    I disagree that Manderly and Umber are inconsistent. You have to remember the two massive events that happen in between: the red wedding and the start of winter!

    Ya I was thinking that too. I was under the impression that Manderly and Umber where kind of spoiled men who spent most of their lives living in pretty good times. Then the red wedding happened and gave them a huge reality checks on what's important in life. Because ya losing a son or nephew is gonna do that. And then they had a new found priority in honour, history and their families. Preston will likely say that's not how George writes and ya but that is accurate to how real life people act. I have seen people get humbled quite a bit after a traumatic event.

    Yeah, theres also the fact that manderly wanted the hornwood lands but since ramsey is now lord of winterfell and roose is warden of the north hes not likely to have what he wants, theres the possibility he will try to leverage his support for the stark restoration to gain the hornwood lands, at least thats how i see it in general, i think umber and manderly have also geopolitical reasons to oppose the boltons

    I think the reason the Manderly's became Stark loyalists is mostly due to the Red Wedding, Wyman knowing Ramsey burned Winterfell through Wex, Lady Hornwoods fingers, and the fact the Bolton's ended up ruling the North. The Umbers are mostly the same. Their selfish ambitions were fairly low-scale. They wanted to increase the land and wealth of their local fiefdoms, but I dont think they had any intention of rising against their leige lord. Them becoming Stark loyalists after the Bolton's takeover seems completely sensible to me.

    Ships allow you to exert influence during Winter. And Winterfell should be investing in these opportunities directly - and this is what the mint does; it allows Manderley to create wealth independently of Winterfell. The whole chapter is about how feudal rulers work and it's almost the exact same concept as a Mafia Don 😂 It's Goffman, mixed with dark age and early mediaeval history - which is an incredibly interesting, complex and misunderstood period of history - which can at times best be described as the integration of capitalism and feudalism 3-9 centuries AD, and the first Celtic Tiger

    I would say that it's not entirely out of character for Mandery and Umber to suddenly switch from self-serving to pro-Stark. In addition to all of the events that happen in between, Winter and the Red Wedding, I think it's also important to remember that they are being left out of the new political order in the North, the Boltons are keeping them at arm's length. As a result, it makes total sense for them to want to install Rickon as the new Lord of the North, because that means that Manderly and Umber get to rule through Rickon until he comes of age, which won't be for another decade.

    On the issue of women at trial by combat, I somehow just had to add my two cents on this: At least for medieval Germany / Holy Roman Empire, there are detailed rules and accounts on how this would/should take place. For example, to balance out any disadvantages, the male competitor would be buried in the ground up to the waist, be equipped with less efficient weapons (Stick/club vs. sword/spear/shield) and so on... Would definitely be a fun thing to have Robert Strong be buried up to the chest with one arm tied to his back - although I doubt the idea ever crossed GRRMs mind...

    1:42:45 With the knight of the Vale invading the Riverlands - LF himself is much more connected to the Riverlands than the North, so it definitely makes a lot more sense for him to be interested in the Riverlands? There's all of his Tully-related childhood trauma... LF reminds me of another GRRM character (Bruce Bunish from Unsound Variations), who is obsessed with getting revenge against people from his past who bullied him and gave him a stupid nickname. I think LF wants all the Tullys dead (especially Edmure for the nickname and Catelyn because for years LF believed she slept with him when he was drunk, then publicly humiliatingly friend-zoned him during his duel with Brandon); he wants to replace the Tullys as ruler of the Riverlands (thus his interest in Harrenhal); he creepily wants to be with Sansa and mold her into the perfect version of Catelyn that lives in his head.

