It's not hard or complex. Your point is based entirely on a sunken cost fallacy (the sunken cost in question is less than 1.5 minutes of time played).

If they so bad wanted to make liverpool lose that they'd not give a goal which they knew ought to have been awarded- they should not only lose their jobs, but F.A. should be held accountable too. cowards can always take the easy way out and "blame the system". sometimes doing something "right" can be "illegal". "They can't go back" is the official guideline - but that would assume the process up to that point had no mistakes, once a mistake had happened, the official guideline SHOULD HAVE BEEN IGNORED and "proper protocol" SHOULD HAVE BEEN BROKEN.

As a 40 year United fan I love to see Liverpool lose but only when its losing fairly, but thats part of the rivalry. With that rivalry also comes respect. This debacle of a situation goes beyond fan rivalry and nobody wants to see teams getting shafted by the officials in this shambolic way. I feel sorry for the Liverpool players, staff and supporters. All fans should stand united against VAR!

IN Australian Rules Football we have Very Specific words and phrases about rules, firstly we are taught to never ever say 'HE', 'They, them, or what ever, it's always the rule broken First - It's a push in the back, It's a hold, A throw, not in possession, it's the Rule first last and always, - SO clearly the replay stuff is in a mess and needs clarification, the people talking over each other and the onfield ref not being made to 'wait', 'Hold' Play, is BS. We now have 'score' reviews in our major games that seem to drag on forever as they review every nuance of it, it's becoming a farce, a balance needs to be reached to stop these absolute 'clangers' of decisions.

Asisstant reff no.2 raised the flag up 3.he said again ”just checking the offside,delay delay” 4.”check complete check complete thats fine,perfect” In my opinion He clearly went with the on field decision even he knew it wasnt true. When the replay operator said it was onside and told him Oli’s instruction to delay the game..he (darren) ignored it for few seconds and bought time to respond so that the decision cant be overturn because the game has already restarted.

Everyone in the VAR room talking over each other. There needs to be air traffic control protocol in there. Clear language to be used, one person talking at a time and handing off before the next one speaks.

The replay operator was the only competent person in that room.

In the NHL, the ref is asked by the video ref: What is your decision? He answers and then it is under review. Video provided on a tablet for the Ref on the ice. There are 2 people talking - not 3 or 4. 30 - 60 seconds at the most pass until the decision is fixed. Then the decision is announced over the Stadium speakers and the clip is shown for all on the videowall. Works. And in soccer, they make a rocket science out of it with offside running on, etc.

How do they not know the on field decision, absolutely crazy how vague there communication was?

The fact it took the VAR so long to even realise his own mistake just shows how much attention he was paying to the game.

The panic in that "what" at 1:02 is extremely relatable whenever any of us have horrifically misunderstood something.

So in a nutshell: VAR: "Possible offside, checking the offside. Great, perfect, go on." Replay operator: "The image was onside, the on-field decision was offside". VAR: "What offside?"

nah mate, u can tell they were rushing it so as to not spoil the flow of the game. If u watched it carefully they were already ready to do the VAR check when the sequence of play started and the linesman is telling them he's delaying. But I think they were over zealous overall trying to finish the check as soon as possible

They thought they were checking if the goal was offside, which is clearly the opposite. Just a lack focus really, but it will go unpunished in this line of work,oh and lack of communication too

Exactly. In a two way radio, one side talks while the other listens. Sentences from each side end with ' over ' so each side knows when to respond. And ' out' to conclude communication. Simple protocol to avoid confusion.

Can't believe there's not a simple, unambiguous communication protocol in place between officials. Howard Webb has been telling the world these human VARs had gone through many hours of training and seminars. And this is the end product we witnessed with our ears? The most popular league in the, a prime time game watched by hundreds of millions around the world, only to show what a joke PGMOL and ultimately how poorly-run the Premier League is.

Why don't they just say what the decision should be: 'offside' or 'goal'? Saying 'check complete' just adds a layer of ambiguity.

I don’t even support Liverpool but this is shocking how can this happen in the number 1 league in the world

As a Spurs fan even I was shocked at the moment when the final decision was offside... There is no fun in winning the game when the opponent is being robbed ...it kills the spirit of the game.

