LINES OF LOCOMOTIVES - Stored Engines in Thomaston, GA
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Sleeping giants, static steel stallions, isolated iron horses - whatever you want to call them, these locomotives are not out on the mainline pulling trains. Instead, they're being stored in Thomaston, Georgia, awaiting their fate.

Railroads who store locomotives long-term, often remove the horn off of the roof so that they are not stolen. In some cases they’re put inside the cab in other cases they’re put in the housing of the locomotive next to the air compressor. I know that UP Will store them in a railside box car or warehouse.

@@NERRP2017 Railfan and horn collectors find the horns that actually came off of a locomotive to be more desirable. To say that this horn came off of NS 2739 or KCS 3939 gives it history, actual railroading history. And the owner would be able to point at the horns in pictures of the units in service and say "there is MY horn".

Yep NS drops them off for CPR to pickup. CPR's lone Geep has to move them in blocks due to the sheer dead weight.
I do know that over the summer metra rail in Chicago approved the purchase of used engines to replace it's older engines and to increase its engines on hand. Hope this is where they are going

Great video! I've heard that the MACs may return to KCS rails after a maximum of 3 years after the CP-KCS merger is complete, but that may not happen. As for the M-2s, several may end up being sold off to smaller lines, a few have already been delivered to the New Brunswick Southern.

The Southern Belle Has To Be In My Top 2 Favorite Locomotive Paint Jobs
I noticed them a few weeks ago driving thru there. I didn't have the time to stop by.
I used to drive to work along the KCS line thru north Dallas back in the 90s. I found it interesting that the first Southern Belle schemes I saw were I believe SD 45s or something. The SD70s were still grey ghosts at the time. I caught a TFM loco once and had to hunt one down in HO scale. I guess KCS started rebuilds of the 45s before the 70s.
Wow What A Sight!! I agree Southern Belle paint is one of the best! Great Video! Thanks..
The majority of the SD70M-2s are billed for scrap. A few are still in the process of being sold or trying to be sold. As for the MACs, a few are set to return to KCS at some point while the rest will remain on PRLX for their SD70MAC-H rebuilds for metra or scrapped. KCS has already got back some of their old MACs as well, and spray painted the KCS lettering on the hood of their own locos.
This reminds me of the Iowa Traction RR in Mason City. Union Pacific pays them to store rolling stock on the old trolley lines

Just wow those engines very cool
I visited this spot yesterday. Most units had horns inside the cab and were placed either in the back behind the engineer’s seat or down in the nose. Some of the units were unlocked and we were able to sit in the engineer’s seat. Most of the numberboards for these units were either gone or broken, and some of the six-axle units’ windows were broken out. Some of the road switchers’ windows were broken out as well. Some units had graffiti, and other units actually had doors taken off and parts missing from the interior where the engine is. I’m assuming people sometimes take the metal from these locomotives and use it as scrap metal to get some extra cash, but who really knows. All I know is that these locomotives make for really neat photos.
Awesome! Keep up the great work

It's too bad that you didn't get all the Locomotive numbers before their hauled off to their new destination. I'm a Model Railroader, & have a lot of SSW, SP, SPSF, D&RGW, BNSF, & many more... I look for accuracy, & that every locomotive & car, are authentic, on my lines, but I do have a few that are fantasy ("What if it did happen!" types & If only types!) So if you could, when going out & seeing these Locomotives that are stored, some of us would love to have the road numbers, for us whom are handicapped, & can't go anywhere 😔! Thank you for your videos, as I am a rail fan, & I like, & love trains. If you see an SSW, D&RGW, or SP... It was all owned by Southern Pacific Lines before it's merger in 1996! I'm sure most people that visit train channels are aware, but for those that aren't: PRLX is basically a "used car dealer" for locos (they may have other rolling stock too, but I am not aware of any offhand). They do sales, leasing and parting out. They do not have a livery of their own so it's not uncommon to see a loco in factory paint with the name and reporting marks painted over and the PRLX mark spray painted on the side. It's a little crude, but hey it's cheap.

PRLX actually did have a paint scheme of their own... It was used on the SD70AH-T4's demonstrators several years ago while they were being leased out to KCS.They used a nice livery on some worthless units that were based on already failed units...

The SD70M-2s are back in service on NS
Stored or ditched? The terrible situation.
Nice job.
It’s sad to see this kind of thing. The UK has its fair share of loco storage yards (Crewe, Leicester, Loughborough) , where there’s lines and lines of Class 56/60 diesel-electrics from the 1970s/1980s displaced by the Class 66 in the late 90s. Crewe sidings also have a few Class 90 AC electric locos stored. In a sorry state, but stored.
Nice and why does kcs not use them
There used to be a huge number of engines in Arizona but recent Google Earth images reveal the area to be free of any engines. At one time the line of engines was miles long totaling way more than 100 but they are all now gone.
Correction. All KCS MAC's were EX TFM except 3974 (Ex BNSF 8945) Which was traded from BNSF in exchange for one of their MAC's BNSF wrecked on their Rails, also only 75 were built, TFM 1600 -1674 which were built in London Ontario

if the engines were missing their horns, it makes me wonder if some or all of the internal equipment we can't see has also been removed from them. Parts would last longer if kept in secure storage where thieves have a much harder time getting at them. While it's not often talked about, there are people who will steal valuable parts for their metal content. It's just a fact of life. Hopefully that's not happening here.
Miss seeing those KCS MACs roaming around my area. Especially the ghosts.
I think we should preserve the NS SD70M-2'S.

@jordansewell8790
2 жыл бұрын
@@mauricesmith8545 Spot on but that Metra plan has been on & off to my knowledge. One day someone will make up their minds. Some could be up there already.
Most of these engines are not outfitted with PTC hardware and so they are at best B-units. They also fall below Tier 4 emissions compliance which means they are due for a rebuild before they can hit the road. So with all the work needed to update them it was cheaper to discard them at scrap value to Progress Rail who will likely convert them into the next Genset series of engines.
@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606
Жыл бұрын
That’s only for new locomotives, older locomotives and trucks are grandfathered into compliance, most states only require tier 2 compliance so these units could still be used, but yes they lack PTC and cannot be used in territory with PTC
Oh so this is where those long lines of SD70M2s went.
i was up there not too long ago and we are pretty sure all the horns are stored in the cabs of the loco's.
I wonder if cp plans on doing anything with those stored KCS engines. I know progress rail was doing the paint for the other rebuilt CP sd70s. Correct me if I’m wrong tho!
RIP locos
I'm surprised they don't rebuild those KCS SD70s. NS rebuilt some 2700s into the 1800s. Maybe they just rebuild enough to keep Progress Rail afloat.
Hell all I have to do is walk out my front door and see the things, the red yellow & black ones at least.
I also have a question: why do most of the units have "PRLX" on them, and why are some of the units (NS) the behind logo is blacked out? Are some of these units leasers?

Hola quería saber que paso con esas sd70mac de kcs si siguen hay o si las recuperado la nueva cpkc 👀
It’s so strange watching railroads in 20 years literally storing dash 9 models, 70macs, etc. they barely feel used
If it has PRLX, "do not fuel" on the fuel tank, and no horn, that's probably bad news.
There's NS SD70M-2 #2707.
What will happen with all these engines?
I would think they are not 'stored'. They are a form of trash that a corporation doesn't want to deal with. I can imagine there might be an expense to getting rid of all these old locomotives. That expense is something for the future to deal with. For now, it is out of sight, out of mind. Tags left on some from their 'auction'? Does that mean they were sold for scrap to another company? If that company goes out of business the cleanup expense will become a public expense someday.
