Interesting factoid, for the films the whistle on the Olton Hall is overdubbed with a chime whistle from an LNER A4 pacific (which is used on the model too). A Great Western Hall has two "peanut" style whistles, one high pitched that is used as usual, and and another of a lower pitch that is used to signal the guard (conductor) back in the coaches of a passenger train on or the brake van on a goods train. Also, British engines do NOT have bells, except in cases where they have visited the USA and been presented with them to conform to US law.

The GWR King George V locomotive has a bell. She is preserved at the NRM... As a child a long time ago I recall her ringing the bell as she arrived at Paddington...

Those are Lionel Logging Disconnect Cars. Do a search on Lionel's website. The engine is the Lionel Legacy Heisler's they released a year or two ago.

Lionel has made several Hall Class locomotives besides the Hogwarts Express. The Shakespeare Express was a conventional transformer controlled set featuring the Kinslet Hall locomotive in Great Western livery. The Albert Hall set was a Lionchief set in Great Western colors. There was also a Victorian Christmas Lionchief set with a red engine and red and green cars. There were two seperate sale conventional North Pole Central Hall Class Santa's Flyer locomotive, one red and one green. There was a conventional Hallows Eve Express locomotive in black with orange trim. I think there's a Lionchief set in the 2020 catalog.

Yup, in 2020 Lionel cataloged the "Witherslack Hall" set which was LionChief equipped and came in British Railways instead of a Great Western livery. However it was cancelled due to not enough pre-orders. I have the Shakespeare Express but the Albert Hall has eluded me.

The whistle sounds more like a European train whistle than the 1st sets. This old prewar & postwar guy likes it.

Only the Lionel Legacy and Lion Chief Plus and Plus 2.0 engines that have speed control can start a crawl. These Lionchief sets (which are starter sets) cannot do super slow crawl. They kind of take off.

Yeah they put the bell sound on all the Ready to Run sets whether the engine would have had it or not. HAHA, it is more for kids. But the scale models would be more accurate.

Sean, I just bought the Hogwarts Express loco from Lionel. I am having some issues with the Pilot truck rubbing on the forward most drive wheel when going around 036 curves. Have you experienced this if you have any 036 curves?

No I have not, but I don't have any curves that tight. I looked at mine and it looks like it would have enough room even on tight curves. Can you return it to your dealer?

@@seanstraindepot I called Lionel today and they offered to ship in to Charlotte to look at it. I don't see where any adjustments can be made. The wheel flanges flat out scrub each other in the turn. It's really odd. We'll see what Lionel says.

Also, the forward wheel on the pilot truck (on the inside of the turn) is beginning to rub a groove on the inside of the cylinder casting. Something is definitely wrong.

They don't really have cabooses as it is a passenger train.

Usually no. There are some sets but there super expensive and you need a certain controller for them.

Do you know how long the train will run before the batteries need to be changed? I'd like it to run all day! And if there's track extensions to make it go from a 6' * 4' oval to a 10' * 5' oval :-)

This is an electric train set, there are no batteries. I think you are thinking of a different set, the Ready To Play Set. That is totally different set. More just like a cheap toy set.

The RTR (Ready to Run) sets comes with everything. Track, transformer, electric train and are more realistic looking, with smoke, sound, remote. The Ready to Play sets are just battery operated plastic engines, with plastic track and meant for very small children more as toys.

It is a shame they did not use the correct whistle sound for the engine.

The instructions should tell you but these have small reservoirs so I would say 8 max should be plenty.

My train has an issue with the app not letting my train stream my voice to the train have you had that issue because I’m thinking of sending it in to Lionel and see if they can fix it or just give me a new engine

I think that depends on the year of the engine, not all are able to do it depending on when it was made. The voice control came later.

To clear up a few things, 1 there is no need for a caboose as there is a brake coach (combination car) 2 this isn't anything like the flyingscotsman 3 this is a real engine yes but it isn't used as the engine it is in real life (Olton hall) and JK Rowling created the Hogwarts Express especially for Harry Potter and it has nothing to do with Thomas and Friends.

Further to clarify, the combination coach should be at one end of the rake, not in the middle, with the Guard's/luggage compartment outwards. The whole model is actually quite accurate, except for the coaches being shortened (fewer windows) to take the tight curves.

It was around 420.00 for the Main set and the 2 add-on cars. Prices can vary depending on where you buy it. But that was a few years ago, so of course everything has gone up.

Is the hog warts express a version of the flying Scotsman? Also have you seen the Lego hogwarts express? Or the LEGO emerald night (flying Scotsman)

Flying Scotsman (no definite article in British locomotive names unless "The" is actually on the nameplate as in Regimental names) is a 3-cylinder 4-6-2 of the London North Eastern Railway, whereas the Hall class used in the Harry Potter movies is a Great Western 2-cylinder 4-6-0. Totally different.

The Hall class was a precursor to the Stanier 'Black Five' along with the Thompson B1 and BR Standard 5MT 4-6-0 were the first true mixed traffic engines.

Hi Sean, Overall a nice video, but you keep saying "England". The Hogwarts Express is based on a specific train in Scotland called "The Jacobite". You can say 'Britain' or 'UK' if you'd like to refer to these locomotives being used across the whole United Kingdom, but not England... especially when the example in question is a Scottish train. ;)

For what could have been a nice set it is spoiled by under length coaches and dare I say a gap you could have driven a train through between the engine and tender. Also why put a bell on it. British engines never had bells on them.

I wouldn’t be to hard on the looks being that Lionel isn’t good at replicating UK steam or Diesel engines
