Litter Robot 3 Easier bag idea & pinch detect/yellow flashing light prevention. (detailed video#2)

More detailed instruction on fixing plastic cover to prevent slow flashing yellow light pinch detect error on litter Robot 3 Open Air, and better rubber band bag holder explanation.
Keep in mind the metal pincher detector pieces sometimes get moved or bent a bit out of alignment, or corrodes or gets too dusty and the contact doesn’t occur and if that happens you’ll get the same error even using the plastic cover trick, but the cover trick stops the litter debri issue completely and reduces the pinch error occurrences dramatically. Recently I disabled the detector all together when I found the metal ends slightly bent and not connecting. I just determined this safety wasn’t needed with my cats as they won’t go near the robot when it’s in motion and had no need for this safety feature that requires a lot of in depth fix adjustments and is truly a pain sometimes. Made another video about that and it works even better if it’s appropriate for your cat.

Yes! The bag idea is the best, wish I’d tried it years ago.. makes cleaning so easy! I found a much better bag recently than what’s in the video, though it doesn’t have the nice scent, but a bit thicker and less likely to tear, cheap too. Amazon: Waikas Trash Bags 8 Gallon, Medium Garbage Bags, No Flaps/Ties,1.31Mil Thickness, 55cm*70cm, 9.35g/pcs, Pack of 36 Count, Unscented, Black www.amazon.com/dp/B0CXXYVFBD/ref=cm_sw_r_mwn_dp_J6EEHG8WQQ68XS23ZFQH_2 I’m so glad the pinch detector trick helped as well! Thank you very much for comment, it brightens my day :)

I was recently gifted a used LR3 Open Air. Having had the LR2 for several years, I was excited to try it (there's a whole set of new cats now). Just 3 days in, I started having the fast blinking yellow light on a regular basis. It brought back memories as to why I had stopped using my LR2. After watching this video and incorporating your fix, I'm happy to see it appears to be back to working properly. Thanks to you and the wonders of KZread for getting this information to me. #litterrobot incorporate this fix!

This is good for a temporary fix!. What I found to be a long term maintenance solution is to either replace or clean the pinch detect contacts and once done install them and use a generous glob of petroleum jelly or dielectric grease to encapsulate completely the contact points of the switch. This protects the contact points from moisture and debris. Now the glob will over time collect dust and debris, but this is of no issue because its on the outside all the while the contact points are clean on the inside. The pinch detect system works as it should with no failures!. I've done this to my 3 LR3's well over a year ago and I've stopped having errant pinch detect issues!

This is a long term fix. I’d rather have contacts protected with electrical tape, then a big glob of grease that collects litter dust and debri. It’s a fix yes, but not necessarily better, plus who has this dielectric grease on hand? My fix has been well over a year as well, no problems. Not temporary at all. I appreciate your comment, but dislike Monday morning quarterbacks who could take the time and make their own how to.

@@shallahk8403 Its not an issue of whos workaround is better, the truth be told both of our approaches to the issue are just that, workarounds to a situation presented to us. But the real issue is why Automated Pet products (Now Whisker) didn't allow their R&D to use a moisture proof micro switch instead of the current setup in their final iteration of the product?. Why?, because the bean counters in the accounting department didn't want to loose any potential profitability and a 10 cent per unit switch (Wholesale) in the end was going to cost millions in comparison to a fraction of a cent per unit stamped and plated pieces of sheet metal that the product is exposed to while in use! (planned obsolescence perhaps??, Hmmm?! but I digress!). I forgot to mention in my previous comment one of the main reasons I use a petroleum jelly or a dielectric grease on the contact points is simply because the Pinch detect switch not only is subjected to direct exposure to litter, the dust it generates as you adequately demonstrated in your video, but because of the high moisture environment the entire bottom half of the base unit is subjected to due to the waste collecting in the waste drawer. The petroleum jelly is a moisture barrier!!! no moisture or dust and debris directly making contact on the electrical connections?, no further corrosion causing problems to the connection points!! Just like the plastic shield you have employed on the top of the base unit, the petroleum jelly is also a sacrificial material doing a specific duty, so far the petroleum jelly solution is holding up well with no reapplication for well over a year now. This highly corrosive situation the LR's are exposed to also causes the inadequately applied conformal coating on the DFI board sets to protect against moisture intrusion to become intermittent and or fail. What happened is the trapped moisture collected on the pins of the MCP23008-E-SS 8-Bit I/O expander chip on the Emitter board of the DFI, this corroded the high silver content of the solder causing them to electrically disconnect. As you probably know this causes the dreaded false drawer full indication and pinch detect errors as well. Before Whisker came out with the V2 replacement DFI that addresses the moisture intrusion issue, I was repairing the failed DFI's by cleaning and re-soldering the chip pins and applying an adequate moisture barrier to the repaired area. The repaired DFI's to this day are still doing their job as intended without any further failures! But again!, another work around!, But no matter what the workaround may be?, if it works? ya cant argue with success!

