btw. these small solar panels are only capable of 100-300 mA. It more for keeping a full charge when not in use as example: Your cars dashboard. there are better products but not bad for the price :)

Many KZreadrs got their Escobar phones though. They literally got $1,000 - $1,500 phones for cheap as they talked trash about the company on KZread. Only regular customers got duped.

The problem with solar powerbanks, aside from the tiny panels being practically useless, is that you're putting lithium batteries into extreme heat which is going to damage and limit their life. That's why it's better to buy a regular powerbank and a 10W USB solar panel / charger. Keep the battery in the shade 👍

Ah, okay. I was going to say that 6 to 8 hours for a 20,000 mAh battery isn't that bad. I bought some Netgear 20k battery and that thing gives me plenty of charges before recharging and AT LEAST 4 full 0 to 100% charges, so 6 to 8 hours seems fair. But as you mentioned, better to buy a 10w solar charger separately.

Well, there is no technology to detect your emotional state thorough a KZread video yet, so there is no way Ken can know what his viewers are actually feeling. His character seems to be optimistic (despite all the failures we see in his videos), which means he assumes you are doing great.

Thank you for calling lit mobile out on their crap. I got so annoyed with their commercials and their obvious lies about the solar. I work with solar at my job and have also been to schooling for it. Hearing their outrageous claims infuriated me because I knew there were people that couldn't see it for the lie it was. Thank you again, fantastic expose.

Yes,recharging 20000mah at 5v and 2A will take 10 hours in theory, no way it’s a 100W solar panel because that’s the only way you can do that so maybe it takes 20hours due to lots of inefficient steps

@@GrumpyIan Not all of them, there are real calculators that are actually solar powered. That said a calculator needs almost nothing (especially a poor one that can't get 1/3*3 right, let along the square root 2 test. Back of the napkin calculations given a solar cell powerbank size told me it was a clear false claim, I did that the first time I heard LitMobile's claim in advert.

What's concerning most about this is not that Lit Mobile is a scam, a quick browse of the internet shows that these kinds of companies are a dime a dozen. What's the most concerning is the fact that KZread allowed this company to advertise on their website. I'm already concerned about buying from any online retailer that I'm not familiar with, but I feel like KZread has put a great deal of mistrust on any of the advertisers no matter how honest and reputable they may be.

I find it bizarre that youtube will go to enormous lengths to ensure that the content on their platform is “advertiser friendly” yet have never considered the fact that if they don't curate their ads then it makes all of the ads on their platform seen untrustworthy. Back in the day on TV the cost of advertising at least had some sort of curating effect.

FYI: According to wikipedia, the highest possible solar irradiance is approx. 1000W/m^2. The device itself is 2.7 by 5.7 inches; for us SI users; 6.9 by 14.5 cm. This means the area of the solar panel (being VERY generous) is 100 cm^2 or 0.01m^2. This means that, given a perfect solar panel, that can convert ALL solar energy to usable power, a device of this size will produce a max of 10w AT BEST. A liion battery has a nominal voltage of 3.7 Volts. At the stated 20.000mAh, which is equal to 20Ah, this gives 20*3.7 = 74Wh. In order to generate 74 watt hours@10watts, this will take 74/10 = 7.4 hours AT LEAST. Looking a bit further, the most efficient solar panels ever will have an efficiency of 45%, while consumer units will lie in the 15-25% range. Let's give this thing the benefit of the doubt; let's say it's 50% efficient. This means it'll take 15 hours to charge this thing with solar power. The 1 hour charge time, even in optimal conditions here on earth, is plain impossible. Just to give a figure of how ridiculous this claim actually is; at the top of earth's atmosphere, solar irradiance is 1360 w/m^2. (in near earth orbit, this thing would take 5.4 hours to charge @ 100% efficiency) This would mean that, if it were 100% efficient, it could onlyu fullfill its promise, if you'd put it in the same orbit as mercury...

