i love it when a straight man gets slowly more flambéing through the vid
I love when straight men jam out to femininomenon cuz its about them not being able to make girls finish 😂

Haha... yeah. This got me just now to go back over to the next Midwest Princess reaction vid I just commented on, and grab that comment. Here it is (it's long): About "Make it hot like Papa John" : From first hearing and instantly loving Femininomenon in March 2024, through seeing Chapell live in May, and having obsessed over and listened to the entire album maybe 70 times by now, I had come to accept that the above line was there (1) merely to indicate hotness, and (2) that a pizza carryout franchise name was used for the simile just because you want pizza hot and that company's name is bouncy. Only hours ago I read in a comment to another reactor's video an elaboration on that explanation. I realized, damn, that's right... and I'm glad the comment was a female's. Her interpretation finally solves this lyric fully for me. The carryout/delivery pizza simile was used because such businesses put a hot pizza into a box, and it makes the pizza box hot! Chappell's issue in this song is why TF are men, in her experience, so worthless at making HER box hot? That was a slap-my-forehead moment. What a great lyric, that I hadn't figured it out in many listens over four months, and what she'd done was sitting right there the whole time ready to be deciphered. Several days ago in a different reactor's comments I'd seen a similar illumination of the same song's two interruptions by Chappell's frustrated complaints, "Did you hear me, can you play a fucking beat?!" Those disruptions are surprises and great fun, but they too are more. They're complaints about male incompetence again! Whatever men have applied to her "there," be it the male's hand or whatever other part of him, guys simply haven't been committed enough, generous enough, or skilled enough to get her off. Weren't able, or just weren't willing, to provide the right beat long enough to get the job done. The whole song serves the same message of, screw it, guys are hopeless. This needs to be done for girls by other girls. It needs to be a femininomenon. I'm a straight male so I'm not necessarily agreeing with all that, but that's irrelevant. It's a thrilling, masterfully written and performed song, and Chappell's whole album is just stunning, a masterpiece.

Hey, why would we know more than someone who actually has the same genitalia? So yeah, you're right. So there.
You're straight male young into hiphop and this album blew you away. I'm straight male old into my beloved rocknroll and this album blew me away. It is IMO, no shit, one of the best debut albums I've heard by any singer-songwriter, in any genre, ever. I even hopped on out and saw her perform the whole thing live... between such other recent concerts as Neil Young, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Joss Stone, The Feelies, Buddy Guy, Richard Thompson... y'all have probably never heard of those last few but no matter. My point is that this album, albeit of this era, is going to transcend time. It's a classic. It's gonna be played forever.

My friend, I couldn't agree more! I'm male, straight, 49 years old, and was absolutely blown away by this young woman. What a voice!! So much so my wife and I also have seen her twice now and had the time of our lives! The crowd was SO much fun and I think got a kick out of me and my wife being there down in the pit singing our hearts out.❤ Totally agree this album will transcend time!

I think Chappell is writing from a personal place, but also trying to motivate listeners (especially in the Midwest/South) to explore and embrace their queerness. Her songs showcase that tipping point, especially Femininomenon, Red Wine, After Midnight, Super Modern, Pink Pony Club, Naked, Guilty Pleasure and Good Luck Babe.
I think a little context you're missing for California is that she wrote the song after she had been dropped from her previous record label (Atlantic 👀) after she released Pink Pony Club. She stopped doing music for like, 2 years after that and was working at her local coffee shop, until she decided to give it one last shot.
@valbarnsview

@@valbarnsview She's 26, she self published a cd, Kayleigh Rose, at 15. Was putting it online at 16. Got signed by Atlantic at 17. The put out her EP School Nights at... 18? But none of it "hit." It's gloomy, sad girl stuff. Dark. She also got diagosed as bipolar in... 2020? And began addressing that, which I think was probably a big factor in what was a radical shift in direction, tone, and, later, success. Pink Pony Club, in 2020, didn't sell and Atlantic dropped her. Oct 2020, the same week her bf dumped her and through her stuff out of the apt. She did leave Cali then, went home to Willard MO. But only briefly stopped working on songs. Dan Nigro, having big success with Olivia, didn't forget about Chappell and kept encouraging her and working with her. Finally, last summer, they finished the album. And both knew they had something great on their hands. They negotiated from a position of strength with record labels, and got what they wanted from Island. It's a great saga.
I just love queer straight men. I mean that in the most respectful and positive way ever. Like Ryan Reynolds or Air Bud. Lol

I knew your reaction would be fun after seeing that you react to Charli. I wish straight men could understand casual and see it more then just a “freaky” song☹️
@valbarnsview
15 күн бұрын
idk if i mentioned for casual or another song but she did have the theme of presenting a very graphic sexual image juxtaposed with very personal lyrics about her personal struggles and insecurities. Sorry if that didn’t come through very well in the video sometimes if i say it once i feel like it would be redundant to rephrase for another song down the line so i just leave it as implied. I need to get better at that though. Also this is just my first listen the more i listen i’ll understand the more intricate parts of the music with time :) It’s definitely not just a freaky song tho to sum all this yap up

comparing her to Charli makes no sense 😂 very weird to hear someone say that. The only similarity is they're both women. The music couldn't be more different. i like both but they're doing completely different genres. 😅
@crstph

idk i think its a perfectly reasonable comparison. they both value campy performance and intense, interesting instrumentation-of course they’re very different, but i can see why it would be an accessible comparison in some aspects for someone whos a fan of charli. especially femininomenon
@valbarnsview
15 күн бұрын
Yeah that’s the majority of what i was getting at, i’m also not very well versed in pop in general where ik charli is more electronic/experimental but from what ive listend to it was the closest comparison. My world rn is basically Taylor, billie, then charli. From the perspective of having the album sit for a week tho Chappell is definitely doing her own thing but i feel there is still breadcrumbs of inspiration from charli. Also boiling them down to “your saying this cus they’re both women” is a lil weird to me. Both have aspects of electronic pop music that are made extremely well while still being seperate artists and insanely talented in their own ways

For Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl Chappell felt like they weren't getting it quite right and she figured Charli XCX's producer was the guy who could fix it. They called him in. And he did.
