, so I will have a harvest that I can use this winter. Keep up the good work!

I'm not sure I've noticed a sleepy effect from the Chamomile probably because I always combine it with the Yerba Mate so its like a calming and grounding boost!!

That's funny I must be ahead of the curve. I grew and harvested toothache plant this winter, just to see what it really was. I have some dried and I also made a tincture.

Speaking of onions, there was a viewer who asked about is onions starting to grow and being healthy, then the first layers turned yellow and died. Then the rest of the onion growth failed to grow and died. Mine have done this twice. Nate, you mentioned the reason and solution to this happening but I can’t for the life of me find which live chat that was! Any chance you or someone would know where that was? I have a lot of onion seeds left over so I was gonna use them up by practicing getting them growing well so I’ll be ready next February. I’ll use the greens that grow as I know there won’t be any bulb formation this year. Thanks in advance!

After harvesting the garlic, do you cut off the scapes and ferment them, or are they to mature at that stage? thanks

  • @gardenlikeaviking

they'll be far too fibrous and tough at that point... they need to be taken when the scapes have not yet started to straiten back out again
