Litter-Robot 3 Yellow Light Flashing: Troubleshooting - Hard Reset

Here's what I told Litter Robot, " Every time it’s used, it half cycles and I have to power it off and power it back on for it to cycle. Pushing the “cycle” and “reset” buttons does nothing. Litter level is definitely low enough. Any ideas? The only light pattern is a blinking yellow light on the cycle button."
Here's the email that LR sent me that I reference in this video:
To perform a hard reset, please follow the steps below:
The globe must be at the Home position with the solid blue light on. With the unit powered ON, unplug the power supply from the base and wait 10 seconds. Plug the unit back in, allow it to complete the start-up cycle, and follow the steps below.
1.) Press and hold Cycle button for 5 seconds. Both blue AND yellow lights are now on.
2.) Press and hold Cycle button for 5 seconds. Yellow light turns off, blue light remains lit.
3.) Activate the cat sensor by pressing on the globe just above the entrance in a forward and down motion. The red light should come on now.
4) Allow the unit to complete the timing, cycle, and return to home position. At this time, the unit will have reset itself.
5) Flashing yellow is generally the Bonnet connection or Anti-pinch. Based on the picture, it looks like your Bonnet is connected properly so it may be the Pinch.     I'm back!!! I figured out my problem after probably watching this video at least 30 times. So if anyone is having the yellow light flash and can't get around it, it's got to be the pinch fault contact! When I bought my Litter Robot, it took about 2-3 years before I started having this issue. I was still within my warranty date so I contacted Litter Robot and they sent me a new base. All was well until this year and the problem came back. I just today learned that the pinch fault is the issue. If you look inside the waste bin, you'll see a clear plastic shielding on the ceiling of the waste bin, both on the upper left side and upper right side. The shielding on the right side is where the sensor is but the left side plastic shielding is the pinch fault contact sensor. Look towards the center of the waste bin on the ceiling where the hole is and you'll see two strips of metal and that is the pinch fault contact sensor. It's not in the clear plastic. Or pull your globe off and look into the waste bin. The left side of the hole you'll see a plastic cover and the pinch fault sensor is behind that. That contact is supposed to be "normally closed" and it appears after a couple years, litter dust and maybe even rust will build up between this contact so that it's enough to open up which results in the constant yellow flashing. I knew this was there but I didn't know how sensitive the metal is from creating an open connection. I took a wire brush and scrubbed the metal so that when they spring back and touch each other, they make good connection. I scrubbed it nice and shiney, which didn't even look that dirty to begin with, and then I followed the reset procedure AND ALL IS GREAT NOW!!!!! It is a real pain to gain access to these two metal strips so good luck! This was perfect timing because I'm going on vacation soon! So hopefully someone can read this comment if they are having an issue. My Litter Robot 3 has been working fantastic all day long! Edit: January 30th, 2024 Still working like a champ! I've added "cleaning the pinch fault sensor" to my cleaning routine which I do every 2-3 months. Going on 5 or 6 years I've had this now? I wished I had known about that damn pinch fault sensor back when I got it. Also, it's challenging to clean the contacts but I've found taking a strip of sand paper and pinching the paper between the contact and pulling the paper towards me scuffs it up enough to keep it clean and working. Hopefully that helps.

    Omg thank you so much for your post! I was having the same problem! I found the sensors, wiped them and made sure they were touching each other (they weren’t) and Walla! Back in the game!! lol.     Sigh. I've been fighting with this pinch detect fault for a while, I replaced the metal parts, still get it, just did exactly what you did, still get it. I'm starting to hate this thing.

    It’s likely a sensor issue. Make sure bag is installed correctly, it needs to be below sensor in front of the box. Next, make sure the prongs on the side of bonnet is attached correctly. Sometimes I have to bend mine slightly outward to get then to click into place

    When mine flashes the yellow light I have to take the bonnet off and clean around the sensor and then make sure the connection to the sensor is good by making sure the bonnet is on right.

    I had a lot of issues with the drum stopping half way, tried everything, cleaning the contacts, cleaning the whole unit, cleaning out the pinch sensor, this was over a couple of years, but afte a couple of days it would start doing this stop half way thing again. This time I cleaned the contacts with light sandpaper, pushed a little bit of cardboard in behind the contacts to keep them pushed out, and, I think this is what made the difference, i then cleaned out the little sensor on the top of the bonnet as the clear plastic oover for the sensor was full of dust, & it has not stopped once in a long time now. It would always stop half way leading me to think it wasn't the bonnet contacts, as it should have stopped at random points in the cycle but worth cleaning out the contacts anyway.

    This is an awesome video! I have a quick question. You were going to touch something at the back of the front guard but then went to the top of the Litter Robot to push a button? Could you clarify?

    sorry, there is no button. i was trying to do this step: "Activate the cat sensor by pressing on the globe just above the entrance in a forward and down motion. The red light should come on now." - but for me, the sensor always activates when i push on the top of it (like when i use it for balance when leaning over to scoop the only non-litter robot i have), so i just did that instead. does that make sense?

