Listen this way -- music, mystery, and meditation | Ben Sung | TEDxFargo

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Violinist Benjamin Sung is Assistant Professor of Violin at Florida State University, a faculty artist at the Brevard Music Center, and concertmaster of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. Ben takes a short tour through his own mind to look at the inner workings of a piece of music in the moment of performance, drawing the listener closer to the mysterious spiritual center of music.
Assistant Professor of Violin at Florida State University, violinist Benjamin Sung is also concertmaster of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, a faculty member of the Brevard Music Center, and a roster artist for Florida Arts on Tour. Ben is an enthusiastic advocate of contemporary music and has worked with many of the greatest composers of this generation.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Too often I hear violinist play this too fast, in my estimation. I hear it with a slower meditative tempo when I play it. How lovely to hear it played this way and to hear the thought that went into it. I love this.

entertainment is a desired effect of performance arts but not the primary goal, and that the primary goal is to transport the individual in the audience into another parallel reality, full of wonder, where he experiences the essence of his own consciousness, and reflects on spiritual and moral questions. - Natya Shastra

Violin grates on my nerves. Viola sounds so much better, and Cello can be magical. I realize it is individual preference...just my 2 cents.

I am sorry but the violin and the piano do not speak to my soul. It's not flowing enough. The piano pounds from one note to another and the violin is to high in it's sound most of the time. It squeaks to much. This pounding and squeaking breaks the meditative state. But meditationing to Native American flute music is perfect. That always speaks to my soul. That being said, I feel there is a difference between meditation and getting lost in some beautiful music. This is just my opinion.

very nice you said that music takes you to high spheres...where the mysteries of creation live... very good intention benjamin but talking too much... doesn´t help...analizing too much either...jokes less...too much forced applause even less...never ask for applause even if for another musician let it come naturally you play very nice, just please let silence and and the muse talk more