It wasn't a hand ball, we all no that, I'm a scouser, but that day the ref seen it as hand ball, look at all the yellows given out Djiota sent off the game was fixed. It's stunk the whole word apart from var can see it was fixed.

One of the referees or VAR assistants said off at 51 seconds, why wasnt it included in the video? That person is the most suspicious and should be investigated extensively across all his and his families bank accounts

@@agspr refs breaking the rule for Liverpool would be a disaster. What needs to be done is change the law, because breaking it sets a precident and now any ref can break a law if they feel it's wrong or they make a mistake.

When they ask to delay the game why cant they just take it back, give the goal, and then add time at halftime? So stupid.

How hard it is to make the communication between ref and VAR heard round the stadium. Wouldnt have happened otherwise

The VAR guy sounds too much like he doesn’t want the operator to finish checking the lines… why does he repeatedly tell the ref “check complete” before the operator is done?

Coz it’s clear onside when the line are shown. It’s just miscommunication which caused the error. The onfield official thought “check complete, it’s fine” meant the offside (the original decision made by the linesman) should stand while the VAR ref thought they conveyed message of “it’s fine, it’s not offside”

I'm a Tottenham fan but this is wrong.. This situation may repeat itself again in the future. There is no guarantee that this will not happen to Tottenham either. The Premier League should discipline them.

@@meznehemiaI doubt it. Tottenham players would feel that the result would be unfair as it wasn’t their fault that VAR got the decision wrong. They still scored the 2 goals, and according to them and the officials, they only conceded 1.

Guess what that's how a lot of coperarion work.

This was definitely deliberate because… 1. They usually show whats being checked on the big screen at the stadium. For this game THEY DIDN’T! 2. They usually show the decision on the big screen. For this game THEY DIDN’T! 3. VAR decisions usually takes atleast a minute. This one took SECONDS

How do VAR & asst VAR don't know the on field decision ? And after the replay operator remind them 0:52 they seem don't connect to what happen on the pitch. Absolutely crazy. Now we really have question about the integrity of the Premier League. I smell something fishy here. The replay operator was the only honest person in that room.

Yes. Clearly the onfield ref is as fault for not being clear with what the decision he had called for was and VAR weren't clear in what they were saying was actually being 'check completed'

They must have skipped their course on basic communication skills. This was about the legality of a GOAL, not a potential penalty or red card incident! Pathetic...

The behaviour has to be investigated. The communication seemed to be vague on purpose (“goal, offside, yeah”), to blur the fact that an obviously false decision against the result of the VAR was made.

Can't say any words after whatching this video....Shocking

0:47 to 0:51 _"Check complete, check complete. That's perfect. Off."_ It was not a miscommunication. It was actually called offside.

It's no wonder things go wrong with this chaotic style of communication, people talking over each other, other people not hearing each other- what a mess. The system of communication needs to be improved.

The ref spent a lot of time on checking Curtis Jones' fault for potential red card offence. And he was wrong about that decision IMO so he may have concluded 'I'm not gonna waste more time on penalising Liverpool again. Let's stick to the offside decision and we can continue the game." Don't want to see that Simon Hooper referee ever again in charge of a Premier League and any international football game. 😠

I used to do some stagehand work running spotlights and comms are always going to seem chaotic to someone not involved. But, even if people are talking over each other, the intentions and message should always be clear. 'Yes/no' can always be ambiguous. They need to switch to answering with statements instead. For example, to a question to 'is it not offside?', the answer shouldn't be 'yes/no', it should be 'confirmed onside/offside'. My wife is a nurse, and in the medical field they use closed-loop communication (repeating last order) to minimize any mistakes when communicating orally. This should be an easy fix with some training. Whether the PGMOL will actually implement it, is another question. I hope Liverpool follows up on the suit and we get some changes. As a Spurs fan, very disappointed in this game. Huge respect for Liverpool for playing how they did given the awful circumstances.

