I think eventually it will happen. They had it back in the day when SteamOS was debian based, but back then proton wasn't a thing. I think the biggest issue for desktop SteamOS is literrally down to one thing: Nvidia. They somehow will need to get around Nvidia's proprietary driver, as well as all the different versions needed for older GPUs. There is the NVK project that is looking great for Nvidia users though, so perhaps maybe Valve will use that instead.

The problem with Linux on the desktop is not the games, it never was the games, macOS is so in demand and has never cared about games. Linux systems are modeled on opensource software, and everything that is not free does not have an appropriate place... it turns out that a lot of software is not viable to be "open source", so it continues to be developed for Windows and Mac. For those who only use a browser for KZread and playing games... ok. But what about those who want to use Pro Tools? Altium Designer? Adobe? The world is not just games.

@BrunoSilveira-mu2hs there are alternative software. Gimp is an open source alternative to Photoshop for instance. It takes time and effort to learn them. Hence, linux isn't as popular. But those who have done so are now daily driving linux. Another common practice I see is people dual booting that way you get best of both worlds. I would say hardware compatibility is bigger issues as Nvidia for example don't work with Linux well. And finding niche hardware for Linux can sometimes be expensive. Linux laptops for instance cost more as they don't achieve economics of scale.

@@griffin1366 1 : find me a single instance of a mainstream benchmark using a non-stock system. You can't, because it's not practical to test, people would whine that it's an unfair test, and it's impossible to do consistently. In spite of that, it's also the only test that remotely matters in terms of actual user-facing performance. At best you'll get people who literally just install a few things like a browser or the controls for the hardware, but that represents a small fraction of the random shit that ends up installed on most computers. So, should we assume that these numbers roughly in line with all other numbers ever published by any benchmark using the standard benchmarking method of a stock install, are in fact *_NOT_* using a stock install and are instead using a real, bloated, daily-driven computer that has all of the small little applications and background utiltiies most people have on their system, or should we assume they're using a stock system like every other benchmark ever? 2 : they literally weren't. At *_best_* you could argue windows is vaguely competitive, but it was on top just as much as it was on bottom. 3 : Hi, I use arch btw, I also use nvidia btw. On windows Apex Legends has absolutely horrendous LOD and popping issues that makes it a pain in the ass to play and I have to set the settings to medium to tune it to get decent FPS. On Linux I set everything to maximum, have zero LOD issues, and get not only 165fps but nigh-perfect frame timings too. Especially given you specifically mentioned buzzwords like 'hitches' or 'stutters' which Linux literally gets almost none of, I'm inclined to believe this is just an overdose on high-grade copium. The only time linux even gets anything remotely like those, as opposed to windows which gets them fairly frequently, is if you don't enable pre-caching in steam when initially turning on compatibility mode and you're pre-processing shaders on-the-fly. Even *_then_* though, I've personally had that disabled for months and never noticed. I've also played some legally aquired games that didn't have that Fossilize functionality and, again, no problems. Over 80-90% of the top games on steam are linux plug-and-play, including raytracing and any other fancy functionality*. And, those numbers are brought down massively by the few games at the top that are intentionally keeping anti-cheats blocking linux users, and I've found a strong correlation with intentionally fucking over your players and having a bad game that relies on shallow addiction-loops to keep players hooked without actually making the game enjoyable for them. (*with the single exception of HDR which, 1 : you don't have an HDR monitor anyway and 2 : it's being developed rapidly and some games can actually already run with HDR if you use them in fullscreen mode, it's just not quite as seamlessly adaptive. I mean did you think Valve made the Steam Deck OLED with an HDR screen without getting it's OS to play HDR games?) I won't tell you how to live your life, just be sure to keep a phone nearby in case you overdose on that copium and need medical help.

In my experience (with Intel CPU, Intel iGPU and libhoudini) Genshin Impact also works great, but on the other hand some games just don't work at all, like Fortnite and Call of Duty Mobile.

I recently tried using ChimeraOS on my gaming machine in my living room and tried it for a few days. It worked for the most part but I ran into issues on some of the more recent games I play (Jedi Survivor, Last of Us). Sadly I was running into things like textures not loading fully, Chimera didn't support RGB 444 12bit. Random artifacts popping in and out. Just issues I never ran into with Windows. I'm running a 7800X3D with a 7900XT so it's not like my system couldn't handle these games. I ended up going back to Windows and just setting up auto login with Steam set to launch in big picture mode automatically which in my opinion gets as close to a console experience as possible with my games just working on windows. I'll be keeping an eye out on the development of ChimeraOS as I think it's an interesting project but for now I'll be sticking with Windows.

