    Honestly the best thing about Rick Moranis is that he put his family before everything when his wife passed. Dude gets dad of the decade nominations.

    For serious, mate. A lot of guys would have doubled down on work, both to provide for their kids financially and as a buffer against their own feelings of loss. Rick Moranis devoted himself to the emotional needs of his kids instead, like the frickin' legend he is, and I respect the hell outta him for it.

    @@randygriffin1859 Frank Oz restored it about 15 years ago. They spent *a lot* of money on that ending, only to have test audiences haaaate it because unlike the stage show, they fell in love with Seymore and Audrey.. so they reshot it at the last minute (they couldn't get app 3 of the chorus back.. that's why one hides her face in the happy one). The happy ending was the one I grew up with, but it always felt unearned.

    The puppet effects still hold up 100%. Everything with Audrey II was filmed at 1.5 (perhaps a little more) speed, the actors had so act and move and sing at that speed too. When played back at 24fps Audrey has the feeling of size and weight that just wasn't able to be filmed 'normally'. Outstanding movie.

    Actually, the reverse is true. They filmed everything with Audrey II at a slower speed (12 to 16 frames per second depending on the scene instead of the normal 24 fps), they used screen cuts to minimize the number of scenes where the plant & the actors were seen together & the actors would pantomime & lip sync in slow motion when necessary (it was Rick Moranis who did this the most often). The lower frame speed allowed the puppeteers to more precisely control the puppet's movements, especially in scenes where the puppet talked & sang animatedly, such as during the 'Feed Me, Seymour' sequence (which was probably filmed at the 12fps rate).

    22:35, it's the Director's Cut! This version, or in this case, the alternative ending with Audrey II taking over the world, drew so much controversy that test audiences did not like it at all. So they filmed a happier ending with Audrey II getting blown up by Seymour and both him and Audrey live a normal life.

    @@vodengc520 It remains a mistery why they would even show this to test audiences back in the day. It was, at least until the changed the ending, a one to one adaption of the musical. And musicals go through testings as well before they actually premiere. So why would you give two figs about what a movie test audience thinks of the the ending? The musical was succesful already, no further need to test the waters.

And just in case you’re interested, This is the directors cut which did not appear in theaters, the theatrical version (Which did appear in theaters) is also good. You have been introduced to the only person to ever play Audrey, Ellen Greene. She still performs this character and looks the same. Steve Martin used music as a huge part of his stand up. King Tut being one of his popular bits. Lots of comedy talent involved in this. Saw this at the theater in 86. Fell in love with it. The musical was written by the talented and taken from us too soon Howard Ashman. He is one of the biggest pieces of the Disney's second golden age of animation. He co wrote music for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. He passed away from AIDS. Lost a lot of talented people to that back then.

    Every scene with Audrey II (in large size) was filmed at 1.5x speed, perhaps faster, then played back normally. Gave the amazing puppets that fantastic feeling of weight and power that just couldn't be achieved using normal speed. The poor actors had to do everything fast too, including moving, singing and dialogue delivery. Also, you should definitely watch the "happy ending" theatrical cut since that's what most people grew up with, as the original ending where the plant wins has only just been released pretty recently.

    So fun fact about Audrey IIs puppetry: I love the effects in this movie but I could not figure out how they made Audrey II so articulate and open and close its mouth so quickly in time with the fast singing. As the puppet gets bigger it gets exponentially heavier, so by all accounts it should be moving extremely slowly. Rick is also interacting while it's doing all this in real time, so there can't be some trick can there? According to some behind the scenes content, the way they did is the shot all of Audrey II's scenes in a *way* slower speed (either 1/2 or 1/4, I forget) and sped it up in post. But what about Seymour when he's singing with it? Well, Rick Moranis was in those slow motion recordings as well. *That means he did all of his acting/singing in the scenes with Audrey II in slow motion!* A testament to his acting because its basically seamless! Also, The last giant version of Audrey took about 50+ people at a time to operate it.

Every time I've ever seen this movie, it's been the happy ending where Seymour saves Audrey, kills the plant, they get married and the closing shot is a baby Audrey II growing unnoticed in their garden. Out of curiosity, I was reading about what it took to operate the puppet of Audrey II, and there were at least 6 different versions of it for it's growth rate, they adjusted the speed of the film in certain places to make it look like it was talking convincingly, and my amazement was that performing the plant in it's largest form took 60 puppeteers to do. Wow. I have a lot of respect for that, can you imagine, working together to bring ONE creature to life for film? It also had to be cleaned and repainted after each day of filming, which could take up to 3 hours depending on the size of the puppet.

