Little bluestem: easy to grow and feeds the caterpillars!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
An ideal native grass for gardens in the northeast, little bluestem is a low maintenance plant that is instrumental in creating habitat for insects and birds in the garden. This easy-to-grow native offers three seasons of interest and helps the eco-friendly garden feed caterpillars and other insects. It is a key component of meadow gardens as well.

I really enjoy watching your videos. Just like this one I have even been going back and watching your older ones thank you.
Native grasses and sedges are very underrated for their beauty and ecological services. Grasses form the foundation of soil in prairies.
Thanks for spreading the word about native plants! Well done!💚
I like the little bluestem, have my eye on it at the local native nursery, just waiting for some work to be completed in yard. I have juncos who are ground nesters and they would appreciate it. They love nesting under my front porch in the meantime. They use to nest In the Japanese bayberry that the birds planted and I removed after seeing your video.
Thank you! I love your videos, I've grown some little blue stem from seed that I planted last winter in pots and left outside. This video was so helpful in deciding where to site it in my garden, I think I'll plant some butterfly milkweed nearby as well! :)
Just saw your video. You convinced me! I'm building a border next to my driveway (slopes). I'll be looking for 6-7 of these. So pretty, and so productive too. Thank you. I'll be watching more of your videos. 😊
Thanks for all these great videos!!!💖😊🐝🌺🌸🦋🌼👍👋
Beautiful shots that help me visualize it in my garden. Thanks!

I’d like to plant this near the road...hell strip.
Do you prune this in the spring?
I wished mine didn’t grow so tall. It flops over and splays wide open. Any suggestion? I do cut it back in spring. It’s only 2 years old.
Would you say that Little bluestem tends to spread around aggressively by seed, or no?

in my experience it needs soil disturbance for the seeds to root
When starting from seed, do you use a pinch of seeds? Or just a few?

That is what I am trying to figure out too!

@@garyphillips8079 My seeds delivered the other day (without good instructions) and I just sprinkled them - maybe 25 or so to start per clump. If it gets out of control, I can just divide it. I’ll let you know what happens

@@trevorashton1750 Thank you! What did you plant into? If too dense, you can just probably clip the seedlings as they come up to thin it out.

@@garyphillips8079 I just planted into some seed starting mix into individual containers. I probably should have put them in the fridge since it’s still winter for me, but I’m impatient

I asked the director of a native plant nursery about this. He said one seed per cell creates the clump you see in the garden in the video. No need to plant any more than that. I’m trying it and will see how that works out. Probably will take three years to reach full size.
From your video it seems little blue stems plugs are more successful than hair plugs
can I grow this as a lawn??

Not if you are planning to mow it.