I use three monitors on my PC (one 4k 27" and two 3440x1440 ultrawides) if i increased the scailing on my main 27" screen the two other displays would increase too and it would be really bad since all the UI stuff would be uneccesarily larger than necesary. Also, freesync seems to not work very well, i have a 160hz 4k panel and my games would be pretty choppy on the latest mesa divers (im running a 5900x and 6900xt with 64gb of ram). it was because of this that i decided to reinstall windows 11. i could go without freeesync and just cap my monitor to 60hz cuase i dont really game much, but the display scailing was really annoying for office woek and stuff like that.

As soon as I installed CS2, I got myself in a vortex of bugs and errors that I didn't even know where to start. - The audio was buzzing so bad (never had this issue on Windows) - The mouse sensitivity wouldn't be stable (X axis worked properly, Y axis was like glitched). Never experienced something like this. - The in game animations would stutter without a reason (never had this issue on Windows) - Display frequency in video settings was capped at 120Hz (my monitor has 144Hz). I mean, perhaps Linux Mint wasn't the best choice for gaming, but I never imagined, it would have been so bad (gaming-wise). My system is also full AMD, so compatibility should be skyrocketing. Anyways, maybe I'll have better luck with another distro like Arch or Nobara.

the question of which OS (linux vs windows) is better for gaming is not determined by performance. it's determined by which OS is used more. as of december 2023, for desktop and laptop computers, Microsoft's Windows is the most used at 69%, followed by Apple's macOS at 21%, and Google's ChromeOS at 3.7% (in the US up to 7.9% ), and desktop Linux at 3.2%, so on traditional PCs Linux sums up to 7% share. although this statistics isn't very accurate (it's from wikipedia which mentions why it's not accurate) it is accurate enough to conclude that windows is used far more than linux. this causes the game developers to focus their attention on windows rather than linux. many developers are now developing for both windows and linux but plenty of developers are still developing for windows only and as far as i know, there are no developers that develop for linux only. performance becomes irrelevant if the game you want to play is not available on linux. this reason alone is enough to declare windows as the victor for a very long time if not forever.

So I don't put much stock in benchmarks. The benchmarks might say one thing, but my lived experience is what matters. Being able to test a game out before investing $70+ is critical.

It should be rather embarrassing for one of the biggest companies in the world but their choice to pack in endless bloat and telemetry services is a cost that is only being revealed with the continuing drop in Windows desktop market over the last 10 years over to mobile only, Chromebook, Mac, Linux. It means people are waking up and beginning to choose these alternatives. The anti-cheat thing is the only remaining true hurdle, but I'm sure that's on the list.

I was able to install all of my software and apps that I normally use, and they work at a much faster speed. for instance, blender render times where cut literally in half, for the SAME scene. Now, the only issue I have experienced: I still cannot use SteamVR on zorin OS, I even tried to use steam link on my quest, but it just didnt work. this is the last standing issue before I uninstall windows for ever.

One of the big issues is the state of NVidia drivers proprietary or OSS with Wayland as I suspect Valve are doing a lot with Games-cope so need access to the GPU driver. The Intel OSS drivers still have a few things left to sort out too. I suspect it’ll be another year+ so before all three GPU (in reality just NVidia) manufacturers OSS drivers are offering the same quality

It's good to see that Linux is catching Windows for gaming. That gives me hope that one day I can drop Windows for Linus for gaming and content creation. Turning off all the go-fast bits though, I feel, skews the benchmarks in favour of Linux (deactivating Super Resolution, Anti-lag and Boost). It's like having a running race but "in the spirit of fairness", one of the runners has their legs tied behind their back and has to run using their lips. I mean, if I saw 49FPS on a 5800X with 32Gb 3600 RAM and a 5800X in Starfield - which is very close to my gaming PC specs - I'd be worried that someone stole my GPU and switched it out with a GTX 1030. As I said though, I can't wait for Linux to catch Windows in terms of compatibility and performance in gaming. Then I can dump this OS