So they had to slow down the song and record at half speed. That meant Rick also had to sing at half speed PLUS move in a way that would come off as normal when played at normal speed. After the happy ending came out in the movie, new fans flocked to see live productions and were shocked at the dark ending. Thereafter, some theater groups began to stage the show with the happy ending from the movie. After a while, naturally, there was pushback by purists who wanted to see the original dark ending, so an updated version of the film was released with the original dark ending restored. I knew you would love this! I had to psych myself up to watch this because little shop of horrors freaked me out so badly as a kid! So when I was like 6 or 7 we went to the play and I was absolutely shaking in my boots scared of that plant! So my parents took my sister and I up to the stage after the show to show us that it was just a puppet and it had a trap door slide that people went down when they were “eaten.” The actor even demonstrated and said we could slide down too. My sister who was 2 or 3 then promptly decided that would be fun and jumped down the gullet of the plant. I freaked out. She of course had a blast but once we had her back safely I just wanted to leave. Flash forward to the movie coming out. I was a huge Steve Martin fan and my Dad thought that maybe I would get over the play by seeing the movie 🤦🏼‍♀️. He was wrong! It was horrifying and what was perhaps the worst part was that Steve Martin was creepy as hell instead of funny in my eyes so I was deeply disturbed by seeing him in a different light. Now as an adult, watching this with you, I can see the humor in it and why my Dad thought it was so funny. I’m still not a fan but I knew you would be. Maybe someday I’ll watch the whole thing again. Funny thing is that it’s been 30+ years since I saw it but I can still hear all those songs playing in my head. 😂 Glad you finally did this one.

    I have been waiting for this review for years, knowing Ashleigh was going to freak over this, SO Happy it is here! So a few things she should know: - Frank Oz = Yoda, Miss Piggy, and the director of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and What About Bob. - Alan Menken and Howard Ashman wrote the music and from their success with this is how they got the job to do The Little Mermaid and thus started the Disney Renaissance. - You got the ending that was initially filmed BUT not shown in theaters in wide release, because the 80's sensibilities did not like the unhappy ending. At the time it was the most expensive reshoot to drop the original ending, and thus the film was a HUGE financial flop. - Yes this is a remake, and the original film had the Bill Murray role played by Jack Nicholson in his first film role. - Also, Let's go to a nightclub.

    The original ending cost three million dollars, but you can tell the reshoot was done on the cheap, using sets they already had and the miniature Audrey II from "Supertime".

    As Frank Oz explained it - in the theater, you have a Curtain Call and the dead are resurrected. It is, after all, only a play. The people telling the story are done telling the story and they're back with you above ground. In a movie, if ya dead, ya dead. So movie audiences, unaware of the play's ending, we're scandalized. All this fun music, those two kids getting together for what? I mean, I don't know anyone who deserves to get chopped up and fed to a hungry plant 😉. Anyway, the test screenings tanked so they reshot the ending for the movie's. And it kinda made sense.

    Also, the recorded dialogue for the puppet was slowed down to maybe x.75 speed. This allowed the puppeteers to take the dialogue slower so that the mouth matched the words. Then it was sped up to ‘normal’ speed in post. And yes, Moranis also had to slow his acting down to match the puppet speed

    So glad you loved it! This is one of my favorite musicals as a fellow theater kid. I auditioned for a local production of it this summer, just for an ensemble role. I very unexpectedly got a callback for Audrey, and had to sing part of Somewhere That's Green. VERY challenging because that song almost never fails to make me cry and choke up when I try to sing it. I did well at the callback and met some amazing people, one of whom was a shoe-in for Audrey. Sadly, I ultimately wasn't cast in the show at all, as they decided last minute to have no ensemble. Biggest heartbreak of my year by far and I couldn't bear to go back and see the show. Thank you for reminding me how much I still love it despite that experience 💚

    Fun Fact, this is a musical version of a super low budget movie. The original is mostly known for being Jack Nicholson's first film role. Bill Murray was basically channeling Jack Nicholson's character. In the original, Seymour kills the dentist first, then has to pretend to be a dentist and pulls out half of Nicholson's teeth.

