From experience I learned never ever use additives in your engine. You want to clean your injectors? Have a shop clean and calibrate them. Want your internals to be nice change your oil regularly or more often. Short cuts cost a lot more in the long run.

true, never use as ´maintenance´, but using additives on a healthy and well looked after engne will do only good

@@Whichwaydidtheygo for example there is ceratec from liqui moly, it’ll make your engine last longer because it applies some type of ceramic coating on the internals through the oil

@@raiinydayz1889 I’m just passing along info I can’t substantiate the claims for or against additives but additives place stress on bearings and cranks. You can get the same result by adding higher viscosity oil but I don’t think any of this is necessary on a well cared for auto

Rather than do an engine flush with some fancy expensive oil additive 'potion', I'd just drain off the oil, put some cheap oil in, change the filter, run it like you stole it for 500 miles or so, then swap out the oil for the better stuff. Oil has cleaning detergents built in, it naturally flushes the engine and helps to reduce carbon and sludge build up. Better still just do more regular oil and filter changes, I change mine every 5k miles, even though the service interval is closer to 20k miles⚠️😲😳 There is a reason the manufacturer wants such long intervals between services. 1. They want their customers to think their cars require less servicing than competitors. 2. It's not in a manufacturers interest to have an engine last for an extended period, nevermind much much beyond the warranty period. If the service book says oil change every 18k miles, I'd half that at the very least.

Why would I drive it like I stole it for 500 miles that's so stupid and can cause a host of other problems in itself, let alone crash. These additives are relatively cheap, effective and a smart thing to do. If you've bought a car with an unknown service history absolutely chuck some in at a service but if you use synthetic high quality oil a flush doesn't need to be do each service. Either way, look after your car.

@@THESCRANBADGER I didn't mean literally, I meant metaphorically 'drive it like you stole it'. It's a term used to mean drive it briskly ie through the rev range, like an Italian tune up! I did mention it's better to do more regular oil changes with quality oil.

I find it's a great job, it's cleans the Carbon build up, oil drain is very black which means it's done a good job. I use it every oil change and I think it is totally necessary except you were changing oil every 3k miles as you really should of you want your engine to last a long time. Carbon and acids are the engines enemies.
@Whichwaydidtheygo

@@martinmuldoon603 your oil should not be black every time you change your oil. Additives themselves can cause oil to darken. Also if your oil is black every 3000 or so miles do you really know why it is black. Additives can also cause premature bearing wear. If the manufacturer prescribed additives it’s ok but I have never seen a factory maintenance manual that called for additives. Perceived power gains, dirty oil, clean injectors are all guesswork or bias. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If you REALLY want to know the status of your engine you can keep a sample of your oil at the next change and send it in for analysis. This is not expensive. They sell kits to do this.
