Lisbon to Faro - Intercidades with Comboios de Portugal

I have to be in Faro that night, so it is time to take the Intercity (Intercidades) train from Lisbon Oriente to Faro.
You must give yourself some time to walk around Calatrava's Oriente station, especially if you like flowing curves of concrete and steel, and you know I do! After that we can experience the comfort of the 1st class in CP's intercity trains. they may not be as fast as the Alfa Pendulars, but they are still smooth and pretty quick too.
Finally the scenery and countryside on the run from the capital down to the Algarve coast, whilst not necessarily "spectacular", is really lovely, with changing vistas as you move from north to south and from the coast to the interior.
Departure: Lisbon - Oriente, Portugal
Destination: Faro, Portugal
Distance: 302 km / 199 miles
Duration: 3 hrs 33 mins
Average speed: 85 km/h 56 mph
Example cost: Adult single
1st Class: €30,85 / £26.30
2nd Class: €23,55 / £20.10
Date of Travel: January 2024
Operator: Comboios de Portugal (CP)
Motive power: CP Class 5600 electric locomotive
Manufacturer: Siemens/Sorefame (1993-1995)

Greetings from Portugal, nice video coverage of the Intercity route. The car ramp at Faro has unfortunately not been used for many years. Long ago there used to be a direct Porto-Faro autotrain service, called the Comboio Azul (lit. "Blue Train"), used often by seasonal workers who didn't want to do the tiresome journey south by car. With the expansion of motorways, cross-country travel by car became a lot less painful, and with waining demand CP eventually axed the loss-making service.

The car loading ramp was used by the "Comboio Azul" it allowed people to load their cars in Porto and unload them in Faro, interestingly it didn't pass in Lisboa.

I DID think Oriente station was quite impressive when I was there, but it's also a bit impractical - at platform level anyway. It was rainy and windy and that beautiful roof offers absolutely NO protection from the weather. If you're there again, do walk through the shopping centre the other way, down to the river estuary. There is a waterside walk with great views of the Ponte Vasco de Gama, some artwork, an arena, a marina and even a cable-car you can ride out over the water.

Thanks Kevin. Do go and stand in the station. It is very interesting space indeed. I suppose i was a little harsh on them all as the low winter sun was coming in on their side. However, i was already taken aback by how much luggage many of them had. I always judge that people with a lot of luggage gain their pleasure from the time they spend at the destination rather than the time they spend travelling... to each their own

It's January, temperatures are still fairly reasonable, but at the height of Summer, it can get hot and the sun can be relentless. Not sure the windows are tinted, as they are in some other countries, either. Plus, I assume most people are Portuguese who make this trip fairly often, so they are used to it.

I have also visited Oriente station. It is stunning at night. I have come across a lot of Calatrava's works throughout Europe. I am not aware of any of his stuff in the UK. Perhaps he is regarded as too outlandish for British tastes.
