Lithops Rooting Update And Discussion

Just an update on these few pots of lithops that I’ve been working on rooting through the winter when we typically would be restricting water. I also discuss Rooting lithops that have been severed from their root systems, and the potential pitfalls of assuming roots from the body of the lithops are going to survive the shedding of the outer leaves each year.

    I am going to follow your advice about watering Lithops that were purchased in the wintertime. I am going to see what happens later this year using this method. I have some Lithops that were purchased a year ago and they are still alive which is a record for me. I think it is funny that I have grown a number of plants for more than thirty years and still have problems growing Lithops.

    Hi. I bought my lithops about 2 weeks ago. I finally took it out of the small pot and I totally cleaned one lithops and waited 24 hours to repot, and the other one I reported right away. I separated the 2 lithops and I watched your videos twice to see if I was doing this right. I washed the 1 lithops really good and trimmed the roots》it still had the main root. The other one I just shook off the excess sand and repotted. Thanks for the advice 🤩🤗💗

    At about 12:31 I saw a little white bug crawling on one of the Lithops. (Towards the top of the frame). Just FYI if you didn’t spot it already.

    Joodie Shy, no worries it seemed to be a gnat, didn’t find any other bugs, but I did dose them with alcohol just in case and inspected all the other plants in the grow tent just for good measure! Everyone looks ok! Thanks for the comment though cause I’d Always rather someone say something even if I saw it! Better safe than sorry with bugs! ☺️

    Nilza Pereira De Melo, yes, I needed to get my FB page, instagram and KZread names to match so it wouldn’t be so confusing! And so I asked for ideas and this name was my favorite! I’ve always been an experimentalist, and Succulent Alchemy just hit the exact feel I was looking for! 😉. I’ll eventually remove my name or put it second, but I didn’t want to confuse everyone too much, so one step at a time! 😊

    I just subscribed to you channel, thank you for letting me join. I watched this video today and I have grown Lithops many times over the past 40+ years and am trying again from seed. But I do have problems I am still trying to work out. But what I wanted to ask you now, I grew some Lithops bromfieldii v insularis from seed and in the second year, when it split, I got 3 new plants come up, one of those had three sets of leaves. The next year when these split, one split ito two, one split into three and one of those had three sets of leaves, and the previous three leafed plant divided into 7 new plants. Any idea what was going on. I then killed the whole thing like I normally do. Thank you.

    Ashley, I purchased an extra pot of Lithops from Walmart for you. How do I mail the to you? I purchased 4 pots. One pot was soaking wet. I took them out of the pot and am letting them dry a bit. The roots are really good. I would love to see what you can do with them.

    Sorry to disapoint you, but im one who actually has grown a lithops out of a bare body. this is what happened one day my niece came to my house and was playing with a ball and accidentally the ball went into one of my lithop and broke it into two parts. top and bottom. i left the bottom as it was still in the soil. and took the top half and put it into wet soil left for a week and started sprouting roots out of the bare body i was amazed when i realised that i actually was going yo have two lithops instead of one. I still have this lithops and it has change twice its leves.How would you explain this? Plants in my opinion are adaptable and can defied science... or at least you opinion of science..I would love to see you book of science where it said that lithops can't form new roots from a bare body! because i dont know how then my did it.

    I just got my first lithops, and I just realized that it doesn’t have the best roots but it’s still splitting, so now I have it in its own little pot and I’ve started watering it.. how often should you water it though? It’s potted in 75% perlite 25% cactus mix..

    justinemartello give it a week in its new pot and water lightly. Set the pot on top of some water so the new roots can grow towards the moisture.

    What do u feed them with? I bought that orange bottle that says succulent & cactus fertilizer I believe it’s by Miracle Grow. Is that fine? And how often do u feed them. Also I purchased 2 lithops from Lowe’s & 1 was already splitting & so seems to be doing well & the other just finished blooming & I can see the new leaves under it. Sorry this was so long. Thank u for doing these videos. Even though they are long, they are the most informative so I appreciate it. Thanks again for ur help 😊

    So much obvious the roots growing on the budy wont survive now that you say it. How many inches from the grow light do you put them? Do you take them outside in the summer?

  • @phileofarm1

    @phileofarm1

    6 жыл бұрын

    Lyse S, yes I do usually put them outside for the summer. Right now they are about 8” away from the grow lights. They do well with that distance with my light and they don’t stretch at all over the winter, but it really depends on the light how close they need to be. If I see them reaching at all I move it closer, but for the winter that seems to work for me! 💗
