I am deaf too. It is a blessing to have a mature and sweet girl like her for helping her deaf parents. Deaf itself is only words. You can do anything hearing people can do except hear😊

Wrong. I disagree. A child does not always anything. Learned behaviors does not a character make.

My late husband was deaf. I started teaching our daughter sign language when she was a newborn. She made her first sign at 7 months old to ask for milk. She understood the sign as early as 4 months. I have a video of her reactions when I signed milk. Her sister recognized her fingerspelled name and the abcs before her 2nd birthday. Kids are more capable of learning then adults realize.

Neuroplasticity in children is recognised by science. This explains why children and young adults are very impressionable and have the ability to just learn stuff quickly.

My father is completely deaf, I am so proud of this little girl. Very sweet.

I still think it would be amazing for there to be a universal sign language that’s taught in all schools around the world. Would bridge the deaf community into the rest of society and would allow little to no language barriers when traveling internationally

People tried this with spoken language Esperanto but it didn't work. I don't think there will ever be a universal language. Even body language is different all over the world.

I mean this wouldn't work at all, you would need to create a whole new language and grammatical system. The grammar difference is so vastly different between some languages and even the amount of descriptive words in the language. It just wouldn't be possible.

There actually is. Two men, one from Ukraine and the other Japanese offering shelter to the war homeless, have re-begun teaching international sign language. Most students there are grateful because the level of their Japanese language is on different levels. Yes, we tried it before. We can do it again. Global communication can not leave everybody behind.@@CalmoOmlac

My favorite thing about this is that the natural confidence and helpfulness of this child, is the result of her feeling deeply loved. ❤

She may want to do something else with her life one day. I hope they appreciate the sacrifice she is making today, and will do the same for her later. 🙏🏽💜

I hope she finds what makes her happy and finds a career down that path. If she would truly be happy, being a doctor, I'm all for it. However, if it's just to make the parents happy, no thanks.

@AC-ih7jc she has broader shoulders at that young age than most adults out there. Thankfully, just because you don't like responsibilities doesn't make a difference in this little girls life. I have plenty of responsibilities in my life, including being responsible for other peoples lives. None of those responsibilities make me unhappy. They bring more meaning to my life. Besides, who are you to determine what her abilities are? You obviously don't understand what children are capable of. Nor can you tell that this child enjoys what she is doing, by helping her mom in the kitchen. Her mom even tells her she can go play if she wants, but she just wants to keep helping. When it's the childs choice, how is that placing any type of weight on a kids shoulders that they can't handle? At least this mother has the patience to let her daughter help, in order to teach her how to live. The world is not a big scary place that is out to get you. Well, unless you allow it to be. Just because you choose to let responsibilities scare you, don't assume everyone has to do the same.

I was overwhelmed when the dad hugged her and started crying!

I’m deaf and I do ASL (American Sign Language). It’s awesome that Niuniu is doing CSL (Chinese Sign Language ) to translate her parents!

Judging by her vivacious personality, she would have a wonderful bedside manner as a doctor.

There's a girl who's been working at a Chinese store here in the US. Since 4 years old. Now she's like 8. And I swear she acts like an adult. And understands order requests. She even grabs chilled/frozen seafood out of the cases.

I may not be deaf but I can tell when a kid is engaged and skilled in conversation and Miumiu is very skilled at it! She's really invested in communication for both parties despite it being a huge job for a child her age! What an incredible soul! She's a living blessing!

I hope that girl gets down time to hust be herself, play with toys, relax, and take pressures off. Very important ❤

This was my thought too. I empathize with how secluded the deaf community is from the rest of society, but a child should not have to be an interpreter for a business. Either hire and pay a real interpreter, or utilize technology to communicate quickly. At this point, they're just using her for free labor.

Wonderful! My daughter taught my granddaughter to sign so she could communicate before she could talk. As a young baby, she caught on very quickly and there was no crying over non-communication when she wanted her bottle, etc. So amazing.

There are a hundred angels residing in that tiny. She has so much love to give, she is radiating like a comet !

Such an inspiration to others. She will go far in life. Her parents have done a great job raising her😊

Real life Ha Eun Gyeol? This girl is amazing. Her parents must be very proud. Immensely responsible and mindful from such a young age. I hope she is showered with blessings, and that she is able to both enjoy her childhood and grow up achieveing all the things she wants to. ❤

This child/entrepreneur is a Pro . . . . what a beautiful sight . . . . what an Awesome Blessing this child is to her parents.

I absolutely love learning Sign Language because it’s so intertwined with daily life. You might not have been taught any sign language and yet sometimes you use a sign without knowing it. It’s so expressive & beautiful to see people truly engaged in LOOKING At each other when communicating because sadly today’s hearing community’s can speak to each other and not even look at the person like they are not even there.

I love how she acts like a little manager but literally she is !

What an amazing young lady. She seems to enjoy what she's doing and gets to spend time with her family at the same time.

She seems to have a great future ahead. Translating does come with its own challenges, as there aren't a lot of words that can be easily translated to English.

it's crazy how some people can be so mature and understand at such a young age, I could never be.

Even if Niuniu isn't able to become a doctor, she'll definitely find work as a medical sign language translator.

She is pure joy, what a treasure♥️ thank you very much SCMP for sharing this sweet inspirational story.

Her parents have raised her well. I wish their business lots of success, especially so that their earnings can be used to finance her future studies. May she succeed in school, remain healthy and happy.

What a little hero!

She is what is known as a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adults). I'm guessing that this little girl will grow up working in her parents' business for a long time, but I hope she is able to find her own life as well. There was a great movie called CODA that won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2022 that I highly recommend. It shows some of the challenges of being a translator for your deaf parents, with your parents always relying on you. I think it is still available to stream on Apple TV.

I watched a Spanish movie about this sort of thing once. In the movie the child struggled to go out and fulfil her own ambitions because while her deaf father was encouraging her to go out and do what she wants, her deaf mother knew that they'd struggle without her and made it known.

Precious little girl. So animated and full of life. Game changer for her parents. Too bad she is losing an innocent childhood aspect of life but hopefully it turns out well for her in China.

This is amazing. And he hugged her! I love that the younger Asian parents, like me, are able to show affection.
