Lithium Battery Failure // EPIC fail // Can the fix be that simple? // Fulltime RV
Over the past several years we have had multiple instances of our batteries having low voltage for a short period of time, but they always came back. This time we had to jump in and get it fixed which took several days. It was an interesting trip to Alabama with a 4-hour delay in the truck stop.

Get some heat shrink tube or tool dip to cover that ratchet handle. The connections and ribbon cables are sensitive to dust. You can get CO contact cleaner it helps. CO is Central Office like the main phone system for town. The older connectors would get a film on them and we used the pink erasers to clean the surface then the CO contact cleaner and they would be good as new. Be safe.

Thank you for your comment 😊 Volta makes a great plug-and-play product that is almost dummy proof to install, but for us we didn't want to pay twice the price for a third of the performance in a 25% larger in size. This was 4.5 years ago and they have since improved significantly but still not caught up with us yet. The company founders came from Johnson Automotive who I worked with in my working years and have a lot of respect for because of their design and quality criteria. For that reason we wanted real bad to make Volta work for us and had several conference calls with their engineering team but they were no where near what we needed. So we went with individual components for a hybrid system that meets our needs. Thru all this we've learned that it's not what system you go with but method in which it's installed that is critical for success.
Great channel! I heard about it in a Facebook post and spent the day binge watching your adventures. I am currently preparing a Volvo 780 for RV duty so it was great seeing what you guys have done. I am subscribed.

If only the company who installed the system would have told you about cleaning with alcohol on a regular. You can’t trust so many manufacturers. You would have been spared all that troubleshooting and having to go without electrical. That was something you shouldn’t have had to learn the hard way! Hi J&A 🙋🙋♀️. Thank you for your kind words. I do like to drive and have to work on backing up better. Our work experience has taught us cross-training is very important in being a successful team. We both have our strengths and duties but are there to support each others functions. Like on our first video where I'm trying to lift the ramp and drop it. David had surgery and I had to do his duties. I love my label maker and use it whenever I can. When we get around to doing the tour you might see lots of labels - like on the 3 compartment pull out laundry drawer. 🤩 Thanks for watching and your support! 🥰

Thanks for the comment 😊 Bumpy roads are no fun. We are retired and like to take it slow and easy. We set the cruise to 63mph or less depending on the speed limit (55mph in CA). We've been on some highways that even 35mph is too fast! 😵💫 So yes, the batteries should have a solid bracing system. Thanks!

David it's nice to have a technically minded wife to help with those big and little mechanical and technological problems that arise. Does she have a liked minded single sister? 😇 I'm almost 70 and single. I found using a stubby insulated rachet, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 inch drive and a small torque wrench, when working in tight spots with exposed electrical conductors helps prevent accidents. You guys rock! I only recently found your channel and I'm watching some of your older videos but anticipate the new releases. Thanks for sharing.

Not my favorite either...it freaks me out a little to be working around that stuff.
Couple of things guys. When working on electrical (like your batteries) always lift the ground / neg lead. That will open the frame? connection and the ratchet will not will not have a return path. Around the open side of the battery, I put soft plastic -- carpet runner cut to fit - you can see but not directly touch (or shake) something into the batteries - like that metal shelf unit. Lose all metal on your hands and arms. Rings, watches, anything that can hit the battery terminals. Safety glasses always, big pain, hot, dripping sweat (yes I hate when sweat pools on the glasses) but that spark is molten metal. NO pits in the eyes, that will ruin a day, week, month. Another useful tool is a FLIR attachment to the phone. They make one for both the Android and Iphone. I use mine with my tablet (daylight (1200 Nits) visual ability and larger screen) Heat shrink the handles of the ratchets, screw drivers, wrenchesso that if they contact anything, insulation barrier. Good catch on the board - many times just the unplug and replug is what does it but cleaning while out can't hurt. Shiny side up and safe travels.

@@bigtruckbigtravels FLIR basically shows a heat picture - color shaded - it can differentiate 0.1*F of temp and is overlaid on a somewhat definitive visual outline. I use it for all types of heat issues. Missing insulation, power cords (which blade of a extension cord is warm), pedestal cord, temps in the slip rings of the reel, battery jumpers, etc Remember Jack saying to tighten all your power lugs annually? This will allow you to scan your elec system in minutes and verify that it worked. It also works better with a 6' extension. Mine stuff - phone tablets etc are Android - so I use a USB-C male to female cord ext. Plugged directly into a device, you can't always get everything there and still see the screen. This is the model that I bought www.amazon.com/FLIR-One-Thermal-Imager-Android/dp/B0728C7KNC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3JVGCUQ61S2LM&keywords=flir%2Bthermal%2Bcamera%2Busb%2Bc&qid=1660486048&sprefix=flir%2Busb%2Bthermal%2Bcamera%2Caps%2C159&sr=8-1-spons&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18630bbb-fcbb-42f8-9767-857e17e03685&th=1

Hi Mike- yes, after this issue we were back to the manufacturer and they "anchored" the batteries (AGM and Lithium) to prevent movement. It was a first time install from nearly 4 years ago but it's been addressed. Thanks for the comment. 😊
I spent 25yrs in the Canadian navy as am electronic Technician. we had the same type of problem except ours was salt build up we had to clean and it was a pain the 1st time we ran across this problem I learned one thing in the Navy that is KISS keep it simple stupid and that saying reared its ugly head so often

I didn't think they would have needed white gloves to install the boards! Live and learn. Thanks for the comments. 😃
This whole situation is just wild to me. If I was you guys what needs to happen is you need to pull this whole battery bank out. Even these floating agm batteries. Give up little more space if you need to in another compartment and properly mount these lithium batteries in a aluminum frame that can be bolted tightly down to trailer same with your agms. Reason your having so much problems is vibration is loosening those connections cause nothing is bolted down. The fact that this company installed these packs without being mounted down right just blows my mind. Using little loctite on bus bar bolts for cells just should keep them from loosening.

You don't know the number of computers, your BMS, I have fixed by cleaning the boards. Vacuums, soft brushes, and an air compressor. The dust, dirt, and grease will short across pins which are carrying small amounts of current.

Thank you for your comment. 😊 When we were told cleaning the boards would fix the problem we thought that was crazy. We were wondering how that much dirt was getting into the compartment that could make that much of a difference. The amount of grime was random from board to board within the same pack so whoever put the boards on must have had grimy hands. We are adding board cleaning to our maintenance routine and it will be interesting to see if the grease free boards will now collect as much dirt. THANKS for confirming you've seen this problem so we know we aren't crazy 😜.