Great idea! I've been having the pinch error for months now. I've even replaced the entire sensor, which fixed the issue for a few months only for it to come back. Just last weekend I went on a short trip and temporarily replaced the LR with a traditional litter box. I did that because I couldn't risk the pinch error occurring while I wasn't home, as this error can't be solved via the app (turning the unit off/on) and where the globe is usually stuck mid-cycle (rendering it unusable). Fingers crossed this trick solves my pinch error too and I can go back to trusting the LR while I"m way!

It did for me, reduced error occurrences by huge degree unless the error was due to dust, or corrosion or movement of pinch detector terminal springs. I’ve also replaced the terminals and cleaned them, and removed any corrosion 3 different times. Recently I decided to try out bypassing the pinch detect sensor as I kept having error even though no debri was on sensor, most likely in need of another terminal replacement which is such a huge hassle. I did it 4 days ago on one robot and so far so good, no more pinch error. I plan to post the video possibly. But can send directly to you if you want it sooner. The only way a cat can get stuck is if it climbs into the litter robot when it’s completely upside down with the black rubber collapsing into the bottom and they manage to put a paw into the poop exit square cutout as the unit is turning, which my cats would never do, I can’t imagine any cat wanting to go into this thing as it’s turning. If you want the video of how I did it, you can send a request to my email. Or reply here with your email address. Squirrelnote@gmail.com

Lol, I just sent you info then checked here and saw your reply. That’s great!! It’s helped me immensely, usually lasts for me about 6 months, just depends on if anything gets behind it, but easy to untape top, clean trim old tape and retape, but very rarely dies this need to be done. Pinch detectors can get rusty or dirty too.. those are the little metal clips, clean them, use a mail file if rusted, or replace with new.. it’s a pain but that helps if its not litter debri causing your issue.

You’re so welcome! Later I figured out a way to just bypass the pinch detector all together. Did it about 2 years ago on both of my Robots. No more issues. I don’t have to clean or cover anything like I did in this video. I used the ziplock technique for sometime.. but then started having issues and found my pinch detector metal pieces were just a little bent and truly had the smallest gap between them where they didn’t touch, causing the issue.. so instead of replacing them, reshaping them.. so they touched, I cleaned them and taped together with electric tape. No more issues. This prevents the pinch detector spot in the litter shoot from stopping movement of globe, but my cats don’t go in robot when it’s moving or upside down with rubber hanging down, plus robot is supposed to stop if it senses weight.. so I made this fix 2 years ago and never another problem, no ziplock needed or worry it’ll stay in place. The ziplock is great if you have a new cat or kitten til you’re sure they won’t go in robot when it’s cycling. This bypass fix is in my video collection, If you’re interested :) Thanks for your comment! So glad it helped you ❤️

Thank you Kindra!! glad these tips might help you, they sure did me after I figured them out a few years into my owning my Robots!! Be sure to make sure you can fix your sensor with the cleaning, checking for alignment and making sure no corrosion. If fixing all those works and robot resumes normal action then this permanent fix is for you! So you don’t have to clean or take apart again. Sometimes the circuit board can go bad though and if that’s the case this fix won’t help until the circuit board or a possible connector issue is fixed. Just fyi, it’s good to try the usual fix for this issue as I wrote above then if all is good you can do the permanent and not be wasting your time. Cheers!! Thanks for your comment, and YES!! the bag idea is the best to make the clean ups super easy!

