Lionel 2-Truck Shay Locomotive
Ойын-сауық
My review of Lionel's new Legacy equipped 2-truck Shay Locomotive. A fantastic model! Find more videos on my site at www.ericstrains.com. Purchase this and other O-Scale trains at my favorite trains store, Legacy Station (770-339-7780 or www.legacystation.com). Enjoy!

I live near a railroad museum that has a rust yard with a shay and a heistler. Unfortunately they have been left to rust because the museum doesn't have enough money to maintain them, but still really cool to see them up close
I got the chance to have a cab ride in one of these yesterday, it was a wonderful experience meeting the engineer and fireman who were nice enough to teach me how everything works and allow me to ring the bell and blow the whistle as we went in and out of the yard and across grade crossings.

You lucky dude. I would probably get all teared up if that opportunity would ever be extended to me. I've loved steam traction engines, locos, even stationary engines since I was a wee lad. Then one year my Grandpa took me to the flywheels exhibition and I was hooked! The BBC did a series on Fred Dibnah a Steeple Jack in the U.K.. What an awesome man. Look him up you'll get hooked. And GOD bless you brother. Remember the most important Commandment and remind others. The World is about to change! WWG1WGA
I have rode on Shay number 11. An engine with a lot of memories for me
What an awesome locomotive. I'll have to add it to my bucket list. Thanks for the review!
$900!!! That would be a steal in 2023 prices.
This is my first time seeing one of these. So cool!
A mountainous layout such as yours is a very appropriate place for such a locomotive. Beautiful set up Eric.
That has to be one of the best sounding whistles of any locomotive! So classic!
Great review Eric! This seems like a perfect fit for the upper level of your layout!
I dig the way the smoke feature puffs with the chugging of the engine. Even though a Shea chugs much faster than that. Beautiful engine. GOD bless you brother!
I've been on the double-header full day trip in cass on that railroad. Numbers 3 and 6 pulled my train (I should say pushed as they never ran the trains with the cars behind the engines when going on logging runs or in the excursions currently ran. I recommend going for anyone who's into railroading. I have a great love of west Virginia and the history of that region so it was a great time but when I found out that just about every locomotive they run was made in my home state of Ohio it brought even more pride in my state. Going up a 14% grade in a train was also incredible since virtually no other locomotive is capable of it on smooth track.
Hey, Eric, you did an awesome job comparing steam locomotive to bicycle. I never thought of it that way. You have incredible insight on this stuff.

This is what I call a great review, simplistic editing and detailed looks at the locomotive. Bravo!

I happen to love the crew talk feature. I don't know why people don't like them. To me, the train wouldn't be nearly as much fun to play with without the crew talk. That makes it so much more fun. Keep doing the crew talk, Eric. I love hearing the locomotives interact like that.
Excellent training; you're very well trained. Cheers!
what a beautiful locomotive ill never be able to afford
A locomotive like that deserves a vision line upgrade.
Great review Eric! I agree, the low gearing makes the engine look great in action. The sounds are nice as well. The NC Transportation museum in Spencer has the worlds fastest shay, it can hit around 15 mph, it's a 3 truck shay. I enjoyed the review, thanks for sharing!
Another great review Eric! I almost brought one of these about two years ago, but wasn't sure about it. I'm reconsidering it now. Thanks!
Bravo! Great description of a fascinating model.
I give Lionel props, the sound pack was great! Excellent review.
I wish there was one that had the whistle of the l&n 3 chime from 2010
Very cool looking engine, it would look great weathered with a couple of old log cars. Great review, been a model RR for over forty years, all your videos are great fun to watch. Thanks
Thanks Eric, Great Review. Hope to see your RR someday with all your Engines.
Great review, as always. That is a great little engine. They look so cool. Great sounds
Cool loco Eric. Thanks for sharing.
I've always wanted a shay, nice locomotive Eric!
love the shay Locomotive, good video
Very neat little engine. Interesting how it operates, very different from a standard steam engine with that gear system. The look of the Shay reminds me a little of Thomas the tank engine, mostly because it has a coal bunker instead of seperate tender. Great review Eric!
Great review!
That is the most awesome whistle I ever heard on Lionel steamer.
Have you ever thought about buying one of the Lionel Subway sets and maybe putting a subway line under your layout? They are really great models, even the doors open too! The sound system is amazing
Love the whistle
Awesome!
oh i'm excited for this one
This was 1st train I ever rode with my Grandfather at the Cass Scenic Railway
I like it. My town has one of the real shay train engines on display in our park. My town use to be a big lumber company. The engines number is one. It is decorated every christmas. If you want to see it, it is in cadillac michigan, it is pretty cool looking.
There's this little railway near me that runs an old shay (Ely-Thomas Lumber Co. No. 6 to be specific) it's been under restoration since 2003, but it'll be up and running as soon as they're done with Chiriqui Land Co. No. 46.
Ok, One thing, Its pronounced L"eye"ma not L"ee"ma. Great review!

