good use of the movements, BUT one thing, when you open the standard out, Push the side buttons on the focus rail, and RETRACT the top rail, into the camera back, stops the standard from derailing off of the tracks, as there's no gap to fall into :-) , also it is kinder on the guide parts below the standard track, so as to keep it in good condition.

Hi Nico--I just picked up a Technika iii and a Kardan color. I've never used a Linhof before, and this video was absolutely perfect as a tutorial, although I did-very gently-figure a couple of these movements out on my own; to be honest, I was terrified I would break something right away, and so watching you helped tremendously! These are such beautiful machines. I am in awe. If I knew nothing about photography, I would probably own one just because it is a lovely object. The fact that the design informs the function is another level of beauty, though. Can't wait to shoot with it! THANK YOU.

Really enjoy your videos. They are very helpful. Just got into Large Format. Would love to have a Linholf Technika. It is truly a beautiful machine, but hey, I'm retired and I am on a budget. Just picked up on a trade for a couple of duplicate Zeiss Jena lenses a Busch Pressman Model D 4x5. I love it. In some ways the Model D looks like very similar to the Technika and does most of the same things like the revolving back and front movements. There are no front swing and rear movements, which are very useful but I am thinking I could live without them. Did find something though that the Linholf doesn't have, the wire action finder. This afternoon, I was on the shoreline of Lake Huron at the Tip of Michigan's Thumb. It was really cold. The wind was blowing like crazy, the waves were crashing over the break wall and freezing up. The geese and swans were just trying to keep a little warm as they fished for lunch. Obviously, couldn't set up the tripod. Tried to use the optical finder - worked OK but the wind was still biting. What I did find worked perfect was the wire action finder. Haven't developed the film yet, but I believe I got a flock of geese taking off over the ice. Sometimes the most basic works the best.

I have a Master Technika Classic but my understanding is that the MT2000 has a focusing lever inside the body of the camera so that the front standard can be mounted on the internal rail for allowing focus with very short focal length lenses. I’ve never seen a good shot of this mechanism. I’d really be interested in seeing how that works. (As far as I know the MT3000 has a knob on the side to adjust the internal rail.)

Hi Lars. See the following video from Paula Pell-Johnson (the managing director of the UK Linhof dealer) demonstrating that very mechanism (at about the 8 min mark): kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqWXkruFoqvVe5M.html As you say, the MT3000 has a focusing knob on the side of the body to control the wide angle focusing, rather than the lever of the MT2000. thanks Nico, was wondering if the 405 holder would fit onto the 4x5 format back of the technikas; one tip, ALL tecknika style cameras can use this 4X5 back (with a reducing back) to take roll film/4x5" sheet film holders ( if you have the GROUND- Glass back); no issue if you have a 5x7 or 8x10, think everything monorail, but the techno can take this as well, Techno is linhof version of cambo actis system, BUT can take film as well as digital MF & 35 mm Dslr's, just need the lens board to fit the standards!!

It's a good habit to pull the bed back to the front standard and then pull it. Linhof's front standard break very easily if slammed into the bed repeatedly. It's repairable but it will run you a couple hundred bucks.

When you extend the bellows long enough you said the 50 MM lens turned into a 30MM. Or basically a "longer" lens. Is that correct. And if so then you would have to compensate on your exposures because of the bellows "draw"? Correct? Thanks.Je

Linhofs can still be bought for less than 1K USD. They’re relatively heavy but more solid than most and have formidable extension. I’ve had a few in 6x9 cm and 4x5 and all were precise and had good original bellows. The 2000 and 3000 have a nifty internal focus within the body which will focus a 35, 38 or 47 mm lens. They have their quirks but I roll with them. Better made than Leica and better engineered. The Master Technikas have a superb RF. It’s more useful than one might think.

one other feature, common to later 3000 models, is a second Larger knob on the box, this is a wide-angle focus track, the "storage track", is movable on these models, so a 65mm lens can be focused, without the bellows set for this purpose (used on all models, tech iii and onwards, which don't have this knob); 5x7" technikas of later models, have this knob to, a real time saver, and weight saver, as these are 1.4 Kg's in their own right, let alone having to add 700g or more of accessories to it.

You pulled it out wrong. I think there are two spring buuton on the right side of the rail which you can use to move the front rail in the case to transport out the front standard. The way you've done you have a chance to destroy the rail. There is an other video ob KZread which is explaining it right. Maybe I'm also wrong and your model does not have this option, but i think i can see these two springs.