Love the sensor idea. I think I tried this before and forgot to replace it awhile back so I'm glad I saw this video to remind me to do this again. I've been having issues with mine stopping mid cycle a lot lately. I'm deep cleaning mine today. I'm completely taking it apart for the first time and removing the rubber layer and cleaning the inside as well. So I'm learning new ways to deep clean this. Once I get it back together I will take that ziplock baggie and place it over the sensor area again and hope that fixes the issue. I also recently just got a second Litter Robot for my room for my single cat. Bought a refurbished unit this time around. Opted out of the connect version cause I rarely use it for the other one. My cat took to the Litter Robot instantly. She's always been good about accumulating to new litter boxes over the years. I figured I'd test it out on her(powered off first). Not a single issue. She's so dang good. The others we got the first Litter Robot for took quite a while to get them used too it. Anyway, I do ramble. I also see you use the rubber band idea across the tray! LOL! I do the same thing! Glad to see there are so many good lil fixes out there these issues! Such a great community out there! Thanks again for you input!!! It's so appreciated!! It works great! Lasts months. Sometimes if robot is stuck in an odd spot too long or for other reasons, the metal pieces that touch on the pinch detectors can just slightly be bent out of shape and may have the slightest spacing and not touch, so be sure to check this too and for corrosion as well. OON e it works good, then the plastic works great, tape bottom of plastic too as I forgot this in the video! Also made a video to bypass the whole pinch detector sensor all together so you never ever get this error, but depends on your cat and if you think they wouldn’t enter litter robot when it’s moving or upside down.

Nice tips! Instead of using a cut bag to cover the weight sensor I just used a piece of robust tape folded over to just expose the sticky part. I then attached the tape just below the gray foam. Lastly I used some pledge furniture polish on all the areas the litter should flow down. I’ve found that sometimes the litter doesn’t slide down the plastic so well. This corrects that. Thanks again!

Another issue with the pinch sensor is the contacts themselves. If the used litter gets down into the contacts, they can corrode and this will cause an error because they are no longer conductive. Once that happens, the only solution is disassembling the base to get at the contacts and cleaning them or replacing them entirely. Something else I noticed is that when the litter builds up in the bottom tray, a large clump won't fall all the way down and will get caught between the rotating globe and the pinch bar, causing an error.

Great idea! I did not know that there was a pinch sensor until I saw your video. That was my problem. Mine was so packed and dirty. Cleaned it out and then ran 400 grill sandpaper between the contacts. Then covered it all like you did. The only difference is I ran it all the way under the sensor taping it just above the bin full sensor. The reason for this was mine got jammed full from some used litter shoved back up under the sensor. Weird I know. Thanks for the video. I am running smooth again.

So happy to hear the video helped! Always makes me feel good to come up with a fix for a design flaw, seems I’m always doing so for products you wonder how they get to market without anyone having tested them or seen the issues they have that could easily be fixed and make consumers more happy with the product. Though litter robot made this pinch detector for a reason, I doubt most need it, cats are pretty smart and not gonna stand in a rotating robot allowing a foot or tail to get pinched.

Here’s a link to a final more permanent solution if you’d like to see it, figured it out a couple years after the plastic bag trick posted here. It’s only appropriate for cats who won’t stay in or go in robot as it’s turning. It permanently blocks the pinch detect so you never have a need to clean or fix the terminal sensors or redo the bag square shown here. Anyway, if interested check out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJ2nrKmmg8yvm7w.html

