Same here. I have been a fan for 23 years, and it always takes me a good 3-4 listens to learn to love each song. This one was no different - I was “meh” on it the first listen, and now I’m really liking it after about 10

I just saw Jordan last weekend for his touring show. Super interesting, fun and informative. I’d highly recommend catching the guys whenever they do their solo ventures and whenever you can. Really cool to just sit and feel like you’re having a chat with them. He had a guessing game for one of DT’s tracks by playing two chords and my brother (massive fan) called it immediately and he was impressed haha. Really cool and down to earth guy!

Easily Manginis best performance since he joined the band... 10 YEARS ago! And also Petruccis lead tone is not of this earth. Sweet mother of god. This song is the best I´ve heard from DT in many years, I´m so happy!

I really like DreamTheater and have litened hundreds of hours of it probably. This Song is very very odd for me. Incredibly technical even for Dream Theater.. buuuut it lacks something. This Song sounds like a DT Medley, it has everything in it that makes a good DT Song but it sounds like pieces of other Songs mixed together. All my favorite DT Songs have something that is instantly recognizable in them and DT to me is like...every record is an Era with a somewhat unique sound and style. and this just..would fit on every previous album. Some of my favorites from different "eras" would be: Octavarium, In the Name of God, Home, Take the Time, Fall Into the Light. And if you listen to them you will definetly know what i mean. Each of them has something that stands out. So.. The Alien, very good Song!..but i dont feel it if you get what i mean :)

I think you nailed this one pretty accurately. It definitely takes a little effort to appreciate Dream Theater…and it’s well worth it. My first listen, I felt underwhelmed. Now? I absolutely love this piece. Also, you correctly recognized that most DT songs in the past dozen years could be interchangeable on most of their albums, not pushing any real boundaries. What I love about this album, as compared to most others, is that each song is heavy with progressive elements. Nothing traditional. After many, many listens, AVFTTOTW is perhaps my favorite of the Mangini era. It’s pure genius!

You are absolutely right when you say that Dream Theater takes a few listens to really "understand" the whole song. And it's been like that for a few years now. There's a lot going on to the point that you can not take it all in on your first time. And because of that, it may not be "a banger" right away, but it grows on you over time... already listened to it about 5 times and still find myself finding new things...

Wish DT would tangent from the signature sound they have going now. But, I'll take it. When you say 'couldn't be anyone else other than DT' is it because of Jame's vocal tone? The band's tone is and has been reproduced. Check out the band Pyramid Theorem's release Beyond the Exosphere. That being said, DT is coming to my town in November and will probably be going to see them again. Nice review Jim... keep it up. Be safe.

I am glad, that I didn't write, before you were finished, because you almost expressed exactly my thoughts. I was going to write, that to me, knowing each single DT song of their career, The Alien has 80% of elements, that I've heard before, and maybe 20% are new. I can imagine, that someone, who hears DT for the very first time, this may sound great, awesome, incomparable. But for longtime DT fans this is quality, but nothing really new.🤘 At least they put it together in a way, that it is not boring ... like the new Metallica, their stealing of own music is too obvious 🤔😒

Not mine at all. Dream Theater stopped releasing decent complete albums right after 6doit. I liked a few songs after, but none of the albums really grabbed me like Awake, SFAM or images and words did. After Portnoy left, though,, it became even more obvious that not much is coming from what once was my favorite band in the whole world.

Maybe I need more listens but to me it was pretty generic for them. They used to have a lot more hooks and dynamics. They over process Jame's voice so much now - and I am not talking about the deliberate attempt for perhaps a science-fiction/alien effect. That and he doesn't have the ability to sing 3/4 of their songs properly live any more.

I struggle a bit with Dream Theater. I like them but never get over excited by their stuff. I was loving the intro to this but once the vocals came in i just lost interest. Musically brilliant but as per your comments, a bit predictable and nothing i've not heard from them before. This is another DT album i think i'll pass on.

  • @Heatwave9000

I can hear pettrucci trying to be innovative in his solos but the band as a whole is starting to sound like classic DT on every new album which is why I know longer consider them as progressive metal. Difficult for bands who've been around this long to go away from their signature sound because that's what their fans like to hear. I think if you've only heard a few DT songs you'd think this track is excellant but perhaps not if you've listened to a lot of their discography. The album has by far the clearest mix of any dream theater album and Mangini no longer sounds like a drum machine.

Boring, recurent musical ideas, nothing memorable. This song is the same song they keep wrinting from the moment he left.
