So you don’t ever rent a motorbike? Yes it can be dangerous, you need to be an experienced rider. But it’s so liberating to ride a bike and the freedom it gives you. I’am 71 and have had my share of accidents, one in the Kampot area, where some roads are not paved. Still didn’t put me of. Now living in Thailand for 4 years I still ride and know how to handle it! Fingers crossed 🤞

If you're planning on living in SR longer, I believe that you can definitely find the price you're paying now is a bit higher too. For me as a Cambodian myself, I can find about half the price you're paying.. accommodation, food, transportation..etc. but you're definitely on the right track. Welcome to Cambodia 🇰🇭.

Been looking for a cheap and friendly retirement destination for over a year ! -- Ended up between Siem Reap and the Philippines. So I watch everything I can find & Siem Reap appears to be my favorite + a very low cost visa friendly country if over 55. I'm old & on SS looking perhaps to enjoy my last days - w/o winters ! Frugal but comfortable is my motto. Long term leases can be much cheaper there if you were to stay there a while. Nearly 20K expats live there in a city of 250,000. Some only part of the year. For me it is the perfect size having almost everything you need - and - cheap one hour flights to Bangkok for fun - or - quality health care. Apparently many retired American expats actually thrive there on $800 - $900/mo. supposedly. --- Enjoy your time there. PUB STREET is awesome but even cheaper food I hear can be had a few blocks away from it ! - - - Thanks for sharing.

As a fellow Minnesnowtan, it was fun getting to know the Cambodian and Hmong kids growing up. Their grandmas always made the craziest food. Ya gotta figure out how your banking is going to work? Paying bills online is simple now. But getting cash from your USA bank to wherever you are in the world can be challenging. Credit cards make life easier, but what if there is an issue and your card gets frozen and then stopped? That happened to me in Indonesia. HAVE TO HAVE MULTIPLE WAYSTO GET YOUR CASH. Just figure out a plan before you leave USA. Once you leave, it’s hard to talk with your bank. The 1 800 numbers work for USA phones. Maybe you just pay for an international phone plan out of ATT or T-Mobile. That’s VERY pricey but it is possible. I no longer have a USA phone so it’s a pain in the keister when I have an issue.

If you’re going to spend a few months there….much better to rent an apartment. Mine was $150 a month.. for a nice clean apartment with cross circulation between windows, air conditioning which I never turned on. Nice fan..which I did use. Wifi, etc. $150 a month works out to about $5 per day. And I can get clean apartments there for even cheaper. $100 per month. I would never stay in a $14 a day hotel. That’s three or four times what I was paying.

You are probably asking actual costs for services? I live in a city of 600,000 in Indonesia. If I go see a specialist I pay them the equivalent of $12 cash for the visit. No paperwork or bills. A catscan cost me $125. Had to have emergency rectal surgery… not a planned event! Everything including three nights in hospital with private room, tests, medicine, doctor visits and surgery costs was less than $1400. I had a nurse come to my home every day to clean and change my wound site. Guess what he cost me? $6.25 cash each day that I needed him. It’s incredible how affordable healthcare is here just paying cash as you need it. The risk of course is a major health event like a car accident or cancer etc. But in USA I would pay medical, premiums and out of pocket charges that amounted to easily over $15,000 each year and I NEVER USED THE SERVICES. 😮. Just like throwing cash onto the street paying huge amounts and never getting any VALUE in return for that cash. Now, I only pay cash when it’s needed and I always feel like it was a reasonable charge for the service. The doctors can speak English, they are highly educated. 12 bucks to see a specialist? In Indonesia you can also qualify for a govt insurance plan that you pay for IF you become a permanent resident (not a citizen, just an equivalent of a green card holder). I now pay just over $9 a month on auto debit to give me the highest level of coverage available (private hospital room). Trust me, the VIP coverage means I get seen before other citizens who have a lower tier of coverage. It’s a no-brainer for catastrophic events.

I had been struggling working and paying from year to year for quite over twenty years. Now I am understanding that I don’t this kind of lifestyle no and it is just a vicious cycle. The only way to get out here is invest your money short term or long according to your financial situation. I am tired of living like this because you are slaving your to death and live to see no sunrise. I know the way out for me to invest money in the stock markets but I want to individual stocks because I don’t want money or time to loose. I did swing trades for four months starting $23,000 and end up $36,000 but before I comfortable understanding the stocks market. I lost $27,000 from the year 2020 to 2021 because I did day trading and moving around too much and not enough patience. Now I am much better since 2023 when I went back to the stocks market because the behavior of individuals and patterns that go up and down. Now I want to invest in short term before I gain confidence and momentum and building up amount of cash first before I invest in long term. Short term, two weeks to one year but long term one year to ten years and that’s my financial planning.
