Love Lisa Hannigan! She definitely falls into the category of "she had me the moment she opened her mouth." Even before she starts singing, she has such a beautiful presence that carries her voice all more.

Interesting, it doesn't sound broken to me.. she conveys the sadness and lament of her friend for his mother exceeding well. These are Lisa Hannigans words from a previous interview ....."It's about a very good friend of mine, and his mother. She had a terminal diagnosis and her and her husband of 40 years faced it with stoicism and dignity. The song sort of fell out. It was a tribute to them, but from his point of view."
She finally did it, this will be a standard for singers with taste and no doubt a perfect eulogy for loved ones.
I understand she wrote this for her friend who's mother was dying. I'm hope she was able to appreciate it before she passed.

It’s more chord-based than scale-based. Lots of borrowed chords. Starts in C# Major. Second chord is F major with a C in the bass to keep the bass movement linear. This chord could prob be seen to be borrowed from A# Harmonic Minor (a relative minor scale of C# Major) because the melody has a subtle F Phrygian Dominant vibe. Then we go to A#m, the relative minor, and follow through on the linear bass path to arrive at A major with floaty lydian vibes. The chorus cycles back and forth between C# Major and AMaj7, which is pretty cinematic. Both chords share many chord tones, which is why the change works so nicely. Lisa plays around with dissonance in spots with the melody. Sometimes on the C# Major chord in the verses, she flirts with the minor 3rd in the melody, building lots of tension. I think it’s the most interesting part musically. It’s very unusual and if done without great care, should sound awful. Lisa makes it work so hauntingly well. Another great dissonance moment is in the transition from C# to F in the verses when she hangs on the E in the melody during the change before carefully resolving to the safety of the 5th of F. The E is the suspensed 4th of C# and the b9 of F. Super dissonant note to hang on over such a non-standard change.
