    When I play live, I use the helix for my electric guitar and I play pads off my iPad through the helix usb and send it down to FOH via the same xlr outputs my guitar uses so I don’t take up more channels on the mixer. In my home studio I use my helix as my 8 in 8 out interface to record guitars, vocals, and whatever else so that when I want to edit videos in post I have separate audio tracks to mix. One time I used my helix to play electric guitar and my bass player plugged in also to my helix and I sent both instruments down to FOH at the same time!

    Here are some of my tips to using the Helix effectively! I have had mine since launch as well, so I have made plenty of bad patches while trying to figure out how to use it! First, choose your amp and cab, and get a GREAT base tone. Don't just get a mediocre base tone, because everything else will only sound as good as your basic amp tone. Then, add one additional pedal or effect at a time and dial in that effect so that when it is activated, it sounds GREAT! Don't just load effects with factory settings and think it is going to sound amazing. With so many different amp models in the Helix, the effects must be tailored to the amp. It will take some time to get a great basic patch, so once you have a good basic patch, save it and back it up. Lastly, utilize snapshots! It will make performing with the Helix so much easier, particularly if you are singing and playing.

    One important thing to consider is to do some high and low cuts in your presets to have a good sound Live (I prefer to do this cuts in the Cab/IR Block). Another one is to have a Graphic EQ block near the end of the chain to compensate things like Fletcher Munson effect, adding some mids, lows or highs, if needed...

    Moving the looper to the front of your chain allows you to play a part of a song and then dial in the tone without playing

    This is one of the first things im going to do with my looper, is loop some riffs and then use that to dial in the sounds I'm after while the loop plays...

    Setting up your volume pedal after the looper you can simulate your volume on the guitar. Checking out your dynamic range. Though volume pots affect some eq too... Keep that in mind

    I've been serving at churches for 10 years now. I've owned several boutique pedals and several nice amps, but the Helix changed my life. I got one 3 years ago after seeing one of Brian's WT videos. I have not thought about a pedal or amp since then. The Helix sounds incredible. It's consistent and it's built like a tank. And they keep adding to it. It's the best investment I've made in my gear.

    Thank you brothers, really helpful I’m seriously considering the Helix floor and the information you have given is priceless. will check out the links. it’s sitting at just under eleven hundred (£] at a local store which I think is pretty good for what it does. I had fallen out with line 6 for a while I felt I purchased expensive gear and they forsake it after a year or two and move on to the next flagship item. I sold all my gear except my JTV 69 but they seem to have stuck with Helix so I’m nearly there. I’ve never been great at making guitar patches from scratch but this looks like it would be fun to learn to do it well and until you master it get the good sounds from the experts, and at my age it might be the last guitar fox I need to buy 😃. Thank you much appreciated, God bless.

    You should do a comparison with the Headrush Multi-Effects Pedalboard. In my opinion, the amp modeling with 3nd party IR's sound better than Helix and it is a lot cheaper than the Helix. The price difference of $500 is quite significant and allows for more people to get started with electric guitar for their church. Lower barrier of entry.

  • @ministryinsong
    @ministryinsong5 жыл бұрын

    That was a great video guys, you almost made me want one. Sadly I lost faith in Line 6. I had a lot of gear over the years from Pod to hd500 I had the full stagescape pa but I found they would really push the latest bit of gear and make you love it then about a year and they'd moved on to the next big thing. That would not have been a problem if they'd kept the support for the faithful who had invested a lot of money but they didn’t. Updates dried up and it was like they had completely dropped the thing. The M20d desk was amazing and had so much potential, I think we had one maybe 2 great updates. I was shocked to hear you we’re getting them three years in to Helix but that’s good for you folks. I sold my wireless headset last week and the only thing I have left is my JTV 69s and I'm starting to think about letting it go. Helix seems to be the prize they've been searching for and your video has shown just how good and versatile it is, but like I said I just don’t trust them any more that my 1600 investment would be followed by the next big thing and ditched like the rest of the gear. Sad really it could have been so much better.

    Hey! I've been serving on my student praise team at my church for about 6 years. I have been considering either upgrading my guitar or buying a new pedal board. I have been using budget equipment the whole time because I don't have the money to get anything on the top line. Right now I am using a Squier Strat and a Boss GT-1. I am looking for recommendations on either to buy a new guitar or invest in a pedal board. The only problem is that I am left handed so most guitars are more expensive. Thanks!