Thank you for your comment. My bag choice is just the size I found in my experimenting that works and uses much less plastic then regular trash bags by far. I knew these worked so it’s what I recommended. Biodegradable would be better though for sure. These have very little scent and I just like the slight scent when changing the bags from a stinky one full of poo. This scented bag is stuck in the bottom of their litter box covered in cat poo and urine immediately after first use, and litter robot seals out the tray odors with its design. They are also extremely thin, and have very little plastic in them but alas yes, maybe I’ll find a biodegradable one that works better. I haven’t figured out how to edit KZread videos to change anything on them or I’d put your suggestion in. Thanks for the feedback ♥️

Could be other issues causing same thing. If you get a spot or debri on back or front of the clear panels that cover the lenses in your base, this light error can happen. I use a q tip wrapped in a bit of paper towel and a bit of windex to clean both sides, then go over it again with a dry piece. Also be sure to gently wipe over the lenses that these clear protectors cover.

Did you put your pinch sensors metal strips one on top of the other, then tape over to secure? I’m not sure what you meant in your comment that you “covered the sensor with tape”. The sensors don’t have to be rusted to not work, they may just have a bit of corrosion, but you can fix this with sandpaper to clean them, the wipe off dust and attach them together.

Occasionally the DFI sensors in these can go bad. The ones that came out with the wifi versions both failed for me in about a month and I had to replace. My previous version had worked great for years, no problem.. but when I did wifi upgrade to the panels it had me put in new DFI indicators and they were trash, as both failed and started having this error. I got them replaced due to them being newly sent out to me and it’s been only about a month. The replacements fixed the issue. But it was the constant litter debri I was sick of fixing and the metal sensors not staying perfectly touching.. that’s why I did this fix in my video. It solved everything. Just thinking maybe your issue is the DFI sensor if your still having issues after attaching the sensors and cleaning the lenses. That itty bitty part of the metal sensors that bends and touches the other sensor gets corrosion at the very top, did you clean it there?

It does the job for the most part, but I have to keep on top of it and not let that seal area get too dirty. The problem with mine (and others) is that sometimes the waste gets stuck during the first half of the cycle, then comes unstuck during the second half which results in the waste getting smeared between the base and the globe causing all kinds of problems and errors. It's a fundamental design flaw. I didn't see this addressed in the LR4 which is why I didn't purchase it. What I think is needed is some kind of the trap door built into the globe. The door would be closed during the first half of the cycle and trap the waste that falls while the globe is rotating. The door would open when the globe reaches the empty position releasing the waste into the tray. Then the trapdoor should close when the globe begins to return back to the home position. If any waste comes unstuck, the trapdoor will catch it and the waste will just spill into the litter when the globe returns to home. Just rambling

It overrides that error completely.

I really like Dr Elseys litter, if you buy on Amazon, using prime membership it can cost as little as $18 for 40lb and is delivered to your door. They have multiple varieties including unscented. It works well for me as I don’t get the smearing issues you describe and I believe it’s very low dust 99.something % dust free. If you set your robot fur longer wait period before cycling, this will also give your litter more time to dry and clump firmer before it rotates, there are 3 time settings if I recall correctly. Hope this helps :) cheers And thank you for your comments

Never heard of a flashing blue light of death. Usually this means drawer isn’t in place or is too full. If you’ve had it only for a month it should be under warranty still. I personally think they tried to do to many special checks on these that cause lots of errors that are frustrating. Less bells and whistles would help the basic function work better. I truly wish the errors weren’t blinking lights that could mean multiple things, maybe a small panel of lights and each one blinking is a different cause, it’d be so much easier to narrow down the issue that way. Then try to search for a problem based on color of lights and speed of blinking, that sometimes can have 2 or 3 different causes for the same pattern error. Thanks for your comment!

Love my robots, pay attention to light colors and flashing speeds, then do internet search for causes. I’ve fixed nearly every issue I had that way. Don’t give up, had mine going on 6 years, love them. Would buy all over again to never scoop and forget about litter for days then a simple bag empty and on it goes. Best device ever. Litter robot support shop has lots of info too..