    38:00 One of the problems with the Sandsnakes fighting against Cersei in her trial is that it seems like its the accusers, or representatives of the accusers who have to fight in trials-by-combat? Cersei's main accuser is Lancel, and I'm not sure if knights are allowed to name representatives to fight on their behalf, unless they're also kings? Aerion and Dunk fight each other in combat; they don't seem to have the option to outsource the combat to a champion - the best Aerion can do is include more people in the trial, at which point Daeron the Drunken doesn't seem to have the option to avoid joining the trial-of-7 as he's accusing Dunk of highway robbery. The trial referenced in the context of Margaery and Cersei's trials is Queen Naerys' trial, where Ser Morgil (the accuser) seems to have faught in the trial himself against Naerys' representative (Aemon the Dragonknight)? I think the only case that goes against this is Dunk fighting on behalf of Ser Eustace Osgrey - though this is a pretty informal trial? IDK, am I missing any other trials? Most of the historic trials involve kings, who seem to have this kingsguard-shaped escape hatch when it comes to risking themselves in trials. A lot of the rules of trials also seem to be based on precedent, not laws written down though, so there's maybe more wiggle room, if characters can dredge up some obscure historical example that we haven't heard of? Realistically, I think the Sparrow Master Plan prior to the ADwD epilogue was to make Lancel the Faith's champion, to force Kevan to sabotage Cersei somehow in order to save his own son? Not sure what their plan is now, though. If GRRM regrets killing Kevan, that would be the reason why; if only he'd kept Kevan around just another 5 days...

    Lord Tywin a knight among other things names the mountain as a champion so i think you generally can name a champion if your old, injured, or otherwise not "suited" to combat, and if someone's willing to champion you in the first place, if your in your prime your most likely obligated to fight

  • @Mj_Jetson

    @Mj_Jetson

    @@teddycaliendo6744 Tywin wasn't the one accusing Tyrion; Cersei was. Tywin is just one of the judges. Cersei is the one presenting witnesses: Tyrion wondered what mad game Cersei was playing. Why offer a witness that believes me innocent? He soon learned. (Tyrion IX ASoS) "Have we heard it all?" Lord Tywin asked his daughter as Varys left the hall. "Almost," said Cersei. "I beg your leave to bring one final witness before you, on the morrow." (Tyrion IX ASoS) and Cersei in the one requesting the Mountain as her champion: His sweet sister could not have been more pleased. "He has that right, my lords," she reminded the judges. "Let the gods judge. Ser Gregor Clegane will stand for Joffrey. He returned to the city the night before last, to put his sword at my service." (Tyrion X ASoS) In practice... yeah, there's probably something about naming a champion if you're too old, but not sure how its enforced? Is it a matter of honor, where you get shamed if you name a champion, so no one does unless they have to? Is it a religious thing, where the Faith has to free you from your "protect the innocent" knight oath before you can name a champion. im not sure.

    2:31:13 Yeah... pretty sure that the show will make Daemon responsible for Blood and Cheese. There's a small chance that they will *just* make Mysaria responsible for it all, since she'll likely blame the Greens for burning down her headquarters and view it as Otto backstabbing her, but since Mysaria ends up as Rhaenyra's spymistress, they'll probably use it as a chance for Daemon and Mysaria to reconnect, and Mysaria to declare for Rhaenyra? In general, the show jumps at every opportunity to villainize Daemon, except when it would also implicate Rhaenyra (death of Laenor). Since Gyldayn implicates Daemon but not Rhaenyra, I think they'll go with that.

    18:03 Nah, Genna as regent makes no sense? Wouldn't it require a complete personality reversal from Mace Tyrell, Genna Lannister, Varys and Randyll Tarly just to make her regent? Plus it would stall the timeline to get her to King's Landing, turn Varys into an idiot if he doesn't kill her instantly and make the whole subplot pointless if he does - it just doesn't work? A better alternative would be that the Tyrells stop trusting and power-sharing with the Lannisters because they've been backstabbed too many times, and that refusal to cooperate is their downfall. Cersei and Robert Strong escape Aegon's takeover, flee to the Westerlands (maybe resolving a bunch of Riverlands plots?), and all the while freezing depressed Cersei is thinking that its going to be fine; she's going to get back to Casterly Rock and be in power and Genna will help her (insert flashbacks to Genna mothering Cersei). When Cersei gets to the Westerlands, everyone thinks she must be a fake as they'd heard that Aegon killed her, so Genna, Kevan's widow Dorna, Daven and Damion have been fighting for control of the Rock. Even if Genna privately acknowledges that Cersei is Cersei, she clearly thinks her niece is an idiot and would be happy to keep her away from power. To take her birthright, Cersei has to conquer the Westerlands very bloodily with the help of her superstrong zombie (inadvertently fulfilling Doran Martell's revenge scheme). Maybe she teams up with Euron too around then? I imagine he'd admire her zombie.

