    I discovered your podcast thanks to the KZread feed algorithm gods, and it's became one of my absolute favorite ones; one of the main reasons is that Scott actually has balls enough to put his opinions out there in a clear and concise manner without a bunch of word salad AND without hyperbole, resorting to ad hominem or name calling just for the sake of view count. I love Scott and I also disagree with him on BYD. I live in China and study Chinese economic policy as a nerdy hobby. The issue is that Chinese manufacturing and especially EV's is artificially subsidized up the ass by the government out here, to the point that it's basically an "invincibility cheat-code" on competition. The end result isn't simply more competition, it's a hallowing out of the manufacturing base in that industry of that country as individual private companies can't compete with the Chinese State. EU experienced it hardcore in solar panels and the US experienced it in many industries that was a huge contribution to manufacturing leaving the US. Expect more trade-wars and tariffs in the future as countries seek to protect their industries from unfair competition.

This has a tendency to piss off your neighbors over time though. Hence the sentiment change on China in the US and EU over the last 10 years

    @@damonmhtan9490 I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing. I personally want as many countries to develop as possible. American economic policy for decades now has been about efficiency...outsourcing so things can ultimately be made and sold at cheaper prices. I'm actually totally ok with that as long as everybody is playing by the same rules. The problem is when you have a state that is artificially making things cheaper with the intent to export them to the world at the cost of the importing countries industries... that is a problem. Very few individual private companies can compete with an entire nation-state. If its all just free market economics - I'm totally ok with US companies going where things are cheaper. If its about state-induced and supported mercantilism... thats something I think its perfectly fair and logical for countries to take steps towards countering.

    The problem with Disney is two fold 1) They have massive expense structure from all their acquisitions, and 2) The public isn't paying big money for movies anymore. So yeah, they have to downsize all the infrastructure they bought AND make movies people actually want to watch. It's not hard on paper, but someone has to execute.

    There's no need for conspiracy theories of "thumbs on the scale". Just the fact that Reels and TikTok are run by different machine learning models, trained on different data, and most importantly, that are probably optimizing for different target metrics, can entirely explain the differences described. Algorithms make more decisions than most people realize.

    Great presentation. Worth pointing out Meta was found several times systematically minimizing pro-Palestinian voices and posts. Also look at the quantitative analysis of coverage by the major US news sources (NYT, The Post, etc) which shows a similar skew as what you point out at TikTok only towards the other way. I would argue this is less the Chinese government directly tipping the scales and more young people finding an alternative pov there in a way you can’t find through those other sources

    Scott hit 1 point that is very important.... THIS run up, may be the final divide between the haves and have-nots... due to the labor displacement that will happen due to AI.... but breaking up the companies won't help though.... this final divide is due to the nature of the AI technology, not the size of these companies. Scott also missed the point that correction did happen and will happen. we had ~40% drop nasdaq in 2020 and 2022.

  • @LaszloMag

    @LaszloMag

    2 ай бұрын

    Yeah I reflected on your second point as well - if 2020 and 2022 were not corrections I don't know what is. The problem with corrections though, is that the have nots are always waiting too long before they get in, so they miss the boat, and them fomo in at the top, and then the cycle repeats. The haves, on the other hand, who's been in the markets long enough, are the ones taking advantage of these opportunities, so market corrections and subsequent runups tend in my point of view lead to even greater divide between haves and have nots. And the only way to protect yourself against this, or to make sure you get a piece of the pie, is exactly what Scott says; put a decent chunk of your money into the S&P500 every month, and then just go on with your life. That's the only way. Some people will get lucky and outperform the market, but 99% won't.

    Hi, Prof G. Here is a different look from your analogy of a relationship of Apple vs Spotify like a credit card company to a customer. The more appropriate way to look at this would be like this. Apple is a mall operator and real estate developer , it has nice locations, with lots of foot traffic, chic shops, fountains and green spaces, safety and security for merchants to sell their merchandise. Apple spends tons of money on maintaining this property in top shape and expects the merchants that sell on the premises to pay a fee. In this analogy, Apple also happens to make clothes , ( historically meaningful part of its business ) and obviously sells the clothes at the store. "Lululemon" says it is anti-competetive because Apple clothes shop does not have to pay 30% fee. But that fee is already built into the property maintenance. I don't think we would expect that Nike, Lululemon, Bloomingdales could says that they are forced to use these nice Apple malls to sell their merchandize and should not have to pay rent or utilities. Disclaimer - I do not own Apple stock.

    I thoroughly enjoy your podcast! However, I do have a couple of comments. Nvidia chatter, I get it, it's honestly fun to watch when it is going up, not so much was going down dramatically, but an event either way. And I enjoy perspectives regarding the stock, including Aswath's perspective, so I want to communicate that I enjoy the conversation. But I concur with Ed, most people own Nvidia in your audience and viewership, if not outright then via etf or mutual fund. And if your guidance is to mostly own boring passive etfs with only a small portion of assets under what I call "fun" investing then there seems to be a disconnect the message. Life and investing is about tradeoffs, most all of us are lucky in some aspect and not so much in others. Fair enough, that perhaps there are people that have not had a chance to invest at market lows of 08/09 but there are so many buts ....what about the lost decade which was actually longer than a decade especially inflation adjusted how would that have been motivating to invest during that time, oh invest your money and inflation adjusted you'll actually lose money for a decade! Or what about the pandemic dramatic drop in the market, people were scared until they weren't. Or what about those that had a promising life ahead...until war happened. All I am saying, is that we have all been given a set of cards to play and it's up to us to play the cards dealt to us and not spend more time than needed on mouthing off about it. I appreciate conversations/communications on how to play the cards dealt - the skills, tools, perspectives, habits etc. that will aid in that endeavor. I look forward to your podcast ever Monday so just sharing a few things that seem a bit odd.

    I have a question.Heard it else where and now from my role model Mr.Prof G..... America is so great in almost everything so then what happens to the rest of the other practicing democracies? Also I reckon Trump is keeping the Democratic party honest 😅

    GDP in Saudi Arabia contracted 0.9% in 2023. Driven by a major contraction of oil revenues, as oil prices dropped last year. I wouldn't praise an economy that is still heavily reliant on a non-productive asset such as oil, and with a spree of overly leveraged spending that is a creating an economic boom mirage..

    Help. I don’t understand the Texas joke. Or maybe it wasn’t funny? I get that she had to leave the state, but is there some pun I’m missing? Thx

    Me neither, I thought like you first, then listened again. I think the idea is that she has to illegally enter somebody's house and they will assault her, which will lead to a miscarriage, but if anybody has a better idea? If I was right, I understand the person behind stage, but the audience asked for it. :D

    @@Studeb I think this is close to it. it's an abortion joke and a "Texas has a lot of guns" joke combined. you trespass on someone's property while pregnant and get shot, thereby having a "legal abortion". pretty dark joke.
