Your videos on YT are one of the few really valuable materials on creating perfumes. I can learn handfuls from you. You speak my language and it speaks to me. You don't go over the perfume pyramid for an hour by drawing some confusing pictures on the blackboard as I can see on other videos from some other folks that say they are experts. Just the very facts. And above all, you do not hide your recipes, thoughts and experiences that are invaluable. I would also like to thank you for valuable links, especially providing a sheet in Google Sheets that makes perfumery work so much easier. You are a great example of how to do something for the community without crushing the viewers with your own products, courses, etc. Thank you!

I really love your videos. Because of these videos I have decided to get into perfuming myself. I'm so new to the craft that I haven't even made anything yet as I'm still waiting for my equipment to arrive from Amazon. I have a question for you. How do you know which raw materials to pre-dilute and by what percentage? Is it standard practice to pre-dilute everything? Please keep the videos coming as I find them incredibly informative and I will be looking to them to help guide me on my path!

So happy I found your vids. I've been trying to reproduce a discontinued toilet drop by Aesop and I couldn't get the punch the original has. It turned out to be your use of synthetics or concentrates to enhance other similar scents that popped that lightbulb over my head. It was those last 2 or 3 notes that I was ignoring on the ingredient list that make it pop. Thank you for the knowledge and inspiration.

Ooh I love amber perfumes. Il Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea is one of my absolute favorites. And Ormonde Jayne Ambre Royal or Royal Elixir which is the extrait version. I became crazy for Ambers after I got a decant of Tom Fords Amber Absolute a few yrs ago. I knew if I liked that one so much that there had to be better ambers out there. I was particularly looking for a nice amber rose perfume . I found many. I absolutely love discovering new perfumes and seeing my taste grow and appreciate unique and unusual perfumes. I used to say “oh I hate Ouds they stink like poop”’ but then I found some perfumes with beautiful smelling Ouds. I used to say I’ll never like tobacco or leather in any perfume . But I found some beautiful tobacco scents and leathers too. I never say I don’t like something coz u never know. I also found out that I love resins, balsams, ambergris and labdanum. When I first smelt a few of the Areej Le Dore perfumes I thought ewww nasty perfumes, how can anyone like those perfumes. But I got some samples and took my time to get to know each one and found the ones I really liked and grew to love then grew to love so much so that i bought back up bottles so Im never without the perfumes. So I went from eww nasty perfume to wow I really love and can appreciate the beauty and work that went into each perfume. I still don’t like the fecal Ouds. That I just can’t understand anyone liking. Why would anyone want to smell like poop. I remember one day I was in NYC on an escalator going up and I was right behind a few Indian women in traditional Indian clothes and I’ll never forget that the woman right in front of me smelled like she pooped herself. I kinda felt sorry for her. Thinking that she just couldn’t hold it . Til an Indian friend told me what I smelt was Oud . And that in India it’s the women who wear the Ouds and men wear rose and floral scents. Wow I never knew. You learn something every day...So I still can’t understand why any woman would want to smell like poop. Well to each his own just don’t come near me. Coz if u smell like poop I will call u out on it . Nobody should be offending other ppl on purpose. It’s just rude. Lol

Do you have videos on how to work out the concentrations of the perfume? 15% 20% 25% etc.

he said in a previous video that he uses google sheets to set out his formulations, so i'd think any spreadsheet software would help you out with that!

You're becoming my go to for learning. Thank you for your excellent tutorials. I purchased some undenatured organic 200% ethanol but it has an alcohol smell. Would Iff be the place to go for non smelling purfumer's alcohol? Or another site. I'd prefer one company to buy from; just easier at this point of beginning. Thanks, Rafael.

Hello! I am new to your channel, but WOW are your videos helpful! One question though, as everywhere I look I get mixed reviews/answers. I noticed that you just add perfumer's alcohol after mixing your oils. A lot of other places I've looked say to add distilled water and/or glycerine to make the perfumes last longer. What's your take on this? Do you recommend adding these ingredients or staying away from them?

Mines a 300g scale with readability of 0.000g. it's made by a company called US Solid and they sell for around $100

i'm following your videos closely. i't s interesting that you stress out the fact of combining EOs with synthetics. someone complained somewhere in other video that his perfumes smelled like cheap hippie aromatherapy due to only using EOs 😂. thanks a lot for your thorough and in-depth content. my very first batch of essences is already on its way!

HAHAAH, it was like 2pm in the afternoon....i didnt dare...

I think we'd be best friends. I love fragrances, but so many videos only use essential oils which smell too homemade. I think it is important to use synthetics alongside natural oils. I have an amazing fragrance that all of my friends love. The only problem is I have to wear it in the Winter time because it seems to attract bees. I think it is the Auralva that attracts them. Before you started talking about ISO Super E, I knew you were going to say ISO Super E. Would love to test out some of your fragrances.

