In this video we will discuss file and directory ownership as well as permission in details.
By default, when a file or directory is created in Linux, the user who created it becomes the owner of that file or directory. The owner can then grant permissions to other users or groups to access and modify the file or directory.
Every file and directory on your Unix/Linux system is assigned 3 types of owner.
For example:- User, Group, Other.
In Linux, file and directory permissions are set using a set of permission bits that define the access rights for the owner of the file or directory, members of the file or directory's group, and all other users. The permission bits are represented by a 10-character string, with the first character representing the type of the file or directory, and the remaining nine characters representing the permissions.
For Example:-
Read, Write, Execute
You can use the 'chmod' command which stands for 'change mode'. Using the command, you can set permissions (read, write, execute) on a file/directory for the owner, group and other user.
There are 2 ways to use the command -
1. Absolute mode(numeric mode)
2. Symbolic mode
For changing the ownership of a file/directory, you can use the chown command.