    Your advice is very good, I will use it. The unit motor lost power after 4 months, company send another one after another 4 months. Still issues with light coming on and off.

    I got mine in 2018 I think and I think their warranty is good for a year and half? At some point, mine was giving me issues and stopping until I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Ended up contacting them and they replaced the base for me which helped but now I'm having the same issue which is how I found your video. Google has your video as the top one but they also say that it's the pinch sensor that does it. I couldn't get it to work until I wiped the sensor, glass?, Off and then I got the yellow light off to even get me to your introduction of resetting it. I clean mine but it still acts up less than a week later. It really sucks because I won't notice and my cats will yell at me and I won't know what they want and then I'll see them trying to go in a corner and I'm like WTF man I literally just had it working! I can't be mad at my babies when they literally try to tell me something is wrong. It makes me feel so bad for them when this thing acts up. It worries me when I'm away for extended periods and can't fix the machine until I get home.

    I'm back again. This is the second time I've had to follow your steps to reset this thing. I've been tolerating it forever thinking it needs to be thoroughly cleaned but that doesn't always solve the problem this has. That damn yellow flashing light is so frustrating when I can't get it to stop.

    Thanks as always for the video. Our LR3 has been a dream. However, 3 years in now, and it will randomly go into "anti-pinch" mode and rapidly blink yellow. However, it only does this at the top of the cleaning rotation and (the weird part) instead rotating back to the right, it continues to rotate all the way around. I've just done the hard reset and will report back. Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks LR Fam.

The current problem I have is that the blue light is constantly flashing. I tried your hard reset and everything else went as you showed (e.g. yellow light on/off, red light on, cycle, etc.) but just with the blue light flashing during the entire process... I replaced the DFI in 2019 when I had the same problem but don't want to replace it every year... have you had the same issue with yours before? Thanks!

    Hi there! We can definitely help you with that blinking blue light issue. If the serial number says LR3CI124140 or below, this will take you through some quick steps which usually resolve this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4V-3JKPf6Xgm9o.html If the serial number does not say that, make sure the waste drawer liner is fully inserted in the drawer and press the Reset button. If the liner is up too high, it can block the DFI, making the unit think the drawer is full. If it continues after checking the liner, the DFI lenses might be dirty. They are located on either side of the waste port in the base. Give them a quick wipe with a cloth and then allow the unit to run a clean cycle. That should do the trick! If these do not troubleshoot the problem, we would be happy to assist you further: support@litter-robot.com

    I bought 3 litter robots for my 9 cats and one I'm having trouble with, at 1st I just started scooping litter, don't have time to mess with it. Yellow and red light in but not working, And another one the light stooped coming on at 9 mos old

    I’ve had to break down the globe, put it into it reset and I tried your way, but I’m not really sure if it’ll work the blue light will continue to blink once it comes back to its home position. I’ve had to hit the reset button to have it a steady blue.

    have you made sure you haven't over filled the litter? Or checked to see if the sensors around the waste drawer are wiped clean of "debris"? "Litter Robot Blue Light Blinking. Litter-Robot 3 is equipped with infrared emitters and sensors located above the waste drawer that check if the drawer is full each time the globe returns to the Home position. Once a full waste drawer is detected, the unit will indicate it is full with a blue flashing light."

    i think the default setting is 15 minutes, but you can change it to like 7 or something.

    I prefer the Bisque one because it shows less dust/dirt than the grey one. I like the look of the grey one more, but as I said prefer the bisque for what it "hides".

    Do you have any tricks to fix a Dump Position Fault? I've had my Litter Robot 3 Connect for 2 months now with no problems and now out of the blue the globe rotates just past the dump position then returns to the correct home position but I get the Dump Position Fault error with sequential flashing lights: Blue then Yellow then Red. The only way to get the Litter Robot to work again is to hit the reset button but If I'm at work or away then I can't physically hit the button. My only option is to remotely turn off the unit and turn back on which forces a clean cycle but would hope for a fix instead of my workaround.

    I'm sure others will wonder how long is the timing cycle after you've activated the cat sensor? In other words how long does the red light stay on?

    The default wait time is 7 minutes. However, you can change the wait time to 3, 7, or 15 minutes, so the red light will be on for as long as you have the wait time set.     I think this helped with my issue. Kept having problems with it not cycling on its own, no matter how many times my cat used it, then eventually it would be full of waste. Cleaned it out completely taken apart and still the same issue, except one new error would pop up saying "bonnet removed", don't know what could be causing that.

    @@Floppycats I checked it over and over. That round knob on the back that is supposed to secure in the notch on the base some how comes out every now and then, I just have to reinstall it and reset the litter robot and it seems to work fine.

