For me, it was because I had a white background solid within the comp. I removed it, and now it's sharp.

My version of after effects only shows the rectangle option so I did the same but with rectangles doesn't look as cool but it worked.

Can you do an animation that floats from side-to-side, or maybe in a circular motion? I’m looking to apply this kind of animation to a single object.

I had the same issue and resolved it by removing any background solids and instead defining the background color in the composition settings. I hope this helps