  • @Mj_Jetson

    @Mj_Jetson

    6 ай бұрын

    I believe Preston's theory is that Cheese is Larys Strong. Larys is a parallel to Varys, who routinely disguises himself so well that people who know him can't recognize him, even retaining a job as a lowly jailor (Rugen) on top of his spymaster career - Larys could've done the same with Cheese the Ratcatcher, to help him go everywhere in the castle and spy on everyone without them paying him any mind. Cheese, like Larys, knows all the secret passages in the castle. Its a fun and dark twist as Larys is the one torturing Blood for Cheese's identity - of course he'd report that Cheese gave no useful info on the subject. Larys is a weirdo who is insanely pro-Green who goes above and beyond to help Aegon (helping Aegon and his kids escape when Rhaenyra takes over; stirring up trouble in King's Landing to topple her) but is then insanely pro-Black when it doesn't help him (helping Corlys Velaryon do his coup which leads to Cregan Stark executing him). So who knows what his true goals and loyalties are? Secretly betraying the Greens might have made sense for him. If I'd have to guess, I'd say Preston thinks Daemon couldn't have done it due to basic logistics; Daemon is in the Riverlands when he hears about Lucerys. Mayyyybe he could've sent a rider on a fast horse to King's Landing, who then disguises themself as a peasant fleeing war to get into the city, or sent a raven to one of the castles near King's Landing, trusting that even though they'd been forced to declare for Aegon or be executed, they were secretly sufficiently pro-Rhaenyra that he could trust them to get a message to Mysaria? But it might be a bit of a stretch? Not sure it says how much time passes between Luke dying and Blood&Cheese playing out...

    The idea with Aeron i believe is that at one point in time the ironborn knew how to do the whole kiss of life thing and they were probably a remnant of the first men who probably created others or wights and the mouth to mouth on the beach is what survived throughout the years Harren wanted to do something in the gods eye its possible him and his brother who was the lord commander at the wall may have figured out about the others and were like "thats cool" and wanted an undead army

    For every Super Bowl before 50, and every one since, they used Roman numerals to designate what number Super Bowl it was. The only one that didn’t was Super Bowl 50

    I think the Manderlys are going to use The White Knife to bring troops to Winferfell using river runner boats. I then think the Umbers will use theirs to The Last River, take it to The Kings Road and then transport the riverboats and troops to Long Lake (not much of a distance) and then go down the river towards Winterfell. Stannis will be coming from ten Wolfswood after the Battle of Ice and these two armies can come from he North and South without being seen on The Kingsroad approaching Winterfell. The Iron Born sections of the world of ice and fire talk about how they were able to dominate the Riverlands by using riverboats that could transport troops but also be taken out the water and transported over land by such Troops.

    What is the point of killing and resurrecting Jon, if they’re not gonna do the whole “my watch has ended” thing. The oath gives him a super direct out, plus being rezzed by R’hllor would obviously give him a crisis of faith. I think it’s very much in line with the Jon we see in AFFC right before he gets killed to seize on an opportunity to leave the Night’s Watch and then to go and fucking claim his throne in the North. Especially if somehow word gets to him about his parentage? It’s not realistic to expect him to stay h the course as a black brother with so many shocks to his life.

    Alfie Allen is brilliant as Theon. Easily one of my favorite characters in the show! The worst actor/actress in GoT to me are Hannah Murray (Gilly) and Steven Dillane (Stannis). Steven Dillane has the authority, sure, but he's an absolute personality vacuum.