Liverpool have literally lost a title by a point. And these inconsistensies can happen to any other team. Proper investigation and actions must be taken against the refrees involved

​@@jakethewoz They are in this context but I get it...acknowledging the fact that it happens to other clubs and that Liverpool have been on the side that benefits from egregiously poor refereeing would impede the ability of your club and supporters to cry your way into being awarded points or a replay.

The refusal to correct their obvious mistake makes this hard to watch.

Watching this again after Doku's stud planting challenge. 1. The above one has to be the mother of all F ups. 2. Then the odegaard handball. 3. And then yesterday's pen not being given. Klopp's final season. Half of the first team still injured. I don't know what else will happen but I am still optimistic. YNWA

Going against all odds and raising monsters' mentality to fight back. Its difficult to swallow and allow me to say one thing. If Liverpool lost the title league by even 1 point, this match, will be in the limelight. That goal by Luis Diaz would have changed the game for the guests. Liverpool might not even need to be so aggressive resulting in 2 reds (1 very soft one) and an own goal. This is really really bad.

This is what I'm trying to bring to everyone's attention. Everything that Assistant VAR says is to validate the wrong decision.

The only competent official was the replay operator, the rest acted very suspiciously!😮😮

Assistant Referee 1 already said coming back for offside. Also, the screen was not showing any goal celebration prior to the 4-panel display screen. Now why would Darren and his assistant had thought a goal was given?

The most important blunder lies in the negotiations themselves. This is "reported on the field that the check is completed." That's not what they should report! Who invented this protocol at all?!? They should report: "Goal. Verification is complete." Or "Offside. Verification completed"

Absolute muppets. That many of them and they still can’t get it right 🤦‍♂️

As a 40 year United fan I love to see Liverpool lose but only when its losing fairly, but thats part of the rivalry. With that rivalry also comes respect. This debacle of a situation goes beyond fan rivalry and nobody wants to see teams getting shafted by the officials in this shambolic way. I feel sorry for the Liverpool players, staff and supporters. All fans should stand united against VAR!

That sounded like chaos.

It honestly sounds like they're under pressure to keep the game going and minimal amount of stoppage as possible. If they had 30 seconds longer to clarify everything and let people actually speak instead of just people talking over each other that decision might not have been so wrong.

I remember United was once given a penalty AFTER the final whistle was blown yet they couldn't delay a game that has progressed by not more than 30 seconds?! To rectify a "clear and obvious error"

The only difference in that is that VAR check was still ongoing eventhough the final whistle has been blown..but this one VAR check was completed..there might be a rule that VAR cannot change it once the check has been completed..i don't know ..just pointing out the difference that's all

@@dzeklakovic7568 ...The foul obviously occurred during game time and then was reviewed by VAR. While that was happening the ref blew for full time. The VAR check obviously has still got to be made. With the Liverpool incident all they had to do is ask the ref to stop play and alert him to the fact a wrong decision had been given. Not difficult ...but apparently they decided to keep digging when they found themselves in a hole.

So why didn’t the VAR guy say “ not offside goal stars “? Surely that’s simple enough

I'm not sure how bad I imagined this to be, but the actual reality is at least ten times worse. How have they managed that? Why is it so hard to just say: ''Check complete, he's onside''? All of this would've been avoided. That VAR referee can't have been paying any attention to what's going on.

Thats disgraceful, felt like the VAR was more worried about keeping the ball in play rather than getting the call right

It’s Assistant VAR who’s confusing the whole dialogue

The terms they use and way they speak to each other is confusing and leads to mistakes. There should be a clear statement "Goal, Diaz was onside" or "No Goal, Diaz was Offside".

Replay operator literally told everyone they were wrong after what sounded like the team thought the initial call on the pitch was onside. Once they realized the on the pitch was offside, they all froze like 'that's the wrong decision.' That's just pathetic all round.

I've been looking for examples of absolute shithouse communications to use as teaching cases of total communications breakdown. Thanks guys. this is one is a doozie!!!

Another lesson perhaps from Rugby Union, the ref actually asks a question like "Any reason NOT to give the try?" ... these VAR guys seemed to have framed their own question, not realising what the onfield decision was. Perhaps a little input from the Ref to VAR would help?

Now that we have heard the truth. We need a replay.