  • @seanc2550
    @seanc25504 жыл бұрын

    For the super budget conscious like myself, the HD500/500x is simply unmatched in it's price point. Less than $300 used. It is older technology and you do have to put in some effort. Everyone seems to think that because you buy a modeler you can just download patches and go. It's not that simple. All these boards require effort. Also the HD500 and Helix can also be used as an IEM interface. You couldn't give me an amp anymore. I can practice in the room right next to my kids room and they don't even know I'm playing while they're asleep. I can also play along to any song through my computer. Works amazingly with planning center.

    I need to preface this by saying that I'm the guitarist on our worship team at church but it's a really small church. I almost always play acoustic guitar just because I'm the only guitar player but I never really thought about how something like this could enhance the worship experience. I've kinda found our worship to be boring at times because I'm limited in what I can change and play on the guitar (especially since I really just have a DI). I'm trying to justify spending the money for something like this but it kinda feels like overkill. Although having the ability to have song based patches sounds really cool

    The Ericson I believe it was accomplished by just moving to a new snapshot and saving the snapshot with the amp gain or volume up a bit. Kind of like a boost. That is what I have done and it works really well. Snapshots allow all the blocks to be on or in idle mode (for lack of a better wording) so all blocks are ready to be turned on or off per setting without the glitch that changing presets will have. Line 6 really thought this pedalboard through.

    The Helix is a great, guitar effects processor, modeler and is an exceptionally good user interface. It's extremely convenient for players and soundmen alike, easy to haul and does nearly everything you need in regard to playing through a complete electric guitar rig...minus the weight and volume associated with traditional guitar amps. However, and something that's not often noted and what I've discovered after owning a L6 HD500, L6 Helix, Vox Tone Lab SE, Yamaha DG Stomp, Digitech GSP 2101 along with several others is that this type of equipment is only as good as the sound reinforcement your playing through when playing direct. If your church or event PA are sub-par or the soundman is not able to help you dial the devices full potential...your sound will be limited and much less than you're expecting to hear after watching all the product demos - very disappointing. Plus, you won't have what's referred to as...the 'in-the-room' sound being generated by a guitar amplifier either - I contend with this dilemma often when playing different venues. After owning a Helix for a month I returned it and bought an FAS AX8 and liked the amp modelling much better but...I could still feel it's digital properties in the amp sounds. To remedy this I now use my AX8 only as an effects processor/cab simulator only (along with an H9 for additional effects), for amp tones I've routed a Kingsley Constable (Marshall tones) and Kingsley Maiden (Fender/Dumble tones) tube preamp pedals into the AX8 EFX Loop...I also use a Kingsley DS Tube Boost as a pseudo tube power amp for more true-tube authenticity;) Please note...this comment is not meant to degrade the Helix but, instead provide insight on a matter that's often not considered or possibly overlooked when making this type of purchase. Eq'ing the board and the device itself properly is a huge factor as well! I believe educating yourself and working closely with a knowledgeable soundman will reward your efforts in this investment. Just wanted to share this as I've literally spent years and purchasing tons of gear trying to make a direct to board guitar sound work.

    Maybe get yourself a JTVariax to go with that Helix. Then you can change guitars mid song.

    “The tones are in there” but the line 6 presets are undesirable. Don’t judge a helix by its presets.

    1:50-2:05. Do we need to slight the guitarist still using analog gear? I see a use for the Helix, but IME most guitarists are still using it. "Don't need" yet a majority of players are still using it....

    @@wesleyfletcher7654 Yeah, I'm not dissing players for using Helix or Kemper. Certainly plenty of them around churches and elsewhere. For me it's to each his own. I shouldn't feel like the "old guy" because I'm still cranking tubes with a boost in front. I mean, look at John Mayer. He's touring with Dead and Co. with a 40 year old Dumble. I get the digital thing, I just don't see how inferring that equipment that another guy is using is "outdated" furthers the Kingdom. You can still give props to your own rig without dissing someone else's.

    yeah just some poor wording there, but i'd say for someone starting out, definitely go digital, cause nowadays it's much more reasonable. While analog undoubtedly will sound better, most people getting into it can't be bothered by the sound difference when the price and convenience factors are laid out in front of them. I'd actually love to have a tube amp and pedal board setup myself but it's hard justifying lugging all that gear when i can bring a single helix unit with me instead

    I don't think they intended any offense; it sounded like they were mentioning the benefits of a digital guitar setup. Try not to be so easily offended over a video that is has the intended purpose of teaching others specifically about a digital amp modeler. Especially since we are brothers in Christ, let's give each other the benefit of the doubt in situations like these. I'm sure Jake and Brian did not mean to ruffle any feathers with their commentary.