I made a similar estimate. But you know a solar powerbank has an actual usecase that i deem marketable without lies. The battery gradually bleeds off charge, not just by itself, it also needs to support the circuitry in the power bank with quiescent current, and you never know when you need your power bank, and by the time you need it months after you last topped it up, it might be kinda flat-ish. If they made one that can tie to the back of your backpack nicely, and was well protected against elements and impact and abuse, then no matter how much time has passed since you last topped it up, it's still going to be full! Isn't that nice? And if all you top up are your wireless earbuds and occasional very moderate phone boosts, you may never actually need to charge it at home. I think you can expect the power bank to lose 5-20% charge per month. Let's say the expected output power of the solar cell is just 0.75W (bad weather, bad orientation, low efficiency, etc), then if you irradiate it for 1 hour every day, you restore 1% charge per day, and 30% charge per month. Isn't this just about perfect?

@@SianaGearz I have a solar charging battery bank, and while I definitely don't use the solar charging as its main way of using it, I do really like the solar charging. I hike and spend quite a bit of time out in nature, and having that solar charger with the led lamp in the back means that I can always get from about 8 hours of charging just enough battery for one or two phone calls, or light when it gets dark. It's a really good emergency backup, but can in no situation replace the main method of charging.

Thanks for the calculation, very interesting. I bought one of the power banks from 'Lit Solar' (other brand Lit Mobile are using) and recently got the charge refunded back to my card as no suprises, it didn't arrive. I did have some warning signs in the back of my mind that it would be too good to be true, but it was the fact the ad came through KZread, a legitimate platform, the variety of positive reviews and 60% 'discount' that convinced me to take a chance and buy. There were hundreds of 4 & 5 star reviews on the website, many of which had the product in different situations and at different angles so I was thinking, that's a lot of effort to fake that and if it is a scam they will get shut down fairly quickly but I guess it was still worth it to them. Also the fact that reviews could only be read, not written should've deterred me. What I don't know is if it was a company actually trying to do what they could to produce/source a good solar charging product then realised the best they could do was drop ship a cheap OEM and inflate the specs, and whether they deliberately tried to exit scam at that point using the promotional material and infrastructure they'd created or were hoping to get some money from orders to fund sourcing a decent product. All in all, I've learnt to be more careful next time when buying something from an unknown brand. Regarding the OEM product itself, I would've accepted slow solar charging if it was good in all other regards, didn't know the exact figures til your calculation but I was aware a panel that size wouldn't charge the bank quickly at all. But it could still be useful as an emergency backup, i.e. using your example of 50% efficient panel my phone, a Note 10+ would get 1 hour of 3G talktime from 6 mins of solar charging. Using GSMArena specs of about 32 hours 3G talktime from a full 4200mAh battery. So if there was a urgent need to make a call, or look something up online and both my phone battery and bank were dead the solar charging could be a very useful emergency backup and it wouldn't take long to get enough juice for a shorter, less demanding task - but of course could never be relied upon as the main source of re-charging the bank. What I do find odd is why it won't go above the 25% light with solar charging - I don't know how they've setup the thresholds on the lights, with Ken assuming it to be 25-49% but maybe it's the other end of the scale, lighting up with any charge level up to 25%. Which would be a bit cheeky as that would suggest if all the lights follow the same logic the 100% light would come on with 76 - 100% charge but that could be exactly how they want it, to make it look like it charges quicker. I don't know, but it would've been interesting if Ken had tried charging an empty device of 5000 mAh to see if the solar charging genuinely had done at least 25%.

@@TheNugettinage I meant in particular a solar bank that is not used in burst solar charge situations, but which is constantly worn on your body so every time you walk somewhere, it gets a wee little boost. I don't think enough attention has been paid to make the solar power bank always-wearable. And the back side of the backpack that you wear every day in the city is a convenient spot.

Are the charging problem of only max 25~49% due to voltage limitations of the solar cell, as far I( a layman) know to charge something you require a min voltage and anything below that wouldn't charge the battery but might even drain it, the solar cell might just be producing enough potential difference to charge it to 25%.

Instagram as well. and i have seen ads advertising sweet ass leather jackets, or solid gold suits... on fake scam websites selling them at a fraction of what they actually sell for. The shitty part is i actually wanted to buy those things, even before i knew what the price was, they looked friggin sweet. I usually NEVER click on ads. I ended up going on alibaba later and buying something similar from someone i knew was making cheap crap but definitely not trying to scam me, just like Ken did. So i do have a solid gold suit now, its super plasticky and its way too small but it is still stupidly awesome. Instagram is responsible for the scams that use their platform to advertise. they are complicit in people being ripped off.