    I ran this hard reset but the issue I have is nit only the blinking yellow light but that the unit stops mid cycle & if I open and close the drawer it will continue to cycle sometimes I have to do it a few times to get it to complete. I usually just keep it turned off to cycle it like that myself so it doesn’t get stuck when I’m not home. Any ideas why it would stop mid cycle?

    Great video but I wish I could just get a refund because my litter bot has had issues since a few months after purchasing and nothing works 😢. It always gets stuck mid cycle, tried this and still stuck with all lights flashing and every time I leave it alone for a day and don’t go through the process of manually pressing all of the buttons for it to cycle I just find a huge mess 💩 💩 💩 because it never works.     I haven't been able to hard reset. Mine is stuck on the rapid flashing yellow light. I've checked the bonnet and it's in right, pinch sensor is cleaned and still yellow flashing light. no matter what i try it won't go off now and cycle. I don't know what to do.

    Thanks this helped me reset it after it just stopped mid cleaning. But the one thing I can’t get it to do is on the app it will tell me it’s full but after emptying the cat litter bag and putting in a new bag I will reset it but on the app it will still say it’s full but even if it says full the litter robot works fine small issue but it still bugs me

    Have you cleaned it? Usually that’s because litter is sitting over the litter waste drawer sensor. So removing the globe and vacuuming the base and wiping it down will help.

    I have a fast flashing yellow light, not just blinking. Base not in home position, stuck in the middle of a cycle. What do I do? When I press reset, the blue light flashes, when I press cycle, blue light goes off and yellow light doesn't just blink it's a fast blink

    thsone did I say that in the audio? That’s my fault though for not reaching out to customer service in a timely manner. They solved the problem, fast. I shouldn’t have waited. I waited because I wasn’t ready to do this video (had to be ready to record). That’s always something that puzzles me - why customers comment on KZread videos about their woes rather than asking manufacturer for help.

    I don't suppose you have a suggestion for an issue of the robot being stuck on an orange/yellow unblinking light, not responding to anything (even the power button)? I've tried the hard reset, dismantling and putting back together the CPU. The bottom sensors appear to be fine. I've cleaned it well. Unfortunately I brought mine 11 months ago from a UK former international partner of Litter Robot and the company went bust a few months ago. I even brought 18 month extended warranty, but the company are uncontactable and I'm stuck with a broken robot 😞 I've tried waiting in the queue to speak with litter robot in the US but the international calls have already cost be a fortune! Sorry for the ramble, I'm a bit stuck!

    Mine is stuck with a solid "cycling" light and even resetting it won't do anything. As soon as I plug it back in, it goes back to "cycling". None of the buttons work or anything

    @Floppycats I usually deep clean every weekend. Take it out, wipe and vacuum it all down. And spray out and scrub the dome.

If the customer is unable to solve their issue through the troubleshooter, they will reach a form at the end that will prioritize their case with the customer experience team."

    Have you ever lost connection to the app and can’t reconnect to the app. I tried to uninstall and when I go to setup my device it says my Wi-Fi password is wrong

    i am not sure. whatever i was experiencing, it fixed. but sometimes it just needs to be re-lubed with furniture polish. how old is yours? i would contact support - bit.ly/3nvtZCo

    @@Floppycats I tried this hard reset, and so far my LR hasn't stop mid cycle in 24 hours. My littter robot is around 3 years, have repaired it 3 times so far and it isn't cheap to repair, each time costing us$100 to repair.

    @@TeleeFONE fingers crossed that this did the trick - did you lube the track that the globe slides in? you can do that with furniture polish according to litter-robot. i talk about that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qZ2a2NejgKvNYpc.html - sorry to hear that every time you have had to repair it's $100. what all has happened? i have never needed to repair either of mine - and my first one is over 5 years old.

    @@Floppycats A lot of issues, dusts and sands gets in the sensors, the pinch metal part got rusty and needed replacement, sensor replacement twice. Doesn't the litter or dust get into your LR sensors that is near the litter waste drawer? Ok I'll buy the furniture polish and lube that area. Before the hard reset, my LR seems to stuck in mid cycle every 6 hours, now has been 36 hours with no issue.

    My blue light won’t stop flashing won’t reset its completely empty and I have whipped off the red sensors for the fill

    I don’t know. I don’t have mine anymore and am losing memory about them. See my pinned comment and ask there. If you haven’t deep cleaned it in awhile, including vacuuming between base and globe, I’d do that too.

    sleep mode is for when you're sleeping or something and don't want the machine to operate - so that the sound doesn't wake you up.

    @@Floppycats I'm asking why the video is just showing it's regular operation. It's just putting it in sleep mode and taking it out of sleep mode then letting it run a cycle. How does any of this have to do with resetting?

    My litter robot 3 won't cycle. I have unplugged it followed all of your instructions and it just gets stuck on cycling with a blinking yellow light but it doesn't move. What should I do?

    Maybe try removing some litter? Could be Litter level is too high? How old is your unit?
