Franz Liszt orchestrated his famous Mephisto Waltz No. 1 for Piano, S. 514, as part of the set "2 Episodes from Lenau's Faust", S. 110, in 1861. The complete orchestral work consists of two tone-poems based on Episodes 11 and 6 of Lenau's Faust: "Der nächtliche Zug" (The Nightly Train), and "Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke" (The Dance in the Village Inn). Liszt dedicated these episodes to his student Carl Tausig.

This is Liszt at his best. The transcription is a work of genius and brings out the logic of the piano original through very effective and nuanced orchestration.

He actually didn't. This is Busoni's Arrangement transcribed for orchestra. Listen to Busoni's piano version

@@Damian_Theodoridis I thought Busoni just made his own solo piano version that was more loyal to the orchestral version than Liszt’s solo piano version was.

@@Damian_Theodoridis No you‘re wrong my friend. Liszt wrote the orchestral version first, then made a piano version. Busoni made piano transcription of the orchestral version (Liszt technically didn‘t do a transcription, but more a translation instead)

No. According to Howard: "The Zwei Episoden aus Lenaus Faust (‘Two Episodes from Lenau’s Faust’) for orchestra were completed by 1861, but Liszt’s piano version of Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke-[Erster] Mephisto-Walzer (‘Dance in the Village Inn-[First] Mephisto Waltz’), which preceded the orchestral version, had already appeared."

2:55 must be tricky to play on the strings due to the lack of open strings I believe.

The 1st violins on that part are marked divisi, not to be played as double stops, if that's what you mean