I got robbed for 2 of these things! I was in a hurry, not paying attention, thought they would make a nice gift, didn't read any comments. And I ordered mine long after people were complaining about being robbed. KZread was still running the ad in spite of it!

I'm willing to bet that the range for the 25% indicator is actually 1-25%, as 25-49% would result in the 100% indicator only lighting up at *exactly* 100%.

Yeah, they got me too. Ordered 5/26, now 7/15/20, still nothing. Glad you did a vid on this. I gave the benefit of the doubt too. 100% scam. And, after seeing your review I don't care anyways. They can keep it. I am curious though, with all the people blatantly getting debited for a product that is never delivered..can't the defrauded customers file a lawsuit against Lit?

The problem would be that it's not a US company (a .us domain can be acquired by anyone as you don't have to prove you're in the US). Most lawyers would simply shrug and say that it's not worth it to try and collect as even if you got a court to side with the plantiffs in the suit, there'd be nothing to collect as it's foreign which they have no jurisdiction over. The plantiffs would then have to take the US-based court judgement, hire lawyers in China, and file motions in the Chinese courts, and hope that the courts side with them to allow collections to proceed on the original balance (what was paid for the courts and lawyers in China would not be included, nor any interest or court/lawyer fees from the US-based suit). So even if they got some of their money back in the process, it would be swallowed up by legal bills, which is why lawyers will just tell folks to suck it up as a (hopefully) lesson learned.

This saga has been nothing but an emotional rollercoaster. Great job man!

I have an older "solar power bank" I bought a few years ago to throw in my emergency preparedness bag. It's much smaller, has only two 5W USB-A ports (and the USB-micro charge port.) and no Qi pad. But it's supposedly "rugged" and waterproof, and has a solar panel! Perfect for emergencies (or so I thought.) And much like yours - the solar panel is effectively useless. Can only charge up enough to make the first LED light up (similar 4-LEDs for status,) and takes a day in direct sunlight to get that far. Left it out a full week in "light clouds" and didn't even light up the first LED. You just need a much bigger solar panel to provide enough juice to actually power up any of these. (I bought a "fold-up solar panel" to charge my powerbanks from.)

That's mostly because the little solar panel has to be able to provide adequate current and keep a steady voltage which has to be well above the battery's nominal voltage at that current output.

maybe its a safety thing? much safer to let it only go to 25% charge. still on my 8000mah bank maybe the same it IS waterproof for fun i dropped it in the swimming pool a few times. let it dry a bit and it would charge my phone quite a bit like 45% on a ''full solar charge'' i also use it at work i just lay it outside and 30 mins u get 20% phone battery on my a30

I have seen/used working solar chargers but they have flaps so it’s like 3 to 4x the amount of solar cells, plus I’m sure it was more expansive solar cells, the cheap power banks probably used the lowest quality solar cells which are pretty inefficient.

Send it to Big Clive so he can test the real capacity and charge rates from the ports!

I remember my reaction to the outrageous claims those adds made. You have satisfied my curiosity in the qualities of the product. I'm actually a little surprised it's as useful as it is.

2:49 ahh that old youtube icon also yes the iPhone prevents it from hitting 100% its also a common feature of devices these days, infact the iPhone will give prompts about it if its part of your routine etc. but yeah charging to 100% then letting itself drain to 95/98/92% are common things laptops and such do. helps preserve the batteries lifespan

My note ten gets to 100 wirelessly... Why?

A few years ago I ran an experiment where I charged all of my devices purely off of solar power for a few weeks. Two important things to keep in mind with these solar powered chargers: 1. The angle that you set it relative to the sun is *critical*. You need the panel to be 90° from the sun’s rays. Power output drops *dramatically* if sunlight doesn’t hit it directly. I had to adjust the panel I was using every hour or two. 2. Heat will destroy the batteries in these, and even if they aren’t destroyed their effectiveness is greatly diminished. If you’re serious about powering your gadgets with solar, you either need to live at a high altitude (lots of sun and cool temperatures) or buy a battery and a stand-alone charger. The standalone charger panels are much bigger than the built-in panels, and you can hide the battery in the shade of the charger.