Hi I'm new to your channel and I'm tryn' to gather every information I can get to make perfumery a new hobby. I was wondering if perfumers are using a standard formula when it comes to multiplying the volume of the blended fragrance from10ml to 100ml? I'm quite confused when it comes to the math of it.

Hi, isn’t needed any fixer oil in the mixed like glycerin or propireglycol (or something like that)? I heard that something like a 7% of it needed to be added to achieve longevity. Is that correct? Thanks 🙏

I just dilute them in ethyl alcohol. Trying to find the right dilution ratio is tricky though. I usually start with 10%, and try it in a few blends....and if I find it’s still too strong, I have to decide if I should take it down to 5%, or 1%. I even have some materials down to 0.1%. Another cool trick is to also find demo formulas of that material from IFF, Givaudan, Firmenich....and see how much they are using it in their demo blends. Then take an general average of usage, and determine what would be an appropriate dilution level to get to those some average usage results.

I keep them for a few weeks. And if after a few weeks I still decide it's not worth pursuing...I dump it in a large spray bottle (along with other failed trials) and make a room spray with it all, lol

Great video. Question: Let's say you're happy with this formula and you decide to make a concentrate. Are all your oils/synthetics at 100%? Or do you create your final concentrate with the pre-diluted materials? For example you added karmawood @ 10% in your trial. When you make a final concentrate, will that karmawood be added at full 100%? Thanks.

my 'prediluted' materials are just for making small trial batches. Once im happy with a formula that i consider as done, ill make a large batch of the same formula using nothing but 100% raw (undiluted) materials so that batch is 100% full strength and i can use that to make many bottles of perfumes are what ever concentration (EDT, EDP, Parfum, etc) i want with it.

when you say 2.5% of the perfume, do you mean the 20% of total fragrance within a perfume excluding the alcohol or the whole perfume including the alcohol? when you make a perfume ( not experimenting) to use, do you still use diluted or undiluted fragrance?

Hi, can I ask where you got your coffee absolute from? I've tried using natural coffee essential oils and co2 extracts and none of them were alcohol soluble because apparently they all have the same physical properties of a carrier oil.

I get mine from Liberty Nautral. Dilute them down to 10% in ethyl alcohol and it will be fine

How do you go from the little blend to an actual 100 mL bottle of fragrance? Do you just simply take the little blend you made and mix it with water?

Its a lot of math calculations in the formula to upscale to a larger batch of a finished product. But all in all, if your formula is finished and written out by a percentage of each material, its very easy to calculate what you will need to get a larger end result.

If you are using say 20% naturals how long do you wait for the blend to mature to know what to adjust? Or can you tell right after blending? Also the amber accord you made same question. I see there are a lot of naturals.

As with all materials both natural or chemical....I always wait 48 hours to let the blend settle in. Sometimes you can wait just 24 hours and notice a difference... But after the 48 hours mark is when I know it's settled enough to make good evaluations if something need sto be adjusted

Everything is by experimenting, and many many many different trial batches and tests. Its not uncommon to work and rework a formula 30-50 times until you feel its coming together into something nice. Some profession perfumers who work for Versace, Dior, etc claim it may even take them 80-100 trials before they come up with a formula they feel is good.

How do you calculate the % in total concentrate for each ingredient since they are of different concentrations. Thanks.

Hi, I had a question. If I want to make a 30ml perfume of 20% concentration. am I correct in syaing that I have to add 5g of concentrate and 25g alcohol. to get a 30ml of 20%concetrate? right

This is hard to answer, because you are comparing weight (grams) to volume (ml). If you did 5g concentrate and 25g alcohol....that would give you 30g (weight) at 16.67% perfume concentrate. 30g doesn't necessarily mean it's 30ml....weight and volume are different beasts. If you want a 20% concentrate perfume, your best bet is to make up 6.25g of raw material to 25g alcohol.. this will give you 20% and you'll have 31.25g total perfume. It's best to have a little extra than not enough to fill the bottle, because weight(g) doesn't necessarily convert to volume(ml) in the end.

Who cares how well (or not) my perfumes are. If you are interested in getting into Perfumery.....don't let someone else's success (or not) let it be the deciding factor. If you love smelling good, and like to be creative....it's a fun thing to get into. And if you get into it and find that's it's too hard or not interesting enough....then simply move on with your life and give yourself credit for at least trying.

I want to hang out and make fragrances with you.

I was interested in making ALL natural perfumes with mainly essential oils. I've since noticed that due to the volatility, the life span is short lived. Are their aromatic chemicals that are derived from a natural source? I have Iso E Super, Hedione, & Timbersilk just because I want my scents to last longer, but are they ok to use when you want scents that are more natural vs so many icky chemicals?

