Southgates strength is his ability to impact the psychology of the players as a group, however he is tactically left wanting. He basically hopes that teams will sit back in the first 30 mins so England can score and then defend the 1-0 lead. This is how almost every match plays out. We don't really dominate teams when the opposition plays more attacking football

i guess i could have qualified to be picked too (i play for my sunday pub team) but ive got a lot of 90 mins footy under my belt this season in pub league.

If england have to win on Thursday against Denmark and Slovenia next Tuesday if we get through to the quarter finals, If Southgate will have to try and getting thorough the next round.

So I guess Gareth's excuse this time is "many players haven't played a full 90 minutes in a while". Only Trent, Trippier and Stones are players who have missed significant game time towards the end of the season and two of them got left on for the full 90. If fitness was a concern, why not make use of 5 subs and sub Foden and Kane to increase intensity in the forward line? As usual, absolute waffle from the man to excuse passivity and negativity from England

Serbia doesn't have a well organized team on offense and I think England simply let them have the ball possession because there wasn't really a danger looming. Should they attack for one more? Yes! But it's opening match and you play against inferior team so no need to risk an injury on your players.
