    I love how natural their conversations are. It's like they completely forget there's a camera in front of them and they're just shooting the shit, having fun with a video game, like best friends should.

I enjoy taking time out of my day to assist him when his gets discouraged about certain puzzles or can’t find a key or chest and I get a chance to bond with my boy playing something that was a key building block in my gaming history. 🤘🤩

    I'm close to agreeing there, but I tend to switch back and forth. I always think I like MM better, and then go back and play OoT and the fact that there's so many more temples and adult Link, it just seems like there's so much more to it. But then being able to play as a Zora and a Goron..... Too much good to pick between the two.

    James articulates a lot of how I feel concerning how I am with my favorite game; that being Link's Awakening. That game was bundled with the Game Boy shortly after it came out and I got it for Christmas. The way James described A Link to the Past is exactly how Link's Awakening sort of came to choose me to favor it the most.

    10:35 james, you hit the nail on the head.. Mass Effect came out right after my mom passed away, and I remember sitting on the floor in the large living room late at night that winter, just playing Mass Effect, getting lost in the story and world, forgetting everything else for but a moment's ease of mind. Now, whenever i see scenes of that game, hear Fem-Shep's voice, or hear the galaxy map theme, it has an automatic memory association to so many things in that period of time in my life as well, so it just became an immediate classic favorite game that won't ever change. Sure it was a great game on its own, but i didnt "choose" it as my favorite game, it chose me, at the precice right time when i needed such an experience.

    Mike was talking about people who weren't into Zelda. I definitely was, back then, up through Ocarina of Time or so. When I got a Gamecube, I tried to play Wind Waker and it lost me, oddly because I'm the kind of gamer Mike claims to be: I like to spend a lot of time, explore thoroughly, etc. Wind Waker disillusioned me because I was constantly discovering challenges and side quests, at the end of which I would be rewarded with Rupees. This wasn't just now and then, either, I was constantly doing things hoping to find a tangible reward and I kept being handed money that I literally could not carry because the limited wallet was full. Why was my wallet constantly full? Because there's no reason to spend money in the game. There is pretty much nothing of true value that you can straight up buy that the plot hasn't already forced you to buy. I haven't played a newer Zelda game since, so I don't know how much that still holds true, but Wind Waker, critically acclaimed though it may be, broke me of the series. Link to the Past is the only one I still play now and then, actually. It's just so good. Enough story to keep you involved, real rewards for finding secrets and completing side quests, smooth control. It has it all, in much the same way Super Metroid had it all.

    Holy shit, has it already been 25 years? Crazy...Link to the Past is one of the game i play at least once a year and i've been doing so for a long time now. Yet it never lose its magic. Nowadays, when i play the game i tend to play it through a randomizer (changes treasure chest content, you could get the flippers in the first chest for example) but i think for the 25th anniversary i'll play through the game normally again. Thank you for playing this, James & Mike.

    I replayed Link to the Past a couple months ago. On this run, I used Mike's glitch where you can get to the dark world early. I skipped all the bosses until I had every dungeon's item (light and dark worlds), then returned afterwards to kill the bosses. It was a fun new way to play it. You can get the 3rd sword, then replace it with the Master Sword (2), then replace it again with the 3rd sword.

    For me, it will depend on how they carry over downloaded content from the Wii and Wii U. If they don't support a direct download, like they did from the Wii to the Wii U, or some sort of serious discount for such content, I may be done supporting Nintendo. They need to stop attempting to make the same money 10 times. They need more than a few franchise characters to compete in a world of better hardware and dozens of excellent software teams.

    Link Between Worlds is so overrated. It's so easy and simple. It has no charm of its own so it has to rely on its prequel to trick people into thinking it's good, but it's not. The dungeons and the overworld suck. It's an ok game, but certainly doesn't add anything to the franchise.