I have a 26000 bank with four panels @18w and to takes a good day to 2 days in the Cali sun to fully charge if there aren't any clouds. So yeah the claims that one solar cell with charge it that fast are very false... However if you left it out for 4-5 days it might fully charge. I love having our in case of emergencies, especially during fire season which is basically April to November for us.

I have a 10W 5-panel solar charger without a battery pack, meaning I can use my own battery packs and bring them with me in my pocket without the whole solar rig attached. Costs around $20 on eBay and there are a lot of them for sale. The actual measured output on mine is 5V 1.5A in direct sunlight, which is 7,5W. I didn't expect it to be that good honestly.

If you're really interested about what's going on inside, you should send this to Big Clive and have him "take it to bits" :)

I've done some calculations and even under ideal conditions ie miday at the equator under blue sky. This power bank would take 15 hours to fully charge. I suspect the 25% indicator activates far below 25% to make people believe that it is doing something.

Pretty sure he's misinterpreting what the lights mean. Because since it also has a 100% light, the 25% light means 0-25% NOT 25-49% as he seems to think (since by that logic the 100% light would mean 100-124% which makes no sense). 26-50% would be the 50% light.

Thanks for your great videos. Wish I'd seen these a couple months ago before ordering a few power banks from the site. Saw the online ads (on KZread; can't they do something about BS like this?) and it looked good. Anyway, I almost forgot about them and was wondering where the hell they were. Guess now I'll have to demand a refund and resort to legal action to get it.

Remember when they changed it to "patriot" something for the 4th of July? They pretended it was a different company.

This whole Lit Mobile debacle is what attracted me to your channel. I love the kind of content you make. Thanks for the distraction from all the morons and just down right despicable people(like whom ever owns Lit Mobile) that just make life pointless sometimes. Lol

Certainly. Good idea.

That's why we were all saying that you should just charge-back before it is too late, as Lit Mobile is never going to send you a unit. They're intention is just to pocket the funds and hope folks wait until after it's too late to initiate a charge-back (typically 60-90 days after the transaction was done).

Thanks Ken for making this series. It's really great to see an honest, open review of something to get a much better feel and idea of what it's really about. It's interesting that as a power bank/wireless charger, it works rather well. It would be interesting though to see what the actual charging rate/output of those solar cells is, as it could be used to determine just how much of a charge/usage you can expect from it.

When I first saw a lit mobile ad I was impressed about it being able to charge solar style and having 20,000 mAh battery but i knew in the back of my head that they were full of bull

Well... Thank you for this dive down the rabbit hole that is Lit Mobile. My Nine-year-old son saw these commercials and was begging me for one of these because we camp. I told him I would look into it and then found you. I thought these things looked a little too good to be true when he showed me the add, and you have saved me some money by doing the gunt work for me. My son, on the other hand, is not happy. :-) Thanks again... You have a new subscriber in me.

I had one very much like that. Used it for a week while at my son's Cub Scout Jamboree. Even at 25% it kept my phone and a couple other ones going.

Hello #KrazyKen. I did the same as you, I went and bought the Lit Solar. But, I bought it two different times, I guess I am a gambler... It did look so promising! Waited a good while and then gave up and requested my money back from my credit card company. Then, I went and bought one from Amazon. Almost identical to the Lit Solar. I did receive the device, pretty happy with it, and it is branded BLavor. At least, I got it, it works, and does what I wanted it to do. I paid $ 79.00 in CAD so not bad including the shipping cost that was passed on to me. Was very happy to hit on your show. I have subscribed, you sound like a great person to get help from. Thank you...

I saw an ad for a square shaped pillow in the similar style of lit mobile. You might want to look at that next.

Some of us haven't gotten rain in weeks even months yet other parts of the world like China it hasn't stopped raining in 47 days and even Wuhan is flooded.