  • @E3WEINER
    @E3WEINER Жыл бұрын

    One thing I love about the scenes with Audrey II and Seymour is that Rick Moranis moved in slow motion so that the puppeteers could make all the motions and have them be timed together correctly. That’s why a lot of the times when Seymour walks he sways back-and-forth when you walk in slow motion that’s what it looks like.

  • @NZBigfoot

    @NZBigfoot

    Its a great technique ive not seen used in any large puppets outside of this movie (granted most actors cant do the slow mo Moranis could)... the puppet is heavy and very well articulated so puppeteering it in slow motion along with the actor moving in slow mo means you can be alot more accurate and detailed and get the motions and expressions and mouth shapes just right, then speed them up to normal speed and it suddenly defies your eyes... it gives Audrey a real sense of strength and power, those big heavy fleshy lips snap and move faster than you expect for an effect making it look like an imposing powerful frightful creature. Given greenscreenign advances nowdays being almost seemless, a partical puppet like this would be feasible against any actor... although having both in screen together at once will still be superior for the connection. Still rate it one of the best practical effects in cinema.

    When I was 13 I was in a production of LSoH as Seymour at my summer camp. Naturally I had a crush on the girl who played Audrey, b/c I thought it was a SIGN. Audrey II was voiced by this little chubby kid w/whom I'm still friends: he's a total metalhead now. SMASH CUT TO: December 2016, I'm working the coat check at my place of employment, and who comes in but RICK MORANIS. (I'd seen recent photos of him in which he looked like a little old man, but in person he looks great.) He played his card & skipped the line, asking me to get his coat. B/c of that and only that, as I handed it to him I said, "I just want you to know that when I was 13 I played Seymour in LSoH." He replies, "It's a fun role." I said, "It's a very fun role. Very glad to meet you; have a great day." B/c on the rare occasion when I approach a celebrity cold, I get in, I get out, and I never make them regret it. (Yes, that's what she said.)

    Now that you’ve seen this I recommend the documentary “Howard” about the songwriter. Howard Ashman (along with Alan Menken) wrote the songs for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and some of Aladdin, but passed away before BatB had finalized animation done-he did get to see a rough cut with the final score where rough animation was placed in for scenes not done being animated. Anyway, he wrote for Little Shop of Horror, and an actress for a diff broadway musical he did that never took off ended up getting cast as Ariel in part due to him. And since I know you said you grew up on Disney, I figured you might like the documentary. There’s also a bit in it seeing Angela Lansbury record for Mrs Potts.

    Howard Ashman and Alan Mencken were pretty much responsible for the Disney Renaissance. After the success of _Little Shop,_ both Off-Broadway and the film, they were brought on by Disney. They wrote the lyrics and music for _The Little Mermaid,_ _Beauty and the Beasst,_ and _Aladdin._ It was while they were writing _Aladdin_ that Ashman succumbed to AIDS. Tim Rice was brought on to finish _Aladdin._ BTW, _Little Shop_ is playing Off-Broadway again. It won the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League awards for Best Musical Revival.

    Definitely watch the theatrical ending. It was originally a black and white kooky horror film with Jack Nicholson as the Bill Murry character. Then it was turned into a broadway musical, and the lady who played Audrey is the same actress in this movie. The way they did such smooth puppetry of such a large puppet, they sped up the film and filmed slow, so Rick Moranis in some scenes had to lipsynch in slow motion and in some cases WALK in slow motion (which is ludicrously hard)

    I saw the 1983 London West End production with Ellen Greene reprising her off-Broadway role, Barry James as Seymour, and Harry Towb as Mr Mushnik. In the final song, "Don't Feed the Plants", all of the cast had been eaten and were on a darkened stage wearing black leotards so their heads looked like seed pods dangling from Audrey II's outstretched tendrils. Me too. It ruins the movie. I don't care what the stage play does. I don't care what the director's original intent was. Preview audiences hated this ending. They fixed it and made a great ending that fit with the rest of the movie. Don't go switching it back now without changing the title and warning people. I went to a showing at my theater a couple years ago and was blindsided by this, not knowing they actually recut it back in. It needs to stay a dvd extra. It was cool to see in that capacity. A lot of money was spent on it, etc. But it's one of those deleted scenes where I say I'm glad they cut that out.