    It's crazy that Shigeru Miyamoto used his childhood memories playing outside as inspiration for The Legend of Zelda, because Ocarina of Time inspired me to go on adventures in my neighborhood when I was a kid. I wanted to be like Link, running through the bushes and beneath the trees with a plastic shield and a wooden sword. It's like there is an indirect thread between his experience and mine, connecting us through the years and over continents with a video game.

    OTBWY I know it's fan-made, but I still consider it a Metroid game because it has everything an official Metroid game would have. And I don't mean it has Samus Aran, and a bunch of other Metroid enemies, I mean it plays the way a Metroid game does; it has a minute amount of story focus like Metroid does. Over all it's everything Metroid was from the beginning and everything Nintendo has forgotten about Metroid.

    Who cares if it's unofficial, Nintendo never felt like making a good Metroid game themselves since Zero Mission and we're overdue for a Metroid 2 remake anyway. Now with Zero Mission, AM2R then Super and Fusion as they are now, the original quadrology of the franchise is perfect.

  • @SirHickory

    @SirHickory

    UltimaKeyMaster Personally I wouldn't say since Zero Mission, I would say since Prime 3; but Zero Mission was definitely the last Metroid game before the subtle decline of Prime, then sheer drop of Other M. I don't know how Nintendo is so blind and deaf to the cry's of their fans, but I hope they take off their blinders soon; because with every turd they slap the Metroid name on, the ball of white hot hatred in my stomach grows another millimeter in diameter. And eventually it's either going to kill me from the sheer stress levels, or it's going to explode all over some innocent bystanders. Then I'll have to make some retarded case in court about how my anger over a video game made me do it, and nobody want's to see that in the news.

I can breeze through without a single death and collect everything in about the space of a single afternoon fairly effortlessly. I agree. The boss fight with Mothula in Skull Woods is the only real challenge in the game, and by then you have three bottles of life restoring assistance. LttP has pretty simple gameplay--once you memorize the dungeons and item locations, the game is breeze. And for those saying that's true of all Zelda games: no, it's not. The 3-D games are far too long and tedious to ever be a "breeze" (even though they aren't difficult). And no matter how many times you play through Zelda 1 and Zelda 2, those final dungeons will kick. Your. ASS. Blue Wizzerobes and Blue Fokkas can die in hell.

  • @bucwhovian8305

    @bucwhovian8305

    frozenaorta I still find most of the bosses in any Zelda game pretty easy. Gannon at the end of LttP is one of the few I still find challenging. Sure the game is earier once you know where to go and what to do. I don't just think that's true of all Zelda games, I think that's true of all games PREIOD. I always found the NES games way too hard (how did kids ever cope with playing them, with no walkthroughs to look up?). LttP got a good balance of hard stuff and easy stuff that is still fun. Also game being far too long and tedious doesn't they can't also be easy, not that I really think that of any of the Zelda games myself.

  • @frozenaorta

    Buc Whovian Word of mouth helped a lot with the NES games. We talked a lot on the bus and at school, so everyone knew that you needed to play the whistle at the lake to open Level 7. Nintendo Power was also HUGE back then. I don't think enough reviewers emphasize just how popular and helpful it was. We didn't have the internet, but we had that magazine and the "tip line" to call that everyone's parent's HATED. Haha. It was not cheap to call. But more importantly, most games back then were more about skill and twitch reflex than "figuring out what to do." Maps for games like Metroid were incredibly helpful, but we usually just preferred cheat codes and stuff. I should also humbly add that we were just better gamers back then. I know that sounds like a humblebrag, but we were weened on those games--we HAD to become good to play shit like Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Mega Man, Contra, Zelda 2, etc. And keep in mind, you didn't beat every game back then. These days, you expect to finish every game you buy--they're designed to be played "through." In the NES days, you fucking "conquered" games. It was a big deal to beat a game. Most of the games you played you never came close to finishing. Anyway, agreed on Link to the Past. Lol. Got a little carried away there rambling. Sorry!