I'm one of those suckers who bought a $40 litmobil back in November 2019, from a KZread ad. Unlike apparently a lot of people, I was lucky enough to get my product, pretty fast, and the thing works. I don't take it into the desert or anything, but just keep it by my bed side where I like to wirelessly charge my phone, and once in a rare while I use the light. It works. However, the solar doesn't seem to charge it very much, if at all, and I feel like an idiot for not shopping around and finding the $20 version. Oh well. Thanks for your review and this explains why their website is gone. They're on to the next grift, probably something involving crypto currency.

Do you expect this tiny 2.5/5w solar panel to charge this power bank :D? No! Even with a 20/30w solar panel it would take like 2-3days.

I am so happy I did not have this same experience. I received all of them. I like mine and everyone I gave them as gifts like them too. I also have the Patriot models and another model I bought on Amazon, they all claim more than what they actually do but they do work. It’s a bit heavy though compared to the Patriot and the FEELLE models that I have. I have a lot of solar products and did not believe it would charge via the sun quickly. I use mine fully charged by my pool and keep my phone and blue tooth speaker topped off and have had no issues. The battery stays fully charged in peak sunlight.

I was sure I'd subbed after the first videos on this product... All this really makes me wonder about the site I got my magnetic charging cable from as I don't think the ever replied to my e-mail questioning their sporadic prices on the site...

I checked out the product on the Shenzhen Juding Technology Co website. All THEY say is it CAN be charged by solar. A (positive) verified purchase review suggests that it will take a couple of days in the sun to charge and even then it does not say it will charge to 100%, nor does it say where it the USA it was put out in the sun (2 days of 16 hours per day of continuous bright sunlight perhaps?). That said a 20Ah [20,000mAh = 20Ah] USB power brick for that price is not a bad product (for the price the original manufacturer sells it for). Thanks for the videos, it has been interesting following this saga, even if we all had a pretty good idea of what the outcome would be. [Liked and subscribed]

With proper RnD this product could be a good thing, to be honest the sun beams down a year of world energy in a day? And we waste it.

@@ben-tw9yg there is probably a simple reason it doesn't charge past the quarter mark, and it's probably related to shitty circuit design.

I recall reading a listing on a similar solar power bank some time ago. Initially I thought this would be something I was interested in until I read a footnote stating that the power pack would not charge above 20-25% via solar for safety reasons. Thinking about it, the idea of lithium power cells, a dark case and sitting in the direct sunlight during a hot day or on a car dashboard can be a fire risk. Especially so if you're near a full charge with a 20,000 mAh battery pack.

Ken, I absolutely LOVE your videos!!! You’re the best consumer product advocate I’ve seen since the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when David Horowitz used to run a very similar show on TV. Please keep making more videos. You are REALLY helping the lone consumer in a day and age where it has never been more needed! You’re a true American hero!

I ordered the USB C one in November 2019 and loved it (yes, we did actually get it and fairly quick too but certainly didn't pay full price). Of course the solar didn't work like it was supposed to but we expected that...loved the wireless charging feature the most. Liked it so much we ordered another along with one of their solar panels too in March 2020. BUT that's where I had issues since they shipped me 2 solar panels instead of the charger..and it was even on the packing slip that way. I sent multiple emails with no response (or I got the generic one), which I then forwarded to every email address they listed. Also tried the number and got the same response..so I finally filed a claim with my credit card. Lit Mobile actually contested the claim and sent a response to my credit card (I was surprised they actually responded)!!! So I had to file a rebuttal to my claim. I did get my money refunded completely after a couple months..and I was actually gonna order another until I found the website no longer existed..and I found your videos..WOW!!! I guess we got lucky!!!

A similar photovoltaic cell with only 1/5 of that surface, dried out in the garden for the entire day, only managed to lit up a single LED for only 6-7 hours.

What was the rated capacity of the cell? Also, what's the efficiency of the charging circuit? I've heard that some battery banks can have an efficiency as low as 70%.

I found a very similar looking power bank that was about half as thick and about an inch shorter for $3 at a goodwill. I just leave it on the dash in my car, and grab it if I think I may need a power bank, but it always seems to be stuck at charging the last bar but not finished.
