A barge has struck the Pelican Island Bridge, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management confirms.

Barge broke from its mooring and was forced into the bridge by the current. Accident was around 1000 and traffic was allowed to leave the island around 1400.

The barge has no captain. It is powered by a tug strapped to the back. It broke loose and floated by itself into the bridge. The current can be strong up to 20 mph at the bridge.

This is normally a "little one." A few months ago a barge hit the Pelican Isand Bridge and took out a power line.

Traffic going to Pelican Isalnd was secured as of 1430. Texas A&M Galveston is going to close operations for Thursday since they haven't heard when the bridge will be available again.
