LISTENING to the QUANTUM REALM | SOUND of SHOT NOISE

Ғылым және технология

In this video I'll be showing you what quantum noise sounds like using household items!

HI, I'M NUTSINEE.
I'm a final year physics PhD student at The Australian National University. I make videos about PhD tips & tricks and sometimes random bits and pieces of my poor ass grad student's life. My thesis involves building a squeezed light system at the LIGO Hanford site and developing squeezed light technology for the future generations ground-based gravitational-wave detectors.

I love your channel Nutsinee! I saw the PBS spacetime video on squeezed states earlier today. Have you ever considered making an intro explanation video about how that system works on the experimental side? I tried reading some articles and a paper about the LIGO setup but I had trouble understanding what physically was happening and what components and optics actually go into it.

Thank you! If you don't understand squeezing you are not alone. Lol. Neither do I. Wait til I finish writing my thesis. Maybe after that I'll understand enough to make a video about it.

Hi NUTSINEE, i am going to use the same sensor to detect fast processes like triboluminescence but I think sensor might be ultra fast but its sensitivity is very very low. I connected a 50 Ohm cable. and if i remove the lit is doesent even detect fluorescent light from the office. I have an offset of -10 mV. And I am using a PicoScope USB Oscilliscope. When I put a 3W LED with white light directly on the sensor it shows only 2V.. and it theoretically can go up to 5V @50Ohm resistance. Am I doing something wrong? Or does the ultra fast responsiveness come with low sensibility?

Is the frequency of sound wave equal to frequency of photon being emitted by flashlight/diode? If yes then is it possible to calculate no.of photons emitted by flashlight per second.

Cool stuff. I always wanted to borrow from the lab but was too scare to drop as much stuff at home as in the lab. In the lab it's a work accident... and at home... well.... How do you know its shot noise and not e.g. intensity noise without using 2 diodes illuminated by the same source (e.g. laser) and subtract all the common (e.g. intensity) noise.

Guess you'll have to measure it to be sure. Not sure how you do it with an incoherent light source though. If the power hitting the diode is known then shot noise can be calculated. It is what I imagined what shot noise would sound like and it's just a pub quality demo 😂

Hi Nutsinee! Sorry if this is a stupid question. Do you think the chance of getting a PhD scholarship in Australia in Engineering depends on the field that we study? Between electrical engineering and telecommunication engineering, studying which field do you think gives the highest chance of getting a PhD scholarship in Australia?

Cool... you made an optical amplifier. I just learned today we are being moved around by quantum fluctuations. That's how I got here lol. I think this means games could be won by "spooky" quantum behaviors... Nutsinee do you agree?