Nice train really want one
That shay would look great with maybe 5 or 7 steam-era cars behind it, Eric.
Beauty!
Hey Eric, ordered a Shay friday, thanks again bud!
Eric you can run it with 1 or 2 heavyweight passenger cars with caboose for a tourist railroad feel.
This 2-truck shay of course is from K-Linemtooling. Lionel got them when they sued K-Line and put them out of business. The actual scale of the model is a bit larger than 1/48th scale coming in around 1/43rd scale which of course makes our O gauge track more correct in its gauge.
fantastic loco & vid great gamera work
looks like a neat loco, you could always throw a logging line or camp somewhere in the colorado room.
They had one of these model engines at a christmas tree farm I used to go to in Nebraska. It's called Santa's woods and it's near the Omaha area if anyone is interested
AWESOME review Eric!!!!! The Shay looks like another great locomotive that will definitely be added to my wish list! ... Just wandering, how does it sound in person having only one speaker? Thanks for the vid bud and have a great one! P.S. I love the Lionel crew talk and tower com. My favorite dialog is on the Lionel Crane and boom car "raise the load" LOL! Thanks again!
Thanks!
Yes, I like them. They are usually optional, you don't have to use them if you don't want to....with the only exception being the shut down sequence on Lionel engines. All other crew talk sounds are optional.
Last year my friends went to Cass WV and rode the CSRR. They noticed the way they blow their whistles is a little different than the typical RR safety singnal

So jealous...I wish I could afford all these trains...neat video.
Once again, a very nice review, Eric. I really like the engine, nice sounds although I agree the chuff doesn't sound right. Still, I wish I could afford one. ;-)
I’ve been to Cass I’ve seen this Shay it’s a masterpiece
Theres something about a Lionel, they are magic!
great job as always Eric, how ever i don't think i would want to pay extra for the legacy addition just to say i have it, it would be more realistic if it had the crew talk form the lumbering aspect...how ever it is very well done..thanks to K lines tooling. we can say at lest we are preserving the past...thanks for the posting..
By the looks of the trucks, that is a 2-truck Pacific Coast Shay. Pacific Coasts were basically a much-improved on version of the standard Shay (with such improvements as a new truck design, superheater as standard, Walschaerts valve gear, etc.) in order to compete with the Willamette geared locomotive, which itself was a much improved-upon copy of the Shay. Then, of course, Heisler came out with their West Coast Special Heislers to compete with the Willamette and Lima's Pacific Coast. I'm not entirely sure if there ever was a 2-truck Pacific Coast built, but it could've easily happened.
The advantage was no single axle can slip. Like positive traction on a car. Which allowed the Shay to negoiate the steep winding tracks in the lumber industry..
this would be fun to own just to watch the mechanics..pretty neat
Thanks, bud.
Lionel's been using three rail track for a long time, only reason they haven't gone over to more prototypical two rail is that it would make the older trains and accessories, say the postwar stuff, incompatible. I see that as a good thing, for given the cost of even the older Lionel stuff, it's nice to know that it'll all still work with the present range so long as you're running conventional DC.
Great video! I didn’t know the front opened. I bought the Western Maryland for my son a number of years ago. Problem is it goes a short distance and trips the transformer. All of our other locomotives run without issue except the shay. Ran it on someone else track and ran fine. We run a Rail King z controller. Any ideas? Thanks in advance
Eric, could you make a tutorial on how to "unlock" some of those hidden features that you know so well on your legacy remote? I am considering getting that system and it would be cool to see some of its features, especially if my favorite youtuber taught me. Just an idea. Keep up the great videos! My little brother and I love them. -Ian
Great engine and please review the daylight
Do you know if they have rolling stock / passenger cars that match the ones used on the Cass Scenic Railway today?
Hope to see the Shay in the Colorado room
Love this vid how many vid are u going to do
Hi Eric, Great review. I love the look of the locomotive and the operation of it as well. The only thing I'm disapointed about with this model, is the chuff rate. There should be THREE chuffs for each revolution of the Piston drive shaft, not just one chuff. I do wish that Lionel would do something about the chuff rates on all their Steam Locomotives. I dont understand why they cant correct it to the way it should be.
@leecox6540

