Nobody told me about this parallel universe...
This is a clip from my playthrough of an older mod made by MelonSpeedruns. I'm a big fan of the castle layout, but I wish it had some custom music.

I was expecting something like just slapping Link into the Mario 64 map but actually recreating the layout of Bob-Omb Battlefield with Ocarina of Time's camera system, textures and models is much more impressive. And I like the way that it adds unique Zelda game mechanics like having to blow up rocks with bombs to make it through. It actually feels like a level that could plausibly exist in Ocarina of Time that feels well designed and playable rather than just superimposing one game on top of another.

Not just that, but the earliest versions of OOT were using paintings to teleport to different locations from within Hyrule Castle. And the old Hyrule Castle dungeon got repurposed as the Forest Temple later in development, retaining the focus on paintings throughout. So even more poetic, it is a return to form both from origins of the engine and from the earliest iterations of the game's development.

This mod is cool because the original concept for Ocarina of Time was going to play out like Super Mario 64 where Link goes to Gannon's Castle and enter paintings that warps him to different parts of Hyrule. I love how this isn't just trying to be a one for one remake, it is actually adjusting the maps and challenges to be more compatible with Link's abilities and movement. I'm not sure it would be possible to do everything from Mario 64 this way, but I would love to see someone attempt to expand this out and bring over as much as possible. Probably would work better if Majora's Mask was used, since the Zora mask would be the only way to really do the water levels right.

I won’t lie, I was genuinely impressed by that boss fight against the giant mad scrub. Excellent job!

Hey there! Thanks for making the video about my old mod. I might finish it one day, who knows. I'm slowly getting ideas to start it again...

This mod almost did happen in real life with the team wanting to do it in just a castle which would have been horrific. I’m thankful they went the open world route

This was a lot better than i was expecting. I wish I had the talent to make a rom hack, because I could see the entire game being made in this fashion.

Apparently OOT was originally going to have a Mario 64 style Hub World with Ganon's castle and you could go through the paintings to reach different parts of Hyrule. They swapped this out for the more open ended adventure in the final version; honestly the best choice as it works much better and was more innovative. The Phantom Ganon fight in the Forest Temple which incorporates paintings is a relic of this.