There are many aroma chemicals that derived from natural sources. Many AC's like a-pinene & b-pinene, methylanthranilate, cis-3-hexenol, linalool, cinnamyl aldehyde, eugenol, citral, benzaldehyde.....all are found naturally in fruits, flowers or trees....the list can go on and on.....

You need to know which naturals to use. There are many that last hours e.g. oud (real oud), sandalwood, fossil amber, resins etc. You need to build a good base. You also have long lasting florals. Citruses are highly volatile so they don’t last long but some last longer than others e.g. mandarin lasts long. You can also create an illusion of a long lasting top note e.g. pairing mandarin or yuzu with osmanthus. It’s about studying the raw materials. The more you know the easier it becomes to make long lasting naturals. Hermitage Oils and Eden Botanicals have a huge range of naturals and their quality is at the pinnacle.

Believe it or not, Ambroxan is derived from a natural source (clary sage oil). Ambrettolide musk can be from a natural source as well. Both will add longevity and diffusion in the basenotes. Also, most suppliers will indicate when an AC is derived from natural sources since it increases the price (and the market viability). For Ambrettolide, there are two versions, synthetic and natural, so make sure you get the "natural" one. It's also more expensive :)

Most synthetics are very safe and naturally derived from things in nature. And more so, because you aren’t applying them neat to the skin, they’re even more safe being diluted in alcohol. The ones that can be a little more concerning are Polycyclic Musks. These are usually the chemicals that you hear about causing hormonal disruptions and such. But again, these are to be diluted in the concentrate and then further diluted in the alcohol, so they are perfectly safe!

Hi, how long after making perfume can you sell it? Do you have to wait and macerate it for a month, eight weeks or more? How do I get rid of the strong alcohol scent from perfume so that it doesn’t smell like cheap perfume? Also, what kind of coloring is great for perfume? Water Soluble? If you can, which I would be so grateful, can you point me in the direction of where to buy the coloring for perfume? Is Nondenatured Ethanol better than Denatured Ethanol? Thanks.

The coloring I use is FD&C dyes. It's safe, commerical and easy to obtain. All you need is a red, blue and a yellow bottle...and you can make up so many colors with that

I use SDA-40B alcohol. That's pretty much the standard for alcohol fragrances. If you buy it at 190 proof, there is no need to add water to it...as it already has water added. If you buy the 200 proof, you can add water to it (as long as it's distilled and purified) at the final stage of bottling.

I have a question. do you have the result in your mind in your imagination before you start, or is it more like step by step and see where it will lead you to? how much of the final scent result do you have in your imagination before you start. in other words, an example: did Oliver Polge have a clear vision of spicebomb before he started ? or was he perhaps suprised himself what the resulting scent smells like? are there lucky "accidents" as well?

So i understand from this video that you diluted the oils twice, once as a predilution and another time when you added alcohol to make it an EDP, But doesn't this make the perfume weak ? I used to think that an EDP is 20% of raw oils and 80% alcohol

It doesn't make it weak.....as long as you do the math along the way. Some materials I use at 50% diluted.....some are at 10%....some at 1%. But even if the trail batch is weak, if you enjoy the outcome you can always do the math and reformulate it with raw materials.

After letting this sit for the remainder of the day, i think i may leave the nutmeg alone to 0.5% of the overall concentrate blend. But instead, ..reduce the Sweet Basil from 0.5% to 0.35% to the overall concentrate mixture. About to mix the new batch now, so i have this new variation batch to compare with the batch mixed from the video. ill keep you posted here.

So the AB test sat for almost 48 hours and was sniffed by myself and others. The favorite was: Keeping the Nutmeg at the original formula (1.14% of the concentrate), but reducing the Basil from 0.5% to 0.39% of the total concentrate. Lowering the basil allowed the orange(s) to breathe a bit more, and was the preferred formula.

What is the EXALTOLIDE TOTAL pre diluted with?

It's a VERY substantive and noticable material that should be used in low doses. It's a good woody-amber material, but it means a bit dirty spicy inan Oud facet kinda way compared to all the other woody amber materials. It's a tough material to use and doesn't work for all scenario's...but I find it's best to use around 5 or 6 parts per thousand or less In a formula as a starting point.

You put different kinds of scent, is that okay until you reach 100% of them. Its like you're experimenting your own scent?

Can anyone type ingredients name and percentage. Am new will be helpful

If you are referring to cleaning the beakers, pipettes and glass bottles.....I have a video on "top 5 Perfumery hacks" that talks about my own cleaning solution that I use (rubbing alcohol and degreaser)
