Line 6 HX Stomp vs. Boss GX100. A Practical Comparison With Tone Samples

Ойын-сауық

In this video I discuss why I chose one over the other from a practical point of view. Both these units are within a similar price point but I think should be used differently.

I have a GX 100. Before this one I had a Line6 Pod Go. Both are great. But to use the BOSS is much better with the touchscreen!!! I found my sound, but it was longer time. The Line6 was very good, natural but not a big processor. The BOSS has more dynamic range and this is what I love!!!

I owned a Kemper for 5 years, then changed to a Line 6 Pod Go , the sound went build quickly and I was happy. Followed by the Fractal FM3, probably the best sound but terrible editing and audible latency when switching. Now I own a BOSS GX 100 and I have to say , the sound after editing (Post processing) and IR is fantastic , but most importantly without any latency or processor limitations. All the changes happen on the screen , although I bought the BT version. For me the Boss GX 100 is a fantastic thing and I enjoy playing it again!

I like the sound of the GX 100 better. I feel it reproduces the amp's behavior better. The Line 6 sound is a bit unnatural, has a narrower range, and is generally closer to the midrange. Well, sound is a matter of taste, so I can't say which one is right. As for updates, as others have said, the GX100 is capable of fine-tuning the sound, so there will be more than a few people who don't need updates. New amp models and effects are a combination of sounds, so to speak. Also, the GX100(or BOSS products in general) is inexpensive for the quality . It would be a bit much to ask a cost-effective product to be updated in the same way as an expensive one. As for size, the HX STOMP is certainly smaller and easier to handle. However, Andy calls himself a studio user, so I don't think there is any particular need to be concerned about size. A rack type like the Axe-Fx would be fine. In the end, though, it's best to use equipment that is easy to handle and that you like.

After using an HX Stomp and a POD Go, I switched to the GX and have never been happier. I find it much easier to dial in a tone that sounds and feels right to me. And I don't care at all about updates. If I were playing through a traditional amp and pedals, I wouldn't get updates. I'd have to buy more amps and pedals. I get a few tones I need and that's it. And I've been complimented on my tone at gigs several times by people who can't believe I'm not playing through a tube amp.

Thx for sharing. My take: the Boss slow dancer tone was killer. The rest ... too much reverb/?phase effect for me. Would love to hear your examples of relatively un-effected Fender, Vox, and Plexi tones from each, and how hard they were to achieve. Size doesn't matter if those basic tones are there, and if they're relatively easy to get to.

These are the tones I typically use on a day to day basis so just wanted to share what im comfortable using. I'll definitely make another video with less effects and more "straight into the amp like tones."

I use the Boss - I am a bass player (mostly) but when switching to the occasional rhythm or lead on a six string I can leave it plugged into my bass stack and it compensates brilliantly. Our rhythm guitar player uses a Line 6 POD. He loves it, I love my Boss. So 100% personal taste.

As the Stomp XL and GX-100 are currently priced the same, this is a hot topic. My current live rig is a GT-100 into the power amp return of a Katana MK2. I'm happy with it, but I'd like to get a smaller multi-effects unit. The Stomp XL looks good, and I like the idea of scenes, but I'd have to also have a pedal for volume control. The GX-100 is considerably smaller than the GT-100 and I'm already familiar with the Boss way of doing things. For me, the draw of the Stomp is the number of curated amps and drive pedals (which I probably don't need for my funk gig), though I'm pretty sure the raw materials for a variety of amp sounds are available in the GX. The GX has more blocks and has a much better rotary effect in my opinion. Still, it would be fun to mess around with the Stomp. Sound-wise, going into the power amp in, I doubt there would be much difference between the two.

The Helix is better supported and the editing on the device is more difficult on the Boss. I am torn because I fear the Boss might be heading to some kind of end of life, but the sounds to my ear are less "brittle". That being said, it feels like all the sounds are more brittle sounding on the Helix and all the sounds have trouble, from what I have heard in samples, are all dark ish - warm sounding. The helix has more sharp penetration, almost beyond "clarity" into a harshness. The Boss could possibly be trending towards somewhat dull. I want both qualities and sounds in one unit :)

They just launched and abandoned it slowly. Line 6 is really far superior in this regard. I have been a Boss user for almost 30 years. Soon, I will no longer be and will stop recommending the brand. Thank you for sharing your opinion! 🦾

You aren’t wrong about the updates. But at the same time I never understand the obsession with updates. These units come with dozens and dozens of amps. There are no other amp sounds needed. I get that people like updates and free stuff but there are no new “amp” sounds that come with updates. There are only so many clean or dirty sounds possible!

@@dryanbuchanan My friend, no problem disagreeing :-) However, updates are always signs of continuous improvements in a device that has a lot of room for evolution (and enormous possibilities, if Boss wanted it). Generally, people who like experimentation and pushing their equipment to the limit are the users most eager for updates. Wouldn't you like to try out a Dumble? A different Surh or Marshall, more complete and different Delays and Reverbs like those of the RV series (and regardless of how many amplifiers the GX has)? So, why does Line 6 differentiate itself in offering this to its users? Helix is over 10 years old and still being updated... If you are satisfied with the product you have in your hands at the moment, no problem :-) But I'm one of those people who use the device to the extreme, and I see no problem with always wanting more, especially when the GX has so much room for improvement and processing power available.

@@HeltonMoura Sure, if you just want more options, and obviously most people do, then by all means, get a unit with more amps available. My point is only that you can achieve ANY amp sound with the amps already in the boss unit that you could with 300 amp options from something like fractal. Sure, different effects can change the tone, but I’m talking about strictly raw amp sounds. It’s completely unnecessary to have so many models. You could take a fractal unit and find any amp sound you want, and it could be matched identically with an amp already in the boss.
