Linux for Hackers Tutorial (And Free Courses)

You need to learn Linux. I've said this for a very long time. Occupy The Web says the same thing - if you want to learn hacking, you need to lean Linux. This is a fundamental skill.

the courses by your website and Chuck vs Jupiter, how to best understand their differences? and where best to start? Jupiter or the ones you provide., is a lot of courses everywhere today... I am also on CodeCademy and and also added Chuck's 52 weeks Python... But feel the path is lost due to overload as a beginner... what to sit down with ? I know some basic python , html from Codecademy ... but how to focus in on the right corses so one end up able to work with hacking and not just taking every course out there?! I am renting a MacBook Pro 64 gh Bram now, I guess it was or is a really stupid idea to rent it, but I could not afford 2 tb and 64 gb ram.. but now I have space for both virtual machines and video editing etc... thanks for getting back when possible! Cheers, from Sweden

OTW: "Theres a lot of in-depth Linux books, but nobody reads those books" He's exactly right, ive been learning Linux for 2 years and never wasted my time reading a Linux book thats full of everything because I know at the end I would understand nothing. I bought "Linux Basics for Hackers" honestly just to support OTW. Didnt think I would make it past the first chapter. I finished it in two days. And it has been invaluable; and also just a good experience because you can tell he has a passion for this Linux, just as I do now.

I really appreciate your effort in making quality, easily understood videos about this cybersecurity topic! Thank you! I like these tricks like grep and other useful basic skills tutorials, I guess it's useful for even more experienced users too (practice makes perfect). I like to hear more about the "talk it about later" topics (eg user and service management, which are the common services (eg ssh)). I think it could be a good memo for "normal" Linux users too to detect/avoid attacks or any other misconfiguration problem in their system.

I look forward to more of these. Thank you. I have this book, and am fairly proficient with Linux and BASH, but there are still nuggets in the video that help clarify some things. For example, I didn't get the real difference between 'service' and 'systemctl', so it was helpful to hear that the latter is just a newer, better, way of managing services.

I have been working on the Networking side of things and wanted to go deep into Linux.. been working on it... and now with the video(s) things are looking very clear. So because of the fourth video...and the now the other video's, i have ordered the books that David has been holding up... I have some knowledge of Linux, but still, this video gave me a refreshing view and some tiny information I didn't know, and that gives me more confidence when using Linux. It's a great and very comprehensive course for those who are new to Linux, in terms of explaining and showing the fundamentals of Linux in a basic way.

I have Kali setup on a laptop with some VMs on it for targets and some running on a Proxmox server to target over my network. I thought itd be a more well rounded setup and sounds like it was a good idea. I am nowhere near the level you guys are but I am a long time Linux user that is fascinated with ethical hacking and this is some great information.I didnt know that different versions of Kali were like that or that I shouldve kept my old Backtrack images.

There's a few issues with this book that I really feel need to be highlighted: * Snort is no longer in the Kali repos since its been deprecated for quite awhile now making one of the chapters impossible to follow with present day Kali * The recommendation of using pip install is a really bad practice that's even warned against in the recent blog posts for Kali 2023. * The recommendation of adding Ubuntu or PPA repositories for extra software is a big big nono and specifically mentioned NOT to do in Kali's own documentation because it will break your system's ability to update: these things really should be addressed and highlighted and I would encourage you to recommend an update or 2nd Edition revision to correct these glaring flaws. Outside of that I don't really have other issues with the book but beginners and people new to Kali NEED to be aware of these downsides to the book. My comment keeps getting deleted so I've removed the reference links to prove what I'm saying about python and adding 3rd party repositories to be accurate but this can be verified on the Kali website in the recent blog posts and in the official Kali documentation

I ran into the same issue with snort. You can install it, its just a bit of a process and can be off putting for a total beginner. However, figuring it out will teach you a lot of new Linux skills. Also, doing research and applying it is a big part of "hacking" and IT working in general.

I think you don't need to add the Ubuntu repo to your primary source list....you can add it to the complimentary source list you can create yourself in the sources.lists.d folder