To emphasize few of the camera features that make Technika special: - Extension: double extension refers to bellows that extend to twice the normal focal length of a standard lens, i.e 300 mm for 4×5. Triple extension would be therefore around 450mm. Pulling the back of the MT2000 adds about 35mm giving a total extension of about 435m. One can imagine the possibilities for macro. The Technika V 5x7 gives you an extension of 580mm which is insane with a 4x5 reducing back. - Wide angle lenses: the MT2000 allows wide angle lenses down to 72m. 58/47/38mm can be used with special lens boards. - Infinity stops: they can be set for several lenses and allow quick setup of the camera at infinity - The MT3000 which is the last version has a knob allowing more precise focusing for Wide Angle lenses, an additional bed drop and 3 stop calibrated cam to use 58/47/38mm lenses at infinity - MT with Range finder also uses cams which means each lens can be setup to work speedily with the rangefinder

Blacken Blue I have seen film time commercial photographers using this for product photography like watches or industrial parts. Some of them share their work in online groups. If you mean fine art, it’s a good question. I would need to think and search. Another crazy use of extension could be for telephoto pictures like the ones from Reinhart Wolf (he used a Sinar).

one tip, the lens standard must be pulled out, with the bed at full retracted position, to allow the track to engauge correctly; this is detented deliberately, the rear is for 'wide angle' and the front for 'telephoto' designed lenses (specifically designed to allow this with the bed extension limitations - aka fit a 350 mm lens with only 280 mm infinity distance from film plane, or in the wide case, allowance the other way). tip the bellows are extremely soft pleated for this exact purpose, to allow both long ext. and facillitate movements close in to the rear standard.

Meaning: Damn, they are actual competition. ...and vs. other brands' owners: 2) "Nah, c'mon, let me show you how my 50yo-look-like-whatever Linhof still snaps into center position on all the movements!" ... meaning: Your [put-brandname-here] just sucks, that's why I can charge double from customers who are willing to pay for the camera brand. one tip, the 15 & 30 degree bed fall is NOT for in-direct rise, it is to allow the MEDIUM and EXTREME wide angle lenses to NOT see the bed, as the focal length/angle of coverage is so vast, 15 deg. is for 90 mm (4x5" format=~28mm in 35mm format)wides , ~120mm 4x5" format is 35mm in 35 format, the 30 deg. is for 65mm (4x5" format=~16 or 17mm in 35mm format!!{just borderline not fish_eye}); BUT for the 65 and down you DO definately need the focussing attachment ( bellows which interposes between the front standard and the lens board) as on the 4x5 technika there is NO focusing, as the standard is retracted into the "home" or storage rack, so this adaptor IS the focus track!!The 5x7" models (technika V {five}), have a focus pinion on the body, as the "home" position has a top track too, this does NOT apply for older technika iii {three} models {1965}and earlier, they only have a 15 degree drop_bed, and NO focus pinion; these are 90mm lens LIMITED, can't physically fit a wider lens, like the "architecture" cameras, but this is for STD focal length and up, still has the 650mm triple extension capacity!!

Andy; the “Texas Leica” is a term used about the big Fuji coupled range finders. Texas because “bigger than anything else” Leica because those are the best known rangefinders. Nico is calling this “the Leica of Large Format cameras” because Leica are renowned for their superb engineering and build quality in 35mm cameras, and Linhof are renowned for their superb engineering and build quality too. So “Texas Leica” - very big rangefinder camera vs “large format Leica” - very precise engineering

A Linhof Technika is precision equipment for professional photographers. Its facility is far greater than that of any wooden camera. Yes, the Chamonix is finely crafted for discerning amateurs whose requirements are very simple, by comparison. However, I bought a very good Technika V and had it completely overhauled by the factory in Munich. The total cost, including the original purchase price and factory upgrades, was cheaper than a new Chamonix. If you would like to buy into the Linhof quality, there are several good deals coming up on eBay all the time. I suggest you don't go as early as the Technika III from the 1950s because there were significant design changes in the Technika IV which allow greater integration into the entire system including today's accessories. Ideally, either a Master Technika Classic (with rangefinder), or a Master Technika 2000 or 3000, (with added features to accommodate very short focal length lenses) Cheers, Kevin.

@@kevin-parratt-artist Thanks for your advise. Yes a Technika V or newer would be nice. It seems there are a lot technikas in Japan. But at the moment i wait what Covid will do in the next months. If the business stay so bad this year, there is no money left for such nice "toys"

@@SD_Alias Indeed. I have been stuck in the Philippines since March 2020. My studio with all the Linhof and Hasselblad gear, is in Thailand. I do fear for its condition now.

The controls on my Super Technika IV 5X7 seem much more intuitive (a knob to control rise and fall, for example), but maybe because I'm so used to them. One more thing: we are not like Leica owners. We are not anything like Leica owners.

They switched from knob to lever to make it easier to use rise with wide angles when the front standard is inside the body

Looks like an absolutely amazing piece of engineering, though I don’t think I could justify the vast cost increase over my little Toyo.

Same thing here, its amazing, but I dont see the reasons (unless I had the money) to change cameras. But it is really nice!

Rangefinder version (Master) would be nice, otherwise go for Horseman 45FA....same camera, which still gets you out to 360mm (Nikor 360 T) on ext board....lot less $, less weight, built as good.

I have it and it’s horrible to use. So many tiny buttons and levers, my finger tips and nails are a mess after a few minutes. Honestly the worst camera I own and I am so unhappy and ashamed at spending a ton. I even sent it off to a linhoff certified repair shop in nyc for a CLA and it came back the same. Everything is super stiff and hard to Maneuver.