If your robot is pretty new.. one thing happened to both of mine when I upgraded them to the wifi connect.. the upgrade came with new DFI sensors (drawer full indicator). So I replaced my old ones with the new ones and within a month one failed with error lights then blinking yellow, I called got a new DFI sensor sent free. Installed and no further issue. Then a little over a month the second robot failed, same issue. Luckily they sent replacement free again. I think many of these new sensors were bad and causing slot of peoples issues. They are pretty simple to replace, I’d be a heck of a lot simpler to call and have them send that out free due to your warranty then send in your robot for a new one that may have same bad sensors. If it doesn’t work then you can still send it in under warranty for replacement if done in time. But if it’s a flashing yellow light, and all your contacts are touching and lenses and metal parts are clean. I’ll bet it’s a bad DFI sensor as I described above.

:) the ziplock trick was my first fix, worked very well, eventually I figured out a permanent fix taping the trip sensors together so I never had to do the ziplock square cover again. It stops the trip sensor detection.. but that wasn’t an issue with my cats as they don’t go in robot when it’s spinning or upside down.

Be sure to do the usual fixes first.. Clean plastic pinch detector part that flexes first (the cracks), then clean both sides of clear screen covers over drawer full lasers, and the laser part too. Look at the metal pieces for the detector that touch and make sure they are clean, not corroded and actually touching. If doing these fixes fixes your problem and yellow rapid light stops. Then you know this was the issue, and this bypass will work for you if you want a permanent solution that you don’t have to repeatedly check and clean to fix this ever present reoccurring error.

Sensor is under the clear panels in the square opening at base of litter robot. One on each side. I’d trying cleaning both sides front and back of the clear cover, then run a dry cloth (microfiber if you have it) gently over the little squares these clear plastic lenses cover. Sometimes dust or a speck of something can stick to any of these surfaces and block the lens, making it think your drawer is full. Maybe that’s the issue? Hope it helps

This is more detailed info from the robot shop: The following troubleshooting should resolve the blue light blinking while the waste drawer is empty. Once resolved, the unit should consistently recognize when your cat visits and cycle accordingly. To troubleshoot the blue blinking, let’s start by power cycling your unit: 1.) Leave your unit powered ON with the blue blinking light engaged & Unplug your power supply from the base 2.) Wait 10 seconds then plug the unit back in 3.) Allow the unit to complete a startup cycle. If the light is solid blue, the code has been successfully cleared. If the light is still blinking, let’s proceed with troubleshooting. Let’s empty the drawer if it has waste and reinstall the bag before proceeding. Note: If you are using a dark colored bag, always tuck it into the tabs. Video: youtube.com/watch?v=NxgTYtk 1.8k … 7wDvu9AJcm BQ5k Let’s check your DFI Lenses for any obstructions: Turn off the unit and Unplug the power from the base Remove the Bonnet and the Globe Inspect the top of the Base where the Globe usually rests. Are there any debris? Small amounts of litter is normal. Clean as needed. Inside the waste opening there are two clear “Lenses” (left and right side). Ensure there are no debris on the Lenses. Sometimes litter can fall/splash onto them. ** To clean the lenses, we recommend wiping them off with a soft damp cloth and/or glass cleaner. Do not directly spray the Base or DFI Lenses. ** Replace the Globe and Bonnet. Reset the black key in the back of the unit into the pocket. Plug the unit back in. If you turned the power off, you will need to power it on and press “cycle”. Once the cleaning cycle is complete, the unit should be at the Home position with a Solid Blue LED on. Further Troubleshooting: If the unit continues blinking blue, remove the waste drawer and press cycle. Press reset 2x to abort the cycle and return the unit to home (it will level the litter). If the unit goes to solid blue with the waste drawer removed, ensure there is nothing in the drawer blocking the lenses. If the drawer is clear, your base needs to be repaired ‐ let us know that you tried the full troubleshooting without results. Please provide us with the serial number from the base of your unit (back inside wall, behind the waste drawer, on a silver sticker): SN#