The chuff rate on this is so wrong. Absolutely terrible
The Shay you have, Eric, is a Class B (2 trucks & 3 cylinders).
Eric I gotta ask are you a fan of the tower sounds for any of the locomotive manufactors? I think a great option would to be able to turn that on or off.
Hi Eric, you mentioned a 'plain jane' version of this model in your video, do you happen to know the model number and where I might find one to purchase?
That will look goof on the upper loop!
Very nice model! My only complaint is that it is 2 chuffs only. The minimum chuff for a steam locomotive is 4 chuffs and shays or supposed to have 6 chuffs.
hey eric can you do a full review on that MTH dash 8 conrail narrow nose for me please?
Hey i have been watching your videos for about a month now and was just wondering do you have any HO scale model trains or passenger trains like Amtrack or Via rail?
No, most of the road names are logging railroads. They do have Pennsylvania Power & Light, however.
Hey Eric, mys grandpa has a PP&L shay and it pulls freight cars off the rails because the knuckle couplers don't swing far enough. I was wondering if you had any experience.
Oh my god I’m getting it for Christmas

I want the Roaring Camp one
An excellent example of "form follows function". Shays never did much for me- I miss the "flashing rods", and the fireman's side of the engine is kind of dull. But it's still a good looking model that would be perfect on any logging layout.
cool
Now where have I heard that whistle before?
Cass Scenic RR's Shay #3 is actually in real life a 3 truck shay. but did they have a #3 two truck?
Is it easier to run this engine at very slow speeds because of the reduction gearing?
Eric, I just had a brainstorm....why not use the Legacy Command Control to have a tiny motor move the bell as the bell ringing sound is active?
@trainlover9943
9 жыл бұрын
They have done that feature on certain engines including the Vision Line Hudson which my uncle has.
Shay's chug 6 times per revolution. Turbines have a continuous sound.
Can you still buy one new or do you have to buy a used one. Thanks Scott
Because they felt like it, I guess. :)
do they have a Pennsylvania railroad road number and great video
I went to legacy station but couldn't find this on their online store.>_

I want to go.
she was built here in lima she was built by the lima baldwin locomotive works
I wish I could own one oh well one of these years
Awesome video! But a bicycle does not actually have reduction gearing. Even in 10 speeds the lowest gear is close to 1 to 1. So a tricycle actually has the most torque for getting up a hill haha.
I like them to
Eric could you tell me what train a beginner could buy couse i am starting in the hobby
@Coaster_Universe
9 жыл бұрын
I know I'm not Eric but if you want to start the hobby start with a simple ready to run set that you like/ can afford. Then from there start buying track, cars, buildings, more engines, but start with a "ready to run" set. And from there just expand.
okay that's what i thought. because i don't remember them ever having a two truck shay#3 so why is lionel using that roadname?
The Legacy Shays are sweet looking, the problem is Lionel continues to advertise them as being able to run on 031 curves, while the engine will if you just happen to want it to pull any cars it derails the first car everytime on 031 curves and Lionel knows it and refuses to fix the problem!
