Hi Derek, you do a fantastic job with all your videos of many different linux distributions! I've seen nearly all of vour videos so long, a really good job, what you are doing. Sorry, my english is not perfect, because I live in Germany, but your pronunciation in your videos is amazingly good, so I can understand everything what you are telling about without any problems! Keep it up, Derekt, people like you are needed for the Linux community!

I cannot agree more on the confusing naming of application such as 'Files'. If they want to be generic in application managing, it should be something like 'Gnome File Manager' or just 'File Manager', which has a clear meaning. Also, they create potential confusion where people have to figure out why gnome has both 'Files' and Nautilus when they are the same damned thing. I think it should be avoided to have two names for one thing.

Hi d.t., as usual an informative and entertaining video, thanks. As for LMDE3, it looks very nice but as it sports (I understand) the perniciously invasive systemd and uses the Cinnamon d/top, which is too memory hungry for my machines, I think that my daily driver OS, MX Linux is way ahead of this Debian 'spin'.

Redshift goes on all my linux installs. Right after htop and vim. I just can't take the harsh blue tones at night. The geoclue auto location can be a problem some times but putting your coordinates in ~/.config/redshift/redshift.conf makes it work every time.

I got bored last night, and decided to do a fresh clean install on hardware of Fedora Workstation Rawhide using yesterday's nightly version ( unofficial ). This was my 7th install on hardware of an rpm-based distro, and my 4th Fedora, and 2nd Rawhide. So I am no longer a Fedora newbie. Getting the free and nonfree rpmfusion repos is no longer a big deal. It is a 4 click process on the rpmfusion website. Supposedly you can do it in one cut and paste in the command line. I will try that someday. Kernel 4.19.rc3, Mesa 18.2.0. flapak 1.0.1 preinstalled along with flathub, so installing a flatpak is fairly easy. All of the problems I found in Fedora 29 are worse in Rawhide. The Software Center is slower than molasses ( on my hardware ). All of the things one hates about Fedora are still there. Meaning you can't get Broadcom wi-fi without being a Linux nerd, nor watch videos on CNN. There is one interesting thing. I believe the basic Gnome apps are all preinstalled as flatpaks. Why is this cool ? Well you could easily uninstall all of them with just one easy command, and it would not affect your system. Then you could pick then ones you want from the standard repo. This is the future of Linux on the desktop. Future computers will have an abundance of resources so all the extra clutter of flatpak won't matter, except to users with O.C.D. So far I have booted about 40 times, and only twice did I get a usable desktop, and the first one crashed doing a simple thing of adding a icon to the dock. This could very well be a hardware problem on my end, as I have been having that similar problem with all my Fedora installs. ( Didn't happen on Plasma OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, though. ). After months of using Fedora as my only operating system, I am still NOT a fan of Fedora, nor yet a fan of Gnome. There are things I like about Gnome and it is not an awful ugly operating system. But it can't touch Plasma at its present stage. Where it shines is in its Wayland impletation, and most likely on touchscreens. ( Disclaimer: I have never tried Budgie and haven't tried Cinnamon in 2 years ). You get Gnome 3.30 out of the box, and flatpak installation from the Software Center is improved. There seem to be more Gnome Extensions. Dnfdragora ( the gui package installer ) is broken, so getting wi-fi is going to be a nerdy task.

I've noticed that overexposed background also on the Ubuntu-based Mint versions. It will return no matter what desktop background you set after a reboot. I haven't figured it out, just end up changing the background image to 'fix' it. I haven't tried on hardware, so it may be something specific to VirtualBox.

Its nice and works, but since the kernel and everything else is so out of date is requires too much work to actually get to where it needs to be. That is the same problem with Debian, if it was more up to date it would be the go to distro for most. Even the most used distro Ubuntu you are out of date, but when you try any Debian based (This or MX Linux) they make Ubuntu seem cutting edge.

I am pleased to announce that if you get the inclination to install the unofficial nightly of Fedora 29, that you will get upon updating the new Gnome 3.30 components, along with a recent version of Xorg, and kernel 4.18.5. I am in Gnome 3.30 in Fedora 29 ( unofficial pre-Beta ). Htop shows 1.5 GB of DDR3 memory usage with Firefox in idle, and my old 4 cores of Intel i5-3400 are churning away at around 5 % each. I only have 2 issues at the moment. Boot time is slower than molasses, and some codec is missing for watch videos on news channels like CNN. I forget which HTML5 thingamabob I have to get. But in many distros you don't have to worry about such things. In 2018, the distro installer should ask you, "Do you want to be able to watch news videos on the web ?" and the default should be "Yes."

  • @CrustyAbsconder

I have about 4 man-hours now in Gnome 3.30 ( using Fedora 29 pre-beta ). I somehow got the video playback on the news websites. I can't remember what fixed it. I tinkered with adding a few flatpaks. I think Fedora 29, will be pretty good by January, as long as you know how to set it up and can live in Gnome, assuming there are no regressions with future updates to the current components. I have not yet played with Rawhide, since Fedora 29 branched off. I have had one crash during the install of an app. The Software Center and the gui installer "dnfdragora," still have a long way to go, before users will be totally happy - if there is such a milestone. I am at the point, where it is just easier to install a package in the terminal. I have played a couple of games of Freecell, and one of Mahjongg. I wish Mahjonng were a flatpak. I guess that is a few months away ? I surfed the web, and Firefox 62, seems to work okay. I don't yet have a valid reason to leave this install, and play with another, since I have everything set up now.

Lolz getting bogged by themes there - I had issues myself but it's fixed. Step 1. Choosing a good metacity theme, most importantly one that follows the colour of your window if you don't need it to contrast. Try this one - size is set by the font (no padding) so it can be very nice and compact with a legible window title, can dissapear with font size1 - works great with ubuntu font size 8 and gives more screen to the window. Best 'theme' is like materia style, but not dark or bright - so test out Equilux-compact for the Desktop theme and 'Ultimate-Dark' the flat blue works well. It needs to be renamed 'Mint-Y-Dark' to avoid problems with theming in snap etc which only recognise names of system themes. Try my metacity, see what u think... www.dropbox.com/s/1oo8uo4199tpks3/metacity-1.zip?dl=0

I chose LMDE because it is supposed to be a rolling release. This enabled me to upgrade from 1 to 2 a few years ago, with minimum disruption. Disappointingly this time, although I have the Cinnamon desktop installed on the Mate version of Betsy, on two machines, I find from "mintupgrade check" that is not possible this time around. So I have to start from scratch and hope I don't lose anything in the process. This is going to take hours away from me doing something more productive. This is very annoying.
