LiPo Charging Garage Fire Destroys RC's

Ойын-сауық

Episode 33
Back in 2020, I had a garage fire from charging a LiPo battery pack. I was using a reliable charger that I had been using for the last decade with a brand new battery that had never been charged. My mistake was walking away from the charger thinking it was OK. I have worked with LiPo batteries for almost 20 years. I understood the dangers of these batteries but never thought it could happen to me. Until that day.
Fortunately we were able to put out the fire before it could spread. the fire damage was very localized and superficial. The smoke damage was much more extensive. Because the smoke is incredibly corrosive, pretty much everything in the garage suffered some kind of permanent damage. The smoke also spread into the attic damaging anything that wasn't stored in plastic bins.
I consider us very lucky in that no one was injured and the damages to the house were minimal. I lost quite few tools and RC's from both the fire and smoke but those are easily replaceable.
Be safe and vigilant about your battery storage and charging setup.
In this video I talk about some of the options for storing and charging LiPo's that I use and some simple modifications to help make them work.

Thanks for the interesting video. Sorry about the fire. To save drilling the ammo boxes I have seen several videos and blogs about simply removing the rubber seal/gasket in the lid. This will allow some venting of the gasses. Sadly if you have a battery problem indoors you will still have smoke damage. I also use the Batt-Safe. The filters in the lid are supposed to help stop smoke damage and also make the gasses safer. Hope we don't have to test them for real!

Great reminder! As a former firefighter - I agree, you have to train so muscle memory kicks in when an emergency happens.

Yep, I need to do a better job with training and safety drills. We used to do them in schools and even at work, but not so much in our personal lives.

Good info here. I store my lipos in lipo bags. The bags are then placed in a husky 2door cabinet that I have lined with cement board.

I store mine in the small single battery charging "fireproof" pouches and then in one of the lunchbox sized one and then In an extra large ammo can! I do need to vent the can still so thank you for reminding me, I will do that today! I am very safe with mine and check them often to make sure they are at a safe level. I do not want to loose my entire garage from a $30 battery I was ignoring! Good to put out the safety tips and share your story in hopes it prevents it from happening to someone else!

So a bag, within a bag, within a can? That's impressive. I do need to up my storage game as far as discharging/charging the pack for storage. It sounds like you've got it down. I have so many packs that it becomes a challenge to manage. I probably need to thin the collection of packs and dispose of the ones that I'm not using to make it easier to manage.

@@jack-o-trades Yeah bag in a bag in a ammo can!! I am not trying to loose what I have collected over a $30 battery!! It s hard to go through them every few months and check them but you know first hand what a pain in the butt it can be to clean up all that mess!

I have the same setup and with drywall lining the floor of my ammo can. People say I’m crazy. But even with this double bag ammo can setup I worry. I live an in apartment. Not worried about fire so much, but smoke damage for me would be a disaster.

Why do so many people vent their ammo cans? In my club nobody vents them. We have a no oxygen, no fire policy. Are we wrong?

Great video! And so timely for me as I just received my first Lipos. Working as an aircraft engineer, I was surprised the LiPo bag didn't come with any sort of 'burn certificate' stating its certifications, so I don't really trust it either. Another thing I noticed in the video ..... That's a really nice drill press and chuck. Nicer than most aerospace hangars have and we are supposed to be 'state of the art'. Really looking forward to your builds as I obviously build high end, high attention to detail stuff also and work with many types of materials.

Thanks! I left that little snippet in the video thinking someone might pickup on it as I slowed down the RPM for deburring. Yes I do love my new drill press. And, I love me some Albrecht keyless chucks. I can't justify the price of a new one but you can find good deals on Ebay for used. Prior to that I had a nice Delta X5 variable speed. I am loving the Nova though with its RPM range, crontrolls, quill DRO, and the direct drive is amazing. My only hangup with the drill press is that out of the box, it's pretty short. There isn't enough space between the base and the head. I have a drill bit cabinet that I like to tuck under the table so I need the space. I solved this problem by building a 15" riser between the base and the mast.

I just bought 2 bat-safe. Not enough for all my batteries but i got the big ones in it. I charge in it. I stay near where i charged. Especially before i got bat-safe i stay right next to and left porch unlocked which right next to just in hope i could throw something out fast.

Oh, that's a serious topic. Very good reminder. I am sorry to hear this is based on an experience you have had, I am also happy to hear it didn't go worse. It was a nice feature in your video that you said you would drill those holes and you actually did it, very important statement! I keep saying to myself I should improve my battery safety, but sadly so far I have been without significant action behind my intentions. I store my LiPo's on a metal shelf where I also charge them, and it is actually inside the house, in the cellar. My theory is that since the metal shelf should act as a heatsink, but probably not enough. And what you said about the smoke is the nasty part. I have lots of fire safety training from my workplace, but in my home sadly I am quite negligent, and complacent... I think I need to invest a bit in this, I have to! Thanks for telling your story, buddy, I hope this never happens again for anyone!

Thanks for the feedback. It's never too soon to make small changes that can have large impacts on being prepared and safer. I do hope that this helps prevent someone from having the same experience. It's far too easy to turn a blind eye to these hazards especially as these batteries become more and more prevalent in our daily lives. We've become so inundated with warning labels that when something presents a very real hazard, we tend to gloss over it as another warning label. But I'll get off my soapbox.

I have to dislike your video... - first because you put batteries together no separation - second your solution does not work because the quantity of batteries that you put in a box is really exaggerated for what that box can handle