    Biggest aspect, when you're talking about difficulty, what "a link to the past" really nailed is the ramping up. It gets progressively harder on a very natural curve, you never meet an insurmountable roadblock. It's pretty much seamless, you learn as you play and the game gets harder as you learn. Genius. As for "liking" zelda, I gotta say I never got into the 3d games, they started getting platformy and more actionney I think, and I liked the Zelda 1/aLttP formula better. Just my opinion of course.

I remember hearing that Nintendo was going to be working with Universal Studios to put an area for them in their theme parks and it just reminded me of how much I'd love a Disney style park where it's just ALL Nintendo so you could travel to the different lands like Mushroom Kingdom, Popstar from Kirby, one of the many worlds for Metroid or Star Fox, and most awesomely...Hyrule from LoZ..ooh two castles, Peach's and Zelda's could be centerpieces for each area so you could visit Hyrule Castle Town. I still would love something like this but chances of it are low.

I don't really have a decent explanation as to why, but there has just always been a huge disconnect with me and this series to where I'm bored by and uninterested in the whole experience. Then I get to be that guy who gets annoyed by feeling like the whole thing is inescapable - You know when you're not into a game or a movie or a TV show and everyone keeps banging on about how great it is? And you don't even deny that it probably is great, but because you're not into it, it starts to feel like a personal affront to you and your tastes, even though it really isn't? The controls just feel clunky, sometimes the game is too slow other times is too fast and sometimes it feels like the buttons don't respond. I went to back Budokai 3 a lot of times, trying to play it and see what's so great about it, but I just couldn't get into it. It's weird though, I do like fighting games like Smash Bros, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom and I also like Dragon Ball but I can't get into DBZ Budokai 3.

    Friendly correction that Metroid was design by Gunpei Yokoi, and not Miyamoto. Love the vid, tho. Chrono Trigger when?

    Gunpei produced the game but he did NOT design it or direct it. Hiroji Kiyotake created Samus visualy. Hiroji Kiyotake, Makoto Kano, Hiroji Kiyotake and Hirofumi Matsuoka were all the designers.

    +lMrFresno559l He's listed as one of the designers. was also head of R&D 1 IIRC g.co/kgs/PXCB5L That said, he didn't do it alone by any stretch. I can see why just saying he did it would be considered misleading.

    Nintendo Power ran an awesome Zelda: Link to the Past comic by Shotaro Ishinomori, they released it by itself as an oversize book, I got it for $15 at Walmart. Every Zelda fan should have it.

    I honestly think Zelda might have taken inspiration from the Movie Legend (1985). I could be off base, but I see great similarities.

    I like this angle of Zelda game, so Oracle series next? P.S.: I'm weird, but if this were Megaman, I'd be backwards, I prefer 3d to 2d on that one, despite it being 2nd hand.

    I assume by 3D, you mean the Legends games, and not X7. I always felt the Legends games were pretty solid, but thought that Megaman never really transitioned as well as Zelda or Mario. Did a heck of a lot better than Castlevania, though, that's for sure.

    What Mike said about picking his favorite video game is exactly how I feel. There are so many good games that it's really hard to choose just one. It really all depends on what I'm in the mood for and what I'm playing at the time. The most that I can narrow it down would be my favorite game franchise or series.

    256 total at once, not per sprite. And just because you can have 8 colors on a sprite, doesn't mean you might not only use 4 to save storage space or reduce processing time.

    How to pick a favorite, have a game meet these two criteria: 1) you got great joy from it. 2) you would replay it. there are some games that I really enjoyed, but I wouldn't replayed it again. That's why I wouldn't call them my favorite.

    haha, Mike.. "haha I will send you to the dark world link!" way to end on that little gem of a line. I was too young when I started playing this game I think and I couldn't figure out a lot of things so I wasn't able to complete it. But I still had very fond memories of it.

    A Link to the Past has got to be one of the greatest. I remember as a kid going to the EB Electronics store at the mall, and there was a line out the door of kids playing the Link to the Past demo the store had set up.
