Common Name : Little Stints
Scientific Name : Calidris minuta
Tiny Waders: Little Stints are among the smallest shorebirds globally, measuring just 5 to 6 inches (13-15 cm) in length. Their diminutive size makes them particularly charming and distinctive.
Impressive Migration: Despite their small size, Little Stints embark on remarkable long-distance migrations. They breed in the Arctic tundra regions of Europe and Asia and then undertake journeys that can extend as far as Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and even Australia during the non-breeding season.
Camouflage Experts: During the breeding season, Little Stints don a striking chestnut-brown and black breeding plumage. However, their feather colors change during migration and the non-breeding season to a more subdued and camouflaged grayish-brown, aiding them in blending seamlessly with their surroundings.
Foraging Techniques: Little Stints primarily feed on small invertebrates such as insects, crustaceans, and mollusks. They use their slender bills to probe into mud or sand, swiftly picking off prey with precision.
Social Birds: Little Stints are often observed in large flocks, especially during migration and wintering periods. Their social nature allows for cooperative foraging and better protection against predators.
Breeding Grounds: These small waders build their nests on the ground in the Arctic tundra. The nests are simple scrapes lined with vegetation and feathers. Despite the harsh conditions of the Arctic, they have adapted to breed in these extreme environments.
Distinctive Calls: Little Stints have a variety of vocalizations, including high-pitched whistles and trills. These calls are used for communication within flocks, during courtship displays, and to warn of potential threats.
Conservation Concerns: While the global population of Little Stints is considered stable, they face threats from habitat loss due to climate change and human activities, as well as disturbances at their breeding sites. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the continued well-being of these delightful shorebirds.
In actual their movements are faster, I have reduced the speed by 50% to enjoy their movement of foraging on a shallow water. Watching them is fun.
