Awesome interview. Both of these guys along with Tom Bukovac and many others inspired me to pick the guitar back up at age 30 after about 8 years of toiling in drug addiction. I had sold all of my gear for dope, but I've been clean for about 3 years and decided recently to buy some cheap gear and get back into playing. It has been an incredible outlet for me and I have guys like Guthrie and Josh to thank for it. I will be forever thankful to these two. Love you both!

Keep going brother, there's never a good reason or excuse to relapse or dabble. I have wasted twenty five years of my life and playing guitar to this sh@t heroin, and not finished yet, just started picking it up again, love listening to these guys plus other amazing players, missed out on so much... take care brother, hope you and yours are blessed with good fortune in your futures..

Guthrie’s a great dude. I met him when he was playing with Rodney Crowell at a festival. It was a fly date for him so I set up 2 deluxe reverbs as backline for him and chatted about guitars, the business etc. Like Josh said, he made a fan for life. I love the “This gig’s yours if you want it.” thing.

I got inspired at about 29 minutes hearing that with a mistake "nobody gets hurt." I get so worried about messing up that it limits me. Thinking about pushing oneself to the edge makes me think of Roy Buchanan and most of all Junior Brown. Junior sounds like he's on a tight rope almost falling off but never does. He gets to the edge of going off the rails in such an artist way.

These two are simply great, two really wonderful dudes. As an old timer (>50) I’m amazed at the access they provide to learning music and understanding the development process - can you imagine having been given this much insight and guidance as a young player? “I coulda been a star! (Haha)” GT shares the practical side of paying the bills, and he was lucky to have support and be in the right situations to link his work ethic; I still recommend having a Plan B, I.e. education, non-music skills, but these guys motivate to be a better and more complete musician. Thanks Josh, Guthrie, for making music, and life, more interesting and exciting!

Two of them Flawda boys that can throw down. Guthrie grew up in my back yard. Somethin in the water down here. 41 here. I did the exact opposite of Guthrie. While he was playing at the Flora-Bama, I was playing cover blues/funk/rock tunes around the other side of town. His originality is a very special sauce because of this. If I could do it over, I would say do it like Guthrie if you really want to develop your own style.

Josh, good for you on the A flat lesson. It bothers me that guitar players often don’t view the guitar as a musical instrument that can be played in all keys. I’ve had guitar players in my band that looked at me like I was an alien when I called a tune in B flat or E flat.

Guthrie has been my favorite guitar player since several years. I really liked that Guthrie mentioned Oz Noy and John Scofield as current inspirations. I think Guthrie's first album was a good starting point to launch a solo career, while the second album (to me) was a step back. Normally Guthrie does not share his plans in these online videos, but here he explained that he is trying develop further musically. Noy and Scofield are great, some of my all time favorites because of colorful melodic playing, jazz-inspired but accessible. But I think Guthrie has more of a natural musical talent, whatever he plays is very musical, and his articulation is the best (e.g. the articulation is not the biggest strength of Noy in my opinion). So I think if Guthrie writes some interesting original instrumentals and records them with top session guys, then he has a chance to build up a fan-base of listeners outside of the group of guitar students. But I think it's important that Guthrie is in charge, because his second album sounded as trying to make every participating musician happy -- that's not always a good thing for a career-launching solo work. I think what is needed is a further development on harmony and rhythm, a step away from the country into an own version of fusion.