Once you have a shape cut that you're happy with, including the right angle and notch size - probably after ensuring that it IS the right size - you could make a template for future pieces by tracing it onto some thick paper (a file folder popped in my head first, but something like the cardboard from a box of cereal or something would work too). Just remember, after you trace around the plastic onto the cardboard, you want to cut JUST INSIDE the line you drew. You want to do the same thing - cut JUST INSIDE the line - when tracing around the cardboard onto the zip-lock for any subsequent pieces. If you cut on or outside of the line, then the cardboard shape will be slightly bigger than the plastic piece. That might not matter TOO MUCH with the cardboard piece itself being too big. But when you take your too-big template, trace around it onto the plastic, and then cut on or outside of the line you drew, then your plastic is going to be EVEN BIGGER. Having to sit and fiddle with trimming the traced plastic to fit properly completely defeats the purpose of cutting a template in the first place. ~~~~~~~~~~ I watched your previous video and this video, and in both videos, you mentioned that you use not just any ziplock, but you specified that you use the FREEZER BAGS. However, you never explained WHY you use the freezer bags vs. the "regular" ziplock bags. I'm assuming it's because the freezer bags are made of a thicker plastic. Is that accurate? Also, does the plastic have to be clear?

I’ve had the yellow light blink like a strobe light and not move at all, and other times have it stop in the middle of a cycle, and just blink once per second. Sometimes it starts again, moves a little bit and then stops. Do you think this is also caused by the pinch sensor? (I only have the litter robot 3 open air though, not connect). Also that’s genius about the trash bag… definitely will try that out.

  • @shallahk8403

Sounds like the pinch sensor to me. Maybe try a hard reset too. My metal contacts that stay touching to allow robot to turn and if they get interrupted (separated)by the pinch detector (due to debri or corrosion or cat) cause it to stop and slowly got bent out of shape. So I kept having errors even with everything clean, you can bend them back into shape so they touched, but I was just sick of fixing constant errors for debri/dirt , so I figured out the permanent bypass to the pinch detector and that fixed all the issue. The bag idea I was so happy to figure out, hated stuffing corners into the tabs, this 8gsl bag around the tray is so much easier, cleaner and cheaper. Give it a shot, I think you’ll like it to!

I’d clean the pinch strip piece in the square opening, clean the clear lens shield front and back, then start cycle again to see what happens. If that doesn’t fix it, then take off the bottom and look at the metal strips that touch, make sure they are in contact, even the littlest space or bit of dirt between the metal touch point can screw up the contact and stop your cycle and cause yellow light. Also make sure they aren’t corroded, you can refresh them with sandpaper or get new ones for a few dollars. If this fixes your issue, then all is good and you can try out the semi permanent flat plastic bag piece I do in this video to prolong time between cleaning needs/errors, or try the more permanent solution if you feel your cat isn’t the type to step in the robot while it turns or trap a foot. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJ2nrKmmg8yvm7w.html Let me know how you make out, love to hear. I’d clean both sides of clear lens covers, then use a cloth to rub gently over lens these covers protect, if there’s a speck of dust it may be falsely reading full. You do have to push reset once drawer is emptied after being full, have you done that? You can also try a full reset to see if that helps. Just search online for instructions. The ziplock helped me a lot but eventually I went to a full bypass of the trip sensor as I kept having issues with dust or movement of the metal pieces that cause the rapid blinking yellow light to occur when something interferes with the rotation. I have 2 only for cases when it gets turned upside down in rotation and stops, usually due to a litter debri error, easy to fix. I tried another regular box beside it in case of this issue, but my cats always went to it first so that didn’t work. If you have the wifi notification one or can see it a minimum of twice a day I wouldn’t worry about not catching it when it’s not working and your kitties going somewhere else. 3 cats are fine for 1 robot, as long as it’s closely monitored. I myself have 4 so it does keep the emptying needs down a bit having two and I’m secure in knowing if one gets stuck upside down, at least they have another until I can fix the error.

Plus tucking the bag into the clips really sucks and the litter falls down between the bag and the wall of the box too making a mess under the bag. It’s a pain. My way is quick, super easy, costs $3 for a pack of 40 instead of $30 for a pack of 20 or so and no mess on the sides.
